I see subscriptions as me giving support to people I like to keep on doing whatever. I don’t really care if that like, gives me something.
Like Waypoint’s subscription is not a ton of content, it’s just there to make sure they can actually make the content they want.
This is why I have a Club PA membership. I don't engage with the comic very often, have never been to a PAX, and don't watch their actual plays or sessions of anything.
Yet I didn't feel $1/mo properly compensated for how valuable this forum is to me, so I back at the highest level I can.

Waypoint's subscription is also useful as a way of getting Vice to notice the value of Waypoint.

Last month I gave $5 to Lasertime's Patreon to see if they had indeed caught up with 30/20/10 Games, what used to be part of the core show before everybody left aside from two wine moms who don't like videogames, anime or comic books...
...they had not, as advertised, caught up to May. In fact the only premium podcast they released all month was a spoilercast for Resident Evil 8 which I have not played. So while I generally think of these subs as a way to support the shows I watch and listen to for free there is a limit to that sentiment.
Something I was thinking about was Jeff talking about how "now we have time to listen to pitches for new content" but Dan, Abby, Alex, and Vinnie talked all the time about pitching and ideating on new shows. I'd argue too that the East coast executed on a lot of that stuff. So, like, what is he talking about?
I would so much have rather had them hire 2 or 3 brand new folks along the lines of Abby and Jan than bring back old GB folks. I know their pitch is that people can move in and out and do short duration shows but I sure hope the last hire is someone we’ve never heard of.

they're talking about ptiching to Giant Bomb about week to week stuff and Jeff is talking about pitching to the corporate ownership about long-term plans

he was saying that now the management people above them will listen to their pitches, with the heavy implication that CBS basically blew them off anytime they tried to pitch something
presumably for projects bigger than "here's how we should brand our wednesday afternoon streams for the next four months"

Didn't he say "Now WE have time to listen to the pitches" - speaking about themselves? I'll have to go back and check but what you're saying makes sense.

i might be thinking of a different moment than you
the bit i'm thinking of was like, "Now we--well, mm, I don't need to throw someone under the bus. Now there's someone who will listen to our pitches! Let's just say that."

They can bring back the "Friends of GB" a lot faster than trying to find new people right away. I imagine this lets them ramp up premium content again quicker while they scout out other folks that are outside the immediate orbit of GB.
I do also hope though that as they branch out they do bring in a lot of voices not necessarily known to the GB community and broaden the discussions around games.

I just actually listened to the podcast on the way in to work today and Jeff definitely says "now people will listen to the pitches," which for me keeps with the theme of CBSi being a terrible fit for them from a support and probably a work culture perspective.
I hear what people are saying about wanting them to hire new untested people as full time staffers and I don't disagree exactly but as someone who's been a fan since the site started my comfort zone is the old guard and the people who're in Giant Bomb's orbit (regulars on the E3 couch, League of Heels participants, etc) and I really love the idea that they can pull all of those people in for short term weird off the cuff projects. Jeff did say that they know they need to hire at least one new person for in front of the camera work and a person or two for production help and I do think there's an opportunity for them to hire some new people and get some new blood involved.

Yea they have to hire some new unknown talent. As much as I like Brad, Vinny and Alex doing Nextlander, it's another middle aged white guy podcast, and unless they do a rotating chair like the old Beastcast then I'm pretty sure I know exactly what I'm getting content wise, which is fine some times, I like comfort food media, but I want to be challenged too, and I'd like them to be challenged as well.
Yeah it was a real crashing down to earth moment listening to the Nextlander planning podcast and hearing them stumble through discussing beloved games none of them know anything about, like Guilty Gear
It’s like, oh right, this is what this is gonna be
Hello universe! First just want to recognize an incredible milestone. We've hit 10,000 patrons! It's an incredible number, and certainly not one we expected to hit so quickly. We're saying this a lot lately, but thank you all for coming out and supporting us. It means the world.
I dunno, I think I'm ok not knowing Brad's opinion on Guilty Gear.
The GB person I'd probably be most interested in hearing talk about it is Ben and that almost certainly isn't happening.
I think the idea is not that they want to hear Brad's opinion on GG but that they recognize that by spending their time on Nextlander over other outlets they will never hear about games outside the genres that Alex/Vinny/Brad can be expected to talk about.

just assuming thats all the $5 tier (which it isn't I'm sure), that's already over 500k/year after Patreon takes it cut.
Even figuring in health insurance and associated business management costs that isn't too bad split 3 ways.

Bout got damn time
I'm sure somewhere someone in a suit is going "but how could another name have more marketable credibility in enthusiast journalism than Vice???"
