I wonder if Drew will come back, what with Cloth Map being done and his producing skills
He is at....gah some company, I forget. Probably depends if his contract allows him to do seasonal stuff at GB. Or did you mean full time? Idk about that, they have 2 video guys already

One thing with the guys too is that they can now guarantee working from home. Im sure that was weighing on the GBeast team especially. Its a lot easier to make living situation plans when you know where your work is. I imagine Vinny might make his basement a bit more studio like.

It feels weird, in an industry that is quickly coming to terms with worker rights and benefits, that Giant Bomb is pivoting to a "we're going to hire and build our brand around a bunch of contractors".
I don't know. I do not love this approach but I hope it ends up being something good.

It reminds me a lot of the movie industry where a whole lot of everything is basically contract basis
Jeff and Danny keep hinting at Giant Bomb brining in at least one wrestler to do content and I almost have to imagine that's Kenny Omega.
I was thinking Xavier Woods really.
I’m down with this new pitch of giant bomb as like the tv station of video games but a show with Jeff Grubb who I only really know as someone who breaks news on Twitter and having Dan doing a show that aren’t a strong start.
Jeff also essentially just stated that Premium is sticking around but he doesn't know how it works in this scenario with the new direction which was.....a weird thing to say when you have a bunch of people with their finger hovering over the 'cancel' button.
Jeff Grubb is a journalist with VentureBeat, he's well-known for breaking stories on unannounced games and events, he's one of the big sources people follow for leaks/announcements

Right I forgot about the gamespot crossover, that I’m pretty excited for because the current crew over there seems cool but I’m bad about ever checking out their content.

It also reminds me of the game of the year coverage, when they pull in all these insane lists and celebs and views of the industry. Or the E3 after show, when they pull in all these insane guests and celebs and views of the industry.
So I’m getting a lot of weird info here, could someone summarize what’s going on for the GB announcement today?
-Danny O'Dwyer is joining the site on a semi-permanent basis. He's not leaving Noclip but he's gonna be a big part of the site's content going forward
-They are probably going to be hiring one more permanent person in an editorial role
-beyond that, instead of hiring up to replace all the folks they've lost, they're going to start contracting people to do short-term shows and features, with an emphasis on doing lots of different, varied content for the site.
-Starting out, they're going to be doing shows with Dan Ryckert, Jeff Grub, and some folks from Gamespot
-long term they're talking about trying to get a wide variety of folks involved, and even floated the idea of taking pitches from the community
So I’m getting a lot of weird info here, could someone summarize what’s going on for the GB announcement today?
Basically they are going to be contracting some people for specific shows and things but also eventually bringing some more core staff onboard.
-Jeff Grubb for some content
-Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James from Gamespot for a show with Bakalar
-Dan Ryckert for a show with Bakalar
-Danny ODwyer will be up for more Core content like Bombcast and things like that and also pitching shows
-more announcements coming as contracts are finalized (hints of a wrestler being one)

No, I'd prefer for him to have a pov on how this all intersects with the new direction of the site.
Unless they are pausing charging people until those announcements are made. And, yes, I know they've extended premium for people over the next couple of months.

I don't love that they're not intending to hire up
I'd rather they'd have found ways to make more Abby's and Austin's rather than capitalizing on existing talent, honestly
It makes sense from a business perspective because it also probably costs less in benefits and salary and such to do small contracts and simply provide production, but...

i'm hoping that as it really spins up they start expanding their reach and platforming more people
they're in a difficult spot so i get them running more toward established folks that can help handle what's probably gonna be kind of a rough period here but yeah, so far i'm not really feeling much excitement about this

Yeah, like, I can see the business case here - reduced overhead, only requiring the one studio (if any at all because people can record their bits remotely in their own studios they use for their main jobs), getting people who have other employment and so their contract just has to be temporary, you can hang out with your friends who are built up and want to share audiences and grow their exposure out
But I was hoping also to see big changes in terms of bringing in more diverse voices as permanent staff with like....stability, and helping them launch careers with dedicated support
And that's something they may be able to do longer term but I don't know how far out they'll be reaching from their established circles for this

Like, GB East is gone and ain't coming back. There's no studio, there's no manager and there's no employees. They'd have to rebuild it entirely from scratch, and finding a manager that Jeff would trust enough to do that is a very, very tall order.
Danny is basically replacing Ben and the new hire they mentioned would be replacing Brad. With Bakalar and Rorie, that's a pool of 7 people for the Bombcast, Quicklooks, UPF and whatever other "core" programs they'll produce, on top of the contracted stuff.

I don't know if media content like this in 2021 is actually capable of providing really solid stability
I'm reminded a lot of what Vinny was saying on the Will/Brad Tech Pod that now he doesn't have to worry about going on friend's podcasts for fear of cannibalizing their own site. Namely in that this proposal seems to short-circuit that issue by making it collaborative instead of competitive.

I may let my premium sub lapse until they clearly state what the benefits, outside of the ad free podcast and Casual Friday Streams, are going to be. The only premium video content I've watched with any consistency in the past few years have been whatever the Friday afternoon stream is. Even then I'm often looking at my phone or doing stuff on the computer while it's playing because whatever game they're playing isn't interested to me.
Like many people I've kept my sub going as a show of support more than access to video content. I may still do that going forward but I think I'll wait a month or two to see the kind of content and direction of the site goes before I spend the money.
i feel like i should have been more aggressive downloading gb premium content i wanted to keep, because as is i don't see why on earth i'd want to keep it going forward with this proposal. when even they say they don't know what premium even is right now, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

I mean, they've had Samoa Joe on some of the E3 After Dark streams before, he'd be a fun pick-up.
