I need Dana Gould as Dr Zaius to appear on an episode. That two minute video of him singing William Shatner to congratulate them was too much a tease to not have more of that in my life

also just, lol at all the handwaving for shitty people like ricky gervais, louis ck, bill cosby, etc

even if you wanna separate the art from the artist, just going "is it hypocritical that X was a sex pest while lecturing us on empathy? maybe, but i liked this show" is a bad look to me

edit: to clarify, i don't know if gervais is a sex pest. he just gets a similar "yes, things he's done after the show have made it hard to stomach watching him now, but" excuse in the office uk paragraph

I don't know of any sex pest allegations, but he's been publicly transphobic and Gervais-level annoying about it, so he can fuck all the way off anyway.

A while back before I had soured on him completely, I watched one of his more recent comedy specials and my God does he love going for the easiest jokes possible. He also had a fucking bizarre extended bit about how myalgic encephalitis/chronic fatigue syndrome isn't a real disease, which was just ???

There was an incredible moment right at the end of the set though, where he's already 'finished' and then just as he runs back out for an encore the camera cuts to face the audience and half the fucking place is already walking out. I can only think it was one of his editors selling him out, because while he's always been happy to play pathetic characters I've never seen him dunk on his real self that hard on purpose.

I'm halfway through Shadow & Bone now and it definitely picks up after the first couple of episodes, which are by no means uneventful but mostly have the two leads being bounced around like pinballs with not a lot of agency.

The show as a whole is a kind of 50/50 blend of tired tropes and original, interesting ideas. But it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not and there is a genuine sense of fun to the writing that's steadily winning me over.

Though there was one egregiously dumb character moment in episode 4:
Alina mentally writing off Mal because she hasn't received any letters from him and thinks that maybe he's not into her that way. Like FFS lady, there are a hundred legit reasons for why he might not be writing you back or even receiving your letters, and plus even if he's not into you he's still your closest childhood friend and you inarguably have a super strong bond with him.

Also started Jupiter's Legacy yesterday and that's pretty good so far, once you get past the distracting 'old person' make-up.

I'm watching The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and just finished episode 3. The show's been... okay so far, but this episode in particular felt seriously underwritten. Like the script needed at least one more pass before the final draft. It felt like they had the set pieces and bigger beats worked out but all the connective tissue wasn't thought through at all. They would just throw out these one-line explanations for where the action was shifting now that would either make me want more details or just confuse me. And the big set pieces were also pastiches or tropes that I'd seen done much better elsewhere.

Falcon et. all is a resounding example of "Why?" It's not interesting or different enough to draw anyone into the MCU that wasn't already there.

Wandavision on the other hand was delightfully weird and got a lot more attention.

That's what these stupid streaming shows should be. Weird and risky.

Latest Mare of Easttown was... Weird. Had several sequences that felt ported in from different shows (Three's Company slapstick, direct-to-DVD knockoffs of Silence of the Lambs), had a cliffhanger that leaves me real nervous about what tone this show is going for.

Kate Winslet is still great, and there continues to be this interesting economy of information - if feels like all the information about the case is in the world, but who knows what, when they know it, how they know it? That's where the mystery lies. It's really compelling, when they're focusing on it.

But as soon as the show tries to step past beyond those strengths, it seems to falter. And not even just thematically, but like technically. The stuff with Siobahn's love life feels like it was written by 40-year-olds, lacks all the spark and specificity that makes the show sing elsewhere. The trip to the farmhouse was actively ugly to look at, incompetently shot and cut and completely abandoning the show's grounded energy for its duration.

I'm still enjoying the show overall, still gonna stick with it, but this episode was kind of a mess.

Wife and I are watching this week's SNL. Elon aside, it's not the best episode. Though Elon isn't funny at all and every single joke is a joke about Tesla and Space X. There was even a sketch where he showed up to say "Hello I'm Elon Musk, I run the Mars program and am very important" and that was it.

    Everwood update

The COLD OPEN in episode three, the thing they LAUNCH THE EPISODE WITH, is Surgeon Dad being an absolute dickhead to a waitress at a diner. Mocks how shitty and greasy this diner is, implies it's her fault (???), just really choads it up. And then the waitress, who had been standing behind a counter, comes out from behind it... And we realize she's pregnant. So JUST NOW, the Surgeon Dad is a dick for being a dick to a server.

Other diner patrons also apparently realize, for seemingly the first time, that she's pregnant? Not totally sure what they missed prior to today. But they start tipping extravagantly on small bills, being all small-town-wholesome to channel money to this server. This annoys the server. She stands on a chair to tell the whole room that she's not a soon-to-be-new-mom, she's "only" a surrogate, she doesn't need their charity.

The Local Family Doctor, who has thus far never actually done anything wrong and just been kind of haughty, stands up to address the diner about how surrogate pregnancies are inherently immoral. (Which... ?!?!?!?!) Patrons applaud. Surgeon Dad then gets up, gives his OWN speech to an... audience of breakfast eaters? About how surrogacy is fine, and how it's Bad, Actually to say it isn't, and isn't this just more proof that I was right to come in and destroy this motherfucker? (who, again, has never really done anything to anybody until just now when he expressed a weird strawman opinion that nobody actually believes) And then the diner patrons clap even more for him.

If anything else happens in the episode I don't know, because I was so stunned and baffled by, "What if we made the climax of an especially bizarre 7th Heaven episode into the COLD OPEN for a teen soap?" is such a batshit move that I could not handle watching any more of the episode in that particular sitting

What possible reasons could you have for thinking that surrogate pregnancies are immoral??

He went with something about how it's "subverting nature's will," which is an obvious compromise on "subverting god's will," which would have at least GESTURED towards making sense for a character (while still fundamentally misunderstanding what Evangelicals actually think about birth)

But because of the compromise, he just seems like an absolutely unhinged loon who gets applauded by breakfast-eaters for no discernible reason

    Weird show. Weird show!

Surrogacy is done with IVF, pro-lifers hate it. Even if the surrogate is the biological mother and a turkey baster you can still do the sanctity of sex and marriage or whatever.

Rutherford Falls was good! I really liked it. I appreciate that they generally allowed the joke to land that Nathan was appalled by not being given an enormous amount of unearned respect, but never made him so detestable that you couldn't understand why people would hang out with him.

They did a great job with everyone! They manage to give everyone a lot of chances to be capable, funny, and the butt of a joke. And without having a ton of quippy stuff that sounds the same for every character.

Take a moment to donate what you can to Critical Resistance and Black Lives Matter.

DJ Eebs I just finished season 3 again and you were right when you said the thing about A Man Apart and Tricia Tanaka is Dead and the other one I’m too lazy to go back and look

But also for me personally Greatest Hits is a top 5 episode even if it gives away a trick about how the writers tended to think about certain episodes
when a character gets a big flashback episode from season 2 onward and they haven’t had one in a while there’s a pretty good chance they die in that episode
