You're rep doesn't matter but if you look at the combat zone it will tell you the difficulty.
Also are you running any mods?
If not the key is never core mechs until you're in missions approaching 400 tons. Until then leg them, not just for better salvage, but also because it's easier.

Well I was just using core as a way of saying kill the bastards. Its not the difficulty, its literally just more mechs than I swear when I played it a year ago. Like a defense or warzone would be be like 8 or so mechs total normally. Now the majority of the forces I'm fighting are mechs with the smaller soft targets being the rarer sort.

Hmm
It can very by mission by quite a bit. Like if you have a goal of 33 kills yeah you're likely going to be killing 15-18 enemy mechs.
But those should be mixed in with hovercraft/VTOLs/tanks and at difficulty 9 around half of those mechs should be lights or Cicadas (which might as well be lights).
Also not every defense/warzone/garrison/battlefield should have that many required kills. Like if you're doing one that has a kill count of 22 and you're facing 18 mechs something funky is going on.

Depending on what mechs you have, I've found twin-heavy rifles or loading up mechs with as many SRM6es (or 4s, if you're in a pinch) as you can cram onto it can help thin the herd.
I had a Kintaro that remained useful up through until I could find a replacement Archer (which remained useful until I got my 3 Nightstars loaded with nothing less than twin tier 4 gauss rifles).

Instead of Standard/XL/Clan XL/XXL/Light engines now there's an Engine Core which determines base weight and speed and then the XL/Clan XL/XXL/Light are modifiers that go in a different slot.
Except it converted every XL and Clan XL into a regular XL and after running through a few industrial hubs there doesn't appear to be any Clan XL modifiers.
So literally every single loadout I have is broken >_<
*edit*
Ok I managed to fix it. Apparently Steam only automatically updated some of the YAML mods and not all of them. I had to force updates but now it's working. There apparently is a Clan XL modifier item and it looks like they fully converted over
Which considering how many random low tonnage Clan XL engines I had I think I made out like a bandit
I guess I will probably be finally be playing this game soon. Are there any mods worth installing even for a first playthorugh?

Oh, sorry, I meant Battletech.

I feel like first time through should maybe just go vanilla (with the DLC if you've got it). Then go crazy with some mods. My favorite being Battletech Revised (BTR).
WRT the HBS game, I feel like a lot of problems with it's late game (IE Assault spam) would go away in a hurry if I was able to field a second lance; It'd encourage me to field a wider variety of mechs, off set the general unfairness of fighting 2.5 times your tonnage and allow you to really experiment with different tactics.
I guess I will probably be finally be playing this game soon. Are there any mods worth installing even for a first playthorugh?
As mentioned, first time I'd stick to near vanilla, particularly if you want to do the story Campaign. It's restricted to a limited area of the starmap and is obviously balanced for the base game. Once you finish that, I'd start over with a new Career game with the mods you want.
All the DLC Flashpoint story missions I'd save for a Career game as well. They can certainly be played on your Campaign game once it's complete and the full map opens up, but Campaign progression permanently increases mission difficulty on all star systems which I don't like. Career mode doesn't do that.
That said, there are some quality of life mods you might want even on a first-time playthrough.
Modtek: Battletech mod loader. Required.
cFixes: fixes a number of minor issues in the stock files.
BattletechPerformanceFix: improves general loading speed and performance of the mechlab and store once you have a lot of inventory.
Skip Intro: skips intro movie. However, watch the intro at least once before installing. It's well done and is a surprisingly concise history of the Inner Sphere.
SkipTravelCutscenes: skips the dropship animation when traveling between stars to reduce time.
ModTek - Firing Line Improvements: changes color and line types of firing lines to be more informative about your shots. Customizable.
Real Hit Chance: removes the s-curve number fudging from the UI and shows you the actual hit chance. Doesn't actually change your hit chances.
Melee Mover: allows you some additional positions around enemy mechs when performing melee.
Then you start getting into equipment/mech additions, gameplay changes, and large overhaul mods.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
Like, the people who put that together were able to perfectly encapsulate the wonder, grandeur and tragedy of nearly a thousand years in a way that makes it clear to everyone how we got to where we are without having to say one god damn word. It is perfection.
The intro to BATTLETECH gave me major Expanse vibes and I mean that in the highest praise.
I didn't know a goddamn thing about the backstory to Battletech until I saw the intro, but it told me everything I needed to know.
So good.
Kamea's narration is also damned good during the campaign.

I watch the Intro movie every time I load the game. It's the best intro cinematic for introducing a complex world in an easily accessible but entertaining way I've ever seen. It even manages to evoke a sense of nostalgia immediately.
Skipping it isn't human.

Like the thing with battletech's lore is that that shit is fucking *dense*.
Like, with a lot of settings the story might be told across like ten thousand years but there's a whole lotta 'nothing happening" for vast stretches.
By comparison in battletech there is pretty much something happening in every year between 2089 and 3160. I'm not even joking, there is just piles and pile and piles of lore.

Check the timestamp on this fucker. Tex goes to great length to explain the time period and logic that went into designing one of the most respected battlemechs in the entire history of the setting and how it went on to become such an iconic workhorse of the heavy mech weight class, even having a Clan second line assault mech built on it's philosophy.

