I beat lady butterfly in one try by locking on, closing my eyes, and hitting dodge+attack in a steady rhythm. Totally broke a fight that I did not have and never will develop the skill to beat the normal way

Not yet then. You will absolutely know who he is once he shows up. He's got a big impact.

One other important thing about Lady Butterfly: that entire branch of content is technically optional, at least compared to the "main plot". What I mean is that there's a whole string of bosses you can go fight instead (obtained Prayer Beads to extend your health and Memories to increase your attack power) before fighting her becomes truly necessary to proceed in the story, and she's balanced like it. Sekiro may not have experience levels and equipment, but it does have a solid amount of metroidvania-style progression, so just the fact that you've found a particular boss doesn't mean you're actually expected to face them at that instant.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

yeah see I fought her before Gyoubu

it was maybe a mistake but I didn't really consider putting the game down at any point. doubt I'd tell anyone else to commit to beating her that early though.

So one thing to mention re: Sekiro is that it's the hardest FromSoft game, in my opinion, partially due to tight tuning and partially because there is exactly one way to play that game correctly and succeed.

Part of what makes the Dark Souls games feel less brutal is that you can build a character to suit a style that works for you personally, which is not at all the case in Sekiro.

Yea. I did her immediately and while it took like 2 hours, I was pleased when I got it down.

Butterfly is a boss you can beat with just pure aggression - push her into a corner and never stop attacking except to parry her counter attacks. The rhythm of swings is very consistent on that fight - none of the odd rhythms that Genichiro does.

It’s when you dodge or let up that she jumps away and does the truly dangerous stuff.

It took me a LOT of tries to figure that out.

Butterfly you just attack until it tings, then you dodge-slash her generally while dodging to the right

This completely breaks her and trivializes the fight

It's way harder to do the fight as the developer intended, but with that strategy I beat her before any of the other bosses

EDIT: Like I legitimately spend 2-3x the time fighting the stupid miniboss before her than I did fighting Lady Butterfly proper.

Most of the fights in sekiro get easier when you start getting more aggressive

    It's punchout in that regard

For the majority of the bosses I felt the best strategy was to apply pressure and to counter their attacks, and focus primarily on the counters.

Butterfly was the only time I felt like just going full ham was the best strategy.

Man, y'all talking about Sekiro is making me not want to continue playing. I bought it about a week ago and only put a couple hours in, but I'm complete dogshit at it and not improving any.

For what it's worth I struggled super duper hard on the game for a while. I think it took 2 hours or so for me to beat Genichiro.

And then I did a new game + and one shot Genichiro when I got to him.

The game really trains you on how to play, and it gets way way easier once you come to terms with its systems.

Yeah but if I'm not immediately good at something my desire to do it disappears almost completely.

Now I just think, "I just bought that game, I should really put some time into it!" but then I just feel a sense of dread and instead do anything but play that game. I should have known better than to buy it, I did the same thing with Dark Souls 1 & 2.

I absolutely loved the Genichiro fight. It felt like the game was asking “ok you’ve made it this far. Show me how you got here.” and I had a real sense of accomplishment as I figured out his timings and tells.

I am feeling the same way about Dark Souls. I want to play it because people love it so much, it must be good and I want to be part of the cool club. But god damn if it doesn't make me just feel like a moronic clutz who has never played a videogame before.

Going into the Genichiro fight and just going from getting bodied in the first phase to being able to get to the final phase without taking any hits was wildly satisfying

Genichiro is the come to Jesus moment of the game.

It was EXTREMELY difficult for me the first time around but I loved every second of it.

I forgot that DS 3 has a replica of Guts’ sword from Berzerk. I dropped the zweihander into the mud and haven’t looked back, it is so stupidly huge, no one can do anything about it once I get into my animations.

It is seriously asking you to kind of re-learn how to engage with a third person action game. It really is fine if it doesn’t click or feels bad and it doesn’t mean you’re bad at games. I do honestly think that it can be really rewarding to learn that vocabulary because it’s honestly helpful in engaging with other games like dark souls. But it’s not some ur-text where it’s required or bad to just not like it.

I do think that the moment to moment “what the fuck is this shit” creature design and running into the unexpected is kind of second to none.

Like in Farron Keep you’re like yeah yeah slugs and some sort of cannibal villagers I got it. And then you see this THING just casually walking between the trees, that you mistook FOR a tree a)because it is holding a tree as a weapon and b) because well mostly the fact that it’s holding a tree staff that is now shooting cackling red SKULLS at your FACE shit shit shit gotta go bye mister

First time I played it I got pissed off in undead burg and put it aside for six months.

When I came back something clicked and I had much more fun.

This doesn’t happen for everyone obviously and it’s super ok for a series to not be for you. I do think that changing your approach and playing it co-op could help if you know anyone around here in your time zone that would be down.

"walk away from a game for a few months come back and it clicks" happens a lot with games for me. I bet there's some kind of brain learning thing going on in the meantime while you take a break from beating your head against a wall. The game that stands out for me is Myst. I couldn't get past the most basic puzzles. Came back a few months later and flew through the game.

you're probably either confusing it with something else, or there was a short lived demo at some point, like at one of the steam demo events, that your mind made into a release through the passage of time and the fallibility of memory, like fingerprints on a frozen handrail
