That was part of why my wife and I put it on. We saw it on HBOMax and were like, "Wait, what WAS Everwood?" We kinda thought it was like a Dawson's Creek thing, but it is so bugfuck and untethered from reality that it's like they STARTED from "That One Tree Hill episode where a dog eats a heart"

Classic Dan, always getting his heart eaten so his character would be killed off so he could direct Atlas Shrugged Part One.

They play siblings, technically, but Chris Pratt's character is written and performed more like a jealous boyfriend

I watched Everwood as it aired, I remember the initial premise as wife dies and wanted to move to Everwood so to honor her the dad uproot his whole family to Everwood.

Instead of big city surgery he is just a small town doctor now, but the town already has one! Wackiness ensues and rivalries are formed.

Also Ellie from Chuck gets knocked up.

EDIT: Since its on HBOMax, i think i will rewatched it, since that show was an early non-fantastical show i watched on the regular. Knowing that i am a very different person that i was way back then, im curious how it holds up to me.

So this is a dick move, but also, is that even how medical licenses work? In australia you get streamed into specialist tracks pretty early, and while you could probably go from surgeon to practitioner without too many hurdles I'm also fairly sure there's 3-4 years of vocational training that you absolutely have to do before you can open your own surgery.

edit: yes I am fixating on a small detail from a show I haven't watched which by all accounts is completely untethered from any semblance of reality, shut up it's Friday

The thing about Everwood that I'm irrationally fixated on is that the Surgeon Dad sees his late wife's ghost and like has conversations with her and shit, and the Surgeon Dad's Son has these fantasy daydreams where 16-year-old Sharon Carter is aggressively sexual and sexually aggressive

So there are two different, unrelated devices that break the reality of the show, two vectors of unreliable narration, with no stylistic or thematic overlap (and also one of them is skeevy as hell). It's sloppy, and again, really fucking weird.

I knew a surgeon who switched to general practice after he botched so many surgeries so badly that he could no longer find a new position as a surgeon, after already moving from state to state multiple times to try to stay ahead of his bad rep. I don't think there were any hoops he had to jump through to do so - it would have been better if there were.

Okay I was extremely gaslighting myself as to whether I'd watched episode 3 or 4 of Rutherford Falls and have confirmed Showtime and/or Rogers fucked up and uploaded episode 4 as both episodes 3 and 4 to their cable box streaming deal

With pandemic brain I was having an intensely difficult time sorting out if I had just mentally deleted watching 3, but I guess I'm gonna have to double back for that one whenever they fix the problem

    Also John Slattery!

I watched Ed dutifully for several seasons despite only intermittently liking it, because a buddy of mine got a job on the show fresh out of college.

Based on his telling, Tom Cavanagh is a wildly intense little weirdo, and he and Julie Bowen loathed each other.

Ed was a show about a dude who went back to his hometown after becoming a hotshot lawyer who falls in love with a teacher who is engaged to John Slattery IIRC, and he slowly regains his scruples defending the small town as their lawyer.

He also owns a bowling alley, and his office is in the back.

The only joke I remember about the show was an episode where the alley kept getting vandalized, so Ed and Michael Ian Black stake the place out, can't find the vandals, assume they've scared them off, and there's a slow pan to reveal the vandals have changed the giant neon sign to read Stucky Bowel instead of Stuckey Bowl.

Oh and one episode had Danny DeVito doing mail fraud.

I didn't watch much of Ed, probably just the first season, but I do remember spending the whole time wishing he'd wise up or at least get obsessed with somebody else.

My brain hasn't retained much of Everwood, but one of the stupid things I recall
is that the son hates his dad for uprooting their life after his wife died and assumes he's going through a crisis, but it's like an end of season moment that the dad finally tells him that he's honouring his wife because she loves this town.

Greg Berlanti: Master of Stupid Secrets

Also that JD in Scrubs specifically dunked on the show and my reaction at the time was "Come off it, that show is right up your alley"