The BATTLETECH intro is a masterclass of "show, don't tell". Not a single word is spoken, but even if you know nothing about the setting going in you'll probably come away with a decent idea of what happened. IIRC that was not the original plan either. HBS were originally going to have a more traditional intro with narration type of thing but something happened and they couldn't and this was Plan B. The old scuttlebutt is that HBS had recorded a lot of voices lines, but a lot of it was lost somehow. I don't know if that is true or not, but to me it makes a lot of sense. During the game there really isn't any rhyme or reason to what lines are voiced or not. A perfectly mundane line may be voiced in a mission but then a real dramatic story beat one might not be.
As to the rest of the lore of the setting, yeah it is fucking dense. What I love most about it is that it is not just stuff about the Great Houses or Power Players either. The warhmachines of the setting quite often have a ton of lore to them. Stuff that reads like it was lifted out of a far future Jane's Defence.
And to add icing to the cake there is also a fuckton of "canon rumors". Things that are never really explained (either in or out of universe) and that a bunch of people in-universe debate and theorize in the exact same manner people today on the internet do about shit. From academics doing legitimate research to conspiracy nuts not saying it's aliens, but aliens. Even going so far as to have stuff that the academic community says, "Yeah this is very, very, very likely what actually happened" only to have conspiracy theorists say, "Fuck that! That's just a cover story! Here's what really happened!"
I fucking love it.

I'm surprised they didn't pull a BattleTech cartoon move and claim that the book was an in-universe piece of fiction that was popular in Drac space and turned in to a pretty alright DracFlix miniseries or something.
Speaking of the BattleTech cartoon, how they handled the canonicity of it is so much fun.
The cartoon itself is ridiculous in the mid-90s kind of way. It really didn't fit the setting all that much though, outright breaking established canon. So what do the Powers That Be do? Well they claim the cartoon is an in-universe piece of fiction. One that was executive produced by Adam Steiner himself, who was the main character of the cartoon and a (in-universe) real life person. The cartoon was propaganda loosely based on the exploits of Adam Steiner's Somerset Strikers during the Clan Invasion and meant to drum up support to renew the offensive against Jade Falcon.
Now the best bit? The main antagonist of the cartoon, Star-Colonel Nicolai Malthus, was also a (in-universe) real life person. The cartoon had made its way to the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone and Clanners fucking loved it! Unfortunately for Nicolai Malthus his fellow Jade Falcons gave him shit about his ridiculous cartoon self. Nicolai's career kind of tanked during this time and he blamed the cartoon for it. By all accounts he was an unlikable asshole, even by Jade Falcon standards, so who knows how much of an effect the cartoon had. Either way it probably didn't help.
Enraged by it he basically sued Adam Steiner and travelled to Tharkad to attend the court case. Things didn't go well and he tried to batchall the Judge. He was arrested and sent to prison for a short time before being handed back to the Jade Falcons. Nicolai Malthus would later join the Watch and die fighting The Society, by all accounts he became a much better person (at least by Jade Falcon standards) by the time of his death.
Adam Steiner would eventually become Archon of the Lyran Alliance and do a pretty good job of things. He is the one responsible for re-renaming the Lyran Alliance back to the Lyran Commonwealth. His son and later granddaughter would become Archon with his granddaughter Melissa Steiner dying to Clan Wolf. Melissa's cousin Trillian Steiner-Davion now rules.

I started playing BATTLETECH a few days ago. It's fun. I did an assault the base mission which I won by the skin of my teeth (it was the first time I faced 8 'mechs, and two of mine are LRM boats, one of which ran out of ammo) and the game bugged out and wouldn't complete. Luckily I found out you can enable a debug menu by editing your registry, and the debug menu has a "complete mission" button. If I hadn't had that option I would've been really not thrilled. That mission took forever.
Currently just the laser heat reduction. They’re very hesitant on over buffing ECM mechs
Edit: the changes were also an attempt to differentiate between the variants, it’s hard when every version is “oops all energy”

Ever had one of those days?
Relatively new career, and the only new mechs I've picked up are a Vulcan and a Firestarter so far.
Simple retrieval mission. What could be easier?
Except there's two lances on the ground, and while they're lights, that means they all go first. They also have full armor. And a surprising number of them have LRM15s (thank you Javelin...). When I lost the Small Pulse Laser out of the Vulcan and he started getting further beat up I ejected and continued. Then the Firestarter lost a leg and was about to lose an arm so I punched him out. Then the Vindicator got knocked down and perilously closed to cored out as I desperately tried to finish the objective instead of just killing everything.
Finally managed to get the Blackjack out of range, did the extraction, bugged out.
Those mechs worked a little too well as a blocking force.
Jerks!

Two missions later it was my Blackjack's turn under the gun. Down to about 10 points of structure left each on the right torso, center torso, left torso, left arm.
Punched myself out and managed to recover the mission after, but I came damn near to losing my best mech (I have mech destruction on).
Sheesh.
Then a planet later I got a Titan Clash mission and managed to bag a Zeus. It's a shitty assault, but a decent enough heavy, so it's now my lead unit, where it's backed up by the Blackjack, Vindicator, and Firestarter you see above.
My lance is not the least bit lopsided, why do you ask?

Irregular lances aren't neccesarily bad as long as you know how to make each piece work as a fist.
Like, you have some decent standoff shooting with this lance in default configuration while the firestarter can be your speedy assassin flanker. There are of course much better mechs you can run with but 3025 is very much the "make it work" era.

Oh yes, everything except the Firestarter is a sniper/brawler (I go in hard for ACs when possible), with the Firestarter setup as a point blank range backstabber. It works fine, just the different initiatives is irritating. The Zeus is a fast assault, so it's actually as fast as my mediums.
The idea of the Leopard staggering through the air because it's got an assault on one side and a light on the other amuses me.

Making Sumire work for those landings
