As things stand, I'll drop GB for Nextlander. Vinny has long been the heart of things for me.
And I agree that it seems a little weird that they're doing the same thing, just without the corp. At the very least, it makes the positive talk about RV and how awesome it is to have JeffB on to basically take care of the suits a little hollow. I really hope that there was no beef with JeffG. Sure, he hasn't tweeted about Nextlander, but neither have Jan, Jason or Rorie. That's probably a business thing, don't want to read too much into it.
I did have a chuckle though when I saw that Abby did not tweet anything about Nextlander. Competition's rough huh
I do remember seeing both Jan and JeffB replying to the announcement with positive responses, which for me would imply lack of bad blood.

As far as competition between the groups, they are selling personality. Abby and the guys are all on twitch now sure, but based on Abby’s streams and what I expect from the nextlander crew i bet they are going to be very different. Thats why i loved abby on GB, she was a breath of fresh air. Same with Waypoint. All are touching on video games but in different ways. Its not a zero sum game.
Subscribed! I only recently started listening to old GB stuff, and Vinny is the main draw for me. Mayve some collabs between them and Waypoint+ in the future?
The name is a bit odd, but I wonder if they llan to broaden their scope outside videogames sometimes. Seems generic enough to cover tabletop, movies, etc.
Nextlander is an extremely versatile title scoring high in the "dumb", "meaningless" and "vaguely irritating yet intriguing" categories

In the podcast they say the name was the hardest part. It took them multiple days of searching for a name they could register across services. I imagine that has to be like zero fun.
Olivawgood name, isn't it?the foot of mt fujiRegistered Userregular
Yeah hard mode for a small business social media presence these days is trying to think of a name that isn't already taken on every major social media site
I think Nextlander is damn near meaningless especially for what they're doing but hey, it's what they could get
And let's be real "Giant Bomb" doesn't exactly communicate video games either. Though it does have more of a weird punk feeling to it than Nextlander, which feels like a made-up Rival Video Games Site owned by a corporation

But those two statements cancel each other out, so *shrug*

Watched the Nextlander stream and man does it feel weird. There's an ad-hoc quality to it (which is weird that stood out because most GB content has that feel to it) and I'm not sure I'll ever get used to them actually paying attention to the twitch chat and talking about Twitch subs and whatnot.
All that said, the weirdest thing is how little has changed. They're still talking about embargos and E3 like nothing ever happened. This isn't a little amateur thing they're doing in their spare time, this is the real thing, and it just makes things even weirder.
They might have a few embargoes carrying over from their time as GB employees but if they continue to care about them long term then it's just confusing to me. As an indie streaming collective, do they plan on continuing to having working relations with gaming companies behind the scenes such that embargoes would still be placed on them?

They explicitly mention having to factor in embargos for their "Podcast every Thursday" schedule.

Depends, does their audience expect the type of content from them that requires them to cultivate and maintain those kinds of business relationships?
this is not the mooooooooooost exciting set of people to announce
i was sort of hoping to hear about them hiring or, i guess "working with" new people?
and they're saying that this is just the start and they're gonna be shifting different stuff in and out, but this initial lineup is a little underwhelming

for me it evokes pulp sci-fi stories that I could see the guys being into

Also the first thing they could find that they could grab all the usual hangouts. Which is a big deal with something like this.

It sounds like a C tier avengers villain is what it sounds like.
FUCK yes that is what the name reminds me of

(My gut says, yeah, they probably do.)
Isn't live Bombcast always premium?
it wasn't for a few months during the pandemic because they just chucked everything on twitch.
they put it back behind the paywall relatively recently
According to my calculations... that's about one and a half tricaster 2 elites a month.
Also, too many Jeffs

The concept is interesting though, curious where that all goes
Yeah and with Nextlander, they can be part of GB family without all the production and management stress. Pretty damn smart move
