[New Consoles]: The Xbox Xeriex X and the PS Quintuple
I grabbed Days Gone when it was free, whenever that was, to save for a rainy day
Said rainy day has arrived, and you know what? This game's alright. The story's a C- at best, but it's mechanically satisfying.
It does something that I really love in games, but that's often hard to pull off - the feeling that you're backfooted, that you're at a disadvantage, but you can claw your way back. It's got a blend of generosity and scarcity that's really satisfying, to me. Enemies hit hard, and if you get swarmed, you're FUCKED. But they make sure there's material all around - if you can keep scrambling, keep moving, they give you plenty of tools to get back in the fight.
There was this situation I got myself into. I was trying to take out a raider camp, I was being careless, I stepped in a bear trap. Things went immediately sideways. I ran out of ammo, ran out of medical supplies, I was boned. I beat a hasty retreat... and stumbled into a pack of zombies. I started running from them, but they were hot on my heels and I had no destination in mind. And then I decided to run at the raider camp. I both zigged AND zagged, I dove into cover in the center of camp. The raiders were all blasting away at my meager little shelter, I had the thinnest sliver of health, and then the zombie swarm ran in.
The zombies and the raiders lay into each other. It's a pitched battle, it ebbs and flows. The best-equipped raider starts out dominating the fight, but then his companions begin to drop off, he's getting swarmed more and more, he's finally overtaken.
By the end of it, there's one raider left. He's in rough shape, but he made it. All the zombies are gone. And then I sneak behind him, relieve him of his burdens, and loot the whole fuckin' scene for all its worth.
I was backfooted, I scrambled, I improvised, I made it. I love that shit.
Can't stress enough how lame the story is, but man. Really pleasantly surprised.
I was able to buy my PS5 today*, so I'm looking forward to trying Days Gone, I suppose. I picked up Miles Morales Ultimate Edition with it, since I wanted to play the first Spider-Man but never got a PS4

So, the latest PS5 update finally fixes an annoying issue where HDR was always on if enabled, even if the game/app didn't support it. Go to the video settings and change HDR to On When Supported and sleep soundly knowing your color space is correct
Every month GameStop gives me $5, and almost every month I use it to buy an Xbox gift card. By the time Series Xs are in stock on the MS store I’ll probably have enough to cover the cost having only actually paid for 50-60% of it.
My copy of Spider-Man Miles Ultimate Edition is still sitting in the warehouse in New Jersey because FedEx never picked it up! Looks like I'm only playing PS4 stuff and Astro

This is actually a blessing in disguise. You can probably have Astro Platinumed before Miles shows up, and it's a delightful game to boot.

I applaud your long term thinking. By abusing every possible MS rewards offer I could last year while furloughed from work for almost 3 months and buying everything that wasn't fastened down on the Xbox Store I wound up with over 500K rewards points I cashed in in January.
By the time I was able to have my dad complete an order for a Series X for me on the Microsoft store (product drops were happening while I was at work, he's working from home) I had nearly 60K more points I was able to redeem as well. I wound up getting a Series X, 2 year warranty and one of the Seagate 1TB expansion cards for a whopping $140+ shipping and I've already hit the maximum allowed value in reward point redemption for the year.

I would have loved to have done that, but it was not to be. I cashed in over $100 in Bing Rewards before the SX went on preorder, but couldn’t snag one, and didn’t have any luck in the next 90 days either, so I ended up just using that money on games during the BF/Xmas sale.
The gamepass rewards are low key pretty great, sometimes they’re the difference between me buying a digital version instead of a disc, because the extra 5 bucks off or whatever I’ve got at the time makes the digital about the same as a disc price, or close enough that I go for digital for the convenience. Pretty clever of them cos it means they get more money in the end. Also when some old game is on sale the extra money off often tempts me into a purchase
Hell yeah, Spider-Man finally showed up. Got a question for those of you who have played both Spider-Mans
Am I gonna get big spoilers or anything about the first game from Miles? Other than Miles being Spider-Man and
Doc Ock being a bad guy
of course. I wanna play Miles first but I don't want to ruin the first game.
If you're worried about spoilers for the first game, you should play the first game first.

