I actually don't think it's quite as simple as "Sony can't put this thing on their subscription service because they lose money,"
Like at some point you're looking at potential subscription numbers vs number of people who would have purchased the game at full price, add in a sprinkling of people buying that shit pre-owned or waiting for a sale, etc etc etc
Then again, I kind of think "Competing with GamePass" is a secondary objective to "Salvage something out of Playstation Now", so at some point I don't think they feel like they need to put new games on there, they're probably right, but I'm real curious as to what they do to actually make this service compelling at all
The reason game pass type system works so well is it's a win win; they get more money out of me per month than I would have spent otherwise, and I get to try every game they make without actually buying it upfront. So no more getting burned. Woe to anyone who bought like, Days Gone day one. That's like the perfect example of a game pass game. It's ok it's not the greatest, because it's just one game and how much time you spend on it is up to you, no money lost if you decide to try something else on the service.
As is now, I don't have PSN Plus and I'm not planning to buy any games on my PS5 until Spider-Man 2. If they dropped a game pass type beat, I'd sign up tomorrow to give some games a spin. It's easy money, actually.
I think sony should fix their flagship console that crashes anytime I accidently put it into rest mode and than takes 20 minutes of berating me to boot up because i have a SSD attached and it's totally my fault it turned off improperly
how? probably paying their engineers better wages and improving their benefits
why? because it's fucking annoying as shit

They are not making their business decisions based on you. It being a win win for you doesn't matter in the slightest.
The fact that you say its "easy money" at the end speaks volumes here.
I could give a rats ass about business sense and decisions millionaires make at the expense of their customers. I want a service that appeals to me, and Sony is losing a customer by not providing me with something like it. It is quite literally their loss.
2021 sales of the PS5 were, according to various things I briefly Googled, about 1.7 times higher than the Series X
Sony's a megacorp, fuck 'em, they're amoral at BEST. But the idea that they're scrambling or losing a competition or fucking things up irrevocably a) Has no basis in data, and b) Feels very optimistic.
It'd be dope if they were being punished for not being customer friendly, but they simply aren't. They never have been. They don't care, and it's because they don't need to. If their GamePass knockoff thing gets some free ink and some subscribers, cool, but the idea that they NEED to beat GamePass has no basis in the actual state of the industry. It could be a problem for them in the next console generation, and they could be laying the groundwork for when it becomes a bigger problem, but they're doing fuckin' fine. They have been already been amply rewarded for their disdain of customers, why would they stop now?
[And the idea that they'd abandon carefully-controlled (and expensive!) marketing narratives to backchannel data to one dude to get Twitter opinions from randos, upon which they will make last-minute business decisions, continues to be an idea detached from reality]
So, we bought fancy new Xboxen. My son got one last week and I caught one online this morning. What's pretty on gamepass to try first? I was thinking Doom Eternal?

Just having flashbacks to the Xbox One reveal and the period early in the PS3 life cycle
You should absolutely expect whoever is in the "lead" to act like a massive jack off and during the periods in-between, anything they do that could be construed as consumer friendly is purely incidental

Sure they're doing well right now, but Microsoft is gaining ground back via things like game pass. The whole reason they're even doing this is to have a similar tier to Game Pass Ultimate.
I'm just healthily skeptical of their intentions and think they can do better, but it'll take losing the crown prob before they do that.
So, we bought fancy new Xboxen. My son got one last week and I caught one online this morning. What's pretty on gamepass to try first? I was thinking Doom Eternal?
If you just want the graphically prettiest thing, probably something like Forza Horizon 5 or Gears 5 or yeah, Doom.
Personally I feel that if you want to be more thoroughly impressed just load up a game you’re really familiar with, and be blown away by the faster load times.
One of the first things I loaded up on my new console was Rock Band 4, and having a song load so fast you can’t read the loading screen was prettier than any 4K fluff.
It's still too early to tell if the gamepass experiment is working. Microsoft is throwing tons of money at it still, while also offering of ways to get it for cheap. We also don't know what it'll look like in a few years when they do that. Also what happens when MS has enough studios to churn out new games every month on top of third party offerings. Will multiple indies stil find success on the platform if there are constantly day one AAA exclusives available?
What Sony is doing is consolidating their existing services like MS, and cam be primed to expand. If they later decide Day 1 exclusives are necessary, they can pull on that ripcord fairly easily.

