I didn't like Abby's "inappropriately overconfident, but in an intentional way" bit she would frequently do, but 13 Deadly Sims is the overall funniest thing Giant Bomb has ever produced. There's a few one shots, particular episodes or clips that are funnier, but it felt like EVERY episode of 13DS was laugh out loud funny.

It's difficult because writing credits for G4 skits have been unclear to me at times but I've definitely seen a few vids on G4 where I've had a grand laugh and later found out that Abby was at least partly responsible for the script
Like, no not all of her humour lands, but neither does everything say, Jeff, Alex, Vinny (or god forbid, Dan) did back in the day. They're differently chosen wavelengths by design so that minimum Giant Bomb isn't farming the same narrow demographic until the end of time
Well I think what you're posting is part of the conversation, and I'm trying to figure out what your point is, which is why I'm trying to distinguish between being a shithead in a GB comment and posting things in a forum thread like this one.
And I just dislike conflating being put off by something someone does, especially on a personality-driven site, with "saying mean shit". That's what and why I'm arguing.
My point is pretty well articulated above IMO.
Personality sites like GB are in a really weird place where their teams are both "staff" and "talent". The nature of their work exposes them to a lot of outside pressure and harassment (pointed or benign) and that can really fuck with a person's mental health and ego.
SO, people like you (or us, if that makes you feel better) feel perfectly ok to call out things like a person's laugh because we pay for the content and, as consumers, think it's fine to comment on our purchase or investment - and to some extent it is. That doesn't change the fact that on the other side of the equation there's a person sitting there just trying to their job like the rest of us - except they have to deal with a metric ton of online opinions telling them how they should do their job.
That part I got, what I asked you to differentiate is making those comments on their site and socials - i.e. "customers telling them what to do" - and talking about it on a forum like this, where they'd have to go out of their way to *look* for these posts, which are, in contrast to the aforementioned, not directed at them. Do you not agree that those are two very different things?
Like, I cannot listen/watch Waypoint videos and podcasts, because I don't want anything Klepek in my stuff (which is a bummer, because I like everybody else there). But I don't get on their socials or twitch chat and post "BOY I WOULD REALLY LOVE WAYPOINT IF PATRICK WASN'T THERE". Neither did I post "omg fire Dan" or some shit just because I can't stand most of his antics.
That's why I bristle at blanketing everything as "saying mean shit". The latter I've seen way too much *on their site* directed at Austin, at Patrick, at Abby. Much of it coming from a very specific capital G Gamer crowd. But if anyone being put off by something one of the staff says or does* immediately gets put into the same camp as those people, I wonder wtf is going on
*and again, I like Jess, it's just stretches and moments that stood out to me in the SH content that, well, read above.
I would hazard to guess that people saying shitty things about you online feels shitty regardless of whether they are directed at you or said on a message board. It may seem different to you but I'm sure it feels no different to them - which is who this is about.
Now, of course, people here are free to say and discuss whatever they want about these people and topics. That in no way would change how the person being talked about would feel.
To go back to my original point. These people aren't celebrities. They are people out there doing jobs just like us, getting paid just like us but, unlike us, are subject to a lot of feedback people like us shouldn't be subject to.
I think Abby's admiration of Ellen; while we were well past the point that it was obvious that Ellen was just a shitty rich person, soured me on any comedic bit she could have produced.

I don't mind that she admired Ellen, it's the way she dismissed people who leveled the legit criticisms against Ellen that I did not like, especially in contrast to her being very vocal about accountability of celebs etc.
There was that time she tweeted about how incredibly disappointed she was in St Vincent for being a vocal supporter/defender of Ricky Gervais, and that she wished she had known about it before she bought a bunch of St Vincent related wall art.
Didn't really dull her love for St Vincent, though.
I feel like between her onscreen persona, her celebrity and her status as a very prominant gay person made it hard to parse how much of the "Ellen is completely terrible" story was accurate, and how much was sour grapes.
I worked at a TV station for 4 years and Ellen was on during my shift, so I watched a LOT of Ellen and she did a very good job of not being an a monster while on screen and instead coming across as a warm and welcoming person. So when you heard the stories, it was easy to go "Shame it sounds like she's tough to work for" or "I'm sure it's not THAT bad." instead of "Oh, this person should not be in any position of authority over anyone."

So Nextlander covered that Capcom thing today, but Vinny and Alex did the stream IN PERSON (Alex went to Vinny's house) so if that's something you're missing, they've got you covered. Jeff did his own coverage of the stream while GB and WP didn't cover it at all.
SteevLWhat can I do for you?Registered Userregular
Jeff's second episode of his podcast is 3 hours and 13 minutes. I'm not sure if listening to his podcast, the Bombcast, and Nextlander in one week is sustainable for me, even if I cut out the Dumptruck. Guess I'll see how it goes for the next week or two. I hate falling behind on podcasts.
Should Arcade Pit at Giant Bomb ever want to keep this kind of theme and venture out into the world of comedy they could have on members of The Birthday Boys, The Sloppy Boys, or both cohosts of The Doughboys.

Seriously though, I enjoy that Six Crazy Frights intro every single time.
Like, she seems very nice, and godspeed for her career in TV writing for G4, but yeesh. Some of that stuff is DIRE.

She had very strong theater kid energy, which worked sometimes and fell flat other times.

Omg lol
I think the only one he said he won't do is Devolver because it's comedic in nature and he doesn't want to riff on someone else riffing.

Jess dropping an “I heff five metchsteek” seven minutes in further confirms my suspicions that she is good people.