Okie, dokie, after having both types of new hotness for a couple of weeks, I'm comfortable saying this, regardless of where your loyalties lie, both machines are wholly worth getting. For my money (or shitloads of loyalty rewards ) the Series X offers a more feature rich backwards compatibility with Xbone, 360, and OXbox games (auto HDR, Frame Boost, etc...) compared to where Sony's big plastic clam is currently at with their catalog; has a lead on initial storage space, as well as availability of storage expansions that run at the same speed as the on-board solution; and Smart Delivery is a streamlined and user friendly way of locking in next gen upgrades to those titles that offer them, as well as more robust and easy to use cross-gen save support.
On the PS5 side; the Dual Sense's haptic feedback features offer subtle enhancement to gameplay experiences and got me looking forward to where devs might start taking them as we go along; better slate of exclusive content thus far (Astro's Playroom, Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, etc..); and in my testing their storage solution currently offers an ever so slight advantage in loadtimes and app switching fluidity over MS's (albeit with constraints on both the size of the initial SSD and available expansions).
Both are beefy behemoths of TFlops and this new generation looks to be bringing the thunder. Gamers shouldn't hesitate to strap in and prepare to enjoy the ride.

“A new benefit available for a limited time on PlayStation Plus… PS Plus Video Pass is a trial service active 22.04.21 – 22.04.22. The subscription benefit is available to PS Plus users in Poland.”
It featured images of several Sony films, namely Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Bloodshot. Seems to be a set of free movies/TV for PS Plus users, which is weird considering that they stopped selling movies and TV on the PS Store a little bit ago.
This game looks sick, but I don't know if it's $70 sick
I watched the quick look of this and it looks very good. The combat looks super fun.
Will probably pick up after I get through nier.
If you’re worried about the price there’s some Risk of Rain 2 similarities in there, you could snag that as an alternative.
But much like how Hades figured out how to put a rich continuing narrative into a run based roguelike, I am super intrigued to see what a modern roguelike can do with full on AAA production values.
Edit: Guess they did put the wrong price cause it’s 749 now.
Just in case anyone happens to be in Sweden and planning to buy Returnal, Elgiganten.se is selling it for 499 SEK at the moment. Not sure if they put the wrong price or what.
Ratchet & Clank looks nice. Too bad it's still impossible to buy a PS5.
That doesn't mean you can't buy the game !
And have it sat next you on the couch while you play on your PS4 or PS4 pro...
one year i asked for MGS 5 for christmas assuming i was about to get myself an xbox one to play it on and, well, time marches ever onward and right now i have an unused copy of MGS 5 on my shelf
I finally managed to grab a PS5 in the last shipment in Australia.
It showed up on Monday last week, and as luck would have it, I was also sick for all of last week.
I've already powered through Demon's Souls (only Dark Souls 2 left in all of the Soulsbourne games for me. Not sure I'm ever going to finish it, to be honest).
Just started Miles Morales. Webslinging around New York still continues to be fun on a bun.
Anyone in Australia still wanting to grab a PS5, I would strongly recommend following Press Start Australia.
Their coverage of when shipment drops hit, have managed to net me both a Series X and a PS5 within the first 5 months of release.
Once I heard the ps5 was going to be backwards compatible I planned to just get that instead of a ps4 pro, and even started planning on getting games for it, I now have like 10 ps4 games ready to go on my shelf, still waiting on that ps5!

Getting a console is still going to be easier than say, PC parts. That's a freakish nightmare of a shitshow right now. At least people aren't using next gen consoles for crypto (that I know of, oh god why did I just invoke this)
I think if you want a new console, your best bet is lottery systems
Sony runs PlayStation Direct, which is how I got my PS5, where they put up a time to go to a website, and then everyone is randomly assigned a place in a queue to buy, if you're lucky you'll get put up to the front. You can join on multiple devices too to increase your odds, I got in on my phone but not my PC for example. I know Newegg also does a lottery system for consoles and graphics cards too.

The PlayStation Plus Video Pass is a new thing, there was a short blurb of info on the Polish site but other than that nothing yet: (Translation via https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-looks-set-to-announce-playstation-plus-video-pass/) It featured images of several Sony films, namely Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Bloodshot. As a heads up.
Oh, thanks - I'll log in later and snag it.
When I eventually get a PS5 HZD is definitely one in the first games I'll play.
I never finished it on my base PS4, but am looking forward to starting over.

they probably won't be widely available until the chip shortage gets dealt with, which probably won't happen until covid is under control

chip shortage isn't going to be solved for several years, there is not enough fab for all of the demand in the world