Tetris Connected blew me away on Series X, with my brand new TV. May be the best use of HDR.
Guardians is also a really pretty game, specially when they do a close up on Rocket. Fur tech!

I ain't know shit about business but McrSft seem to be taking the Amazon approach by simply spending $$$America until eventually they own everything and you have no choice but to S U B M I T
So like, I'm sure they're gonna lose hella money overall but in late stage capitalist hellscape the points are made up and the rules don't matter so it's actually galaxy brain business plan.
I dislike that the future is rich ass corps buying other corps. It's like guren lagann but instead of robots piloting robots it just rich assholes eating one another infinitely

Given the leisurely/reasonable (depending on your point of view) timelines that MSoft seems willing to accept from their first party studios I think this is unlikely. Game Pass ideally has new games every week or two, not just every month, and indies are the easiest way for them to fill those gaps. This is again pure speculation but I wonder how much it cost them to get Tunic, for instance, on Game Pass and exclusive for a year vs what it would have cost them to develop something similar, I bet the math works out pretty well for them.
Stranger of Paradise is an absolutely bizarre game and mostly not in ways I find very fun
The absurd tone and over the top macho stuff from our heroes is actually pretty funny, but it's pretty thin on the ground while you're actually playing the game. The cutscenes are pretty bad and all other conversations are just accessed from a list in your menu between missions. If you're looking for anything besides the gameplay to keep you invested you're out of luck
And the gameplay is... a mess. My biggest complaint, articulated by Ren on Waypoint, is that it's really bad at making it clear you're taking hits. The feedback is pretty bad so unless you're looking directly at your health bar you have no sense of if you're talking damage. In fact in general it just becomes very hard to follow what's happening once the action picks up
There's 28 goddamn jobs in this game and the advanced and expert ones require you level a combination of others to unlock and I just can't imagine grinding this game long enough to see a meaningful slice of those jobs
I'm not even sure it is! It has some of the superficial trappings but it's kind of like sloppy Dark Souls cosplay. At my worst DS moments I have felt like it is deliberately telling me to go fuck myself, but Stranger of Paradise mostly seems to do so accidentally because it doesn't know how to communicate any better. It just feels way less competent
I would definitely say that "i cant tell when im being hit" is never a problem that ive had with any fromsoft game tho.

I'm really enjoying Stranger of Paradise. It's definitely janky and I get turned around on occasion, but I already have two advanced jobs just by playing normally and disagree about the damage detection.
I have a STRONG recommendation for all the Game Passers out there. The Pedestrian feels like a throwback to the golden era of XBLA games where there were super clever, perfect length puzzle platformers coming out every couple of seasons. This is a game where you play as a stick figure trying to proceed from drawing to drawing using a few simple but powerful rules. Stuff like, any door in one drawing can connect to any other drawing's door, so long as the orientation and physical placement of the drawings make sense (exit door on the right, enter the new drawing on the left, etc). The pacing and the way the conundrums escalate is impeccable, the music is cheerful and jazzy, the eureka moments quickly become addictive, and judging by the achievement pacing, it'll be about 4-6 hours max, depending on how quick on the uptake you are. I'll probably wrap it up tonight, but this one is extremely fun and it seems destined to fly completely under the radar. Don't let yourself miss it if you love stuff like Braid or other platformers that focus on thinking through a multi-step puzzle over execution.

One of the big things that is frequently overlooked when it comes to competition in a market is that it does not mean trying to do the exact same things and have the same products.
An oversimplification but an easy thing to look at is food. A pizza place and a Taco place across the street are absolutely competing for customers. But you don't expect the pizza place to start making tacos in order to keep up. They just need to make sure they keep making good and desirable pizza. And the competition still matters because if the quality slips even a person who prefers good pizza vs good tacos may start looking at getting good tacos over mediocre pizza.
And the perfect example of this absolutely applying to this industry is, as someone else brought up earlier, Nintendo.
One of the main reasons they are still so successful is that they are not trying to chase everything the others do and continue to focus on what they already do well.
