once I've got some work stuff done, I'm gonna start doing a thing on Twitter where I play through Disco Elysium a little bit every day, and use Twitter polls to decide which actions I take. If that sounds like fun, you should follow @JamrockShuffler to play along! Gonna link the first tweet i made on the account just to make it easier to get to:

so far twitter has decided to give me 1 Intellect, 6 Psyche, 4 Physique, and 1 Motorics

at least the stats they decided to juice are the ones that dictate your hp...

So long as there's enough Pysique for My Main Main Half Light to kick in.

Well not really I guess, with the player character of Disco Elysium the way he is.

One of the few things that the Marvel Avengers game did right was that their version of battle passes never expired.

Once you bought a hero card you can take however long you want to finish it plus by the end you get back more premium currency in rewards than it costs to buy one.

Games need to stop time limiting content in their games. The reason I stopped playing Fall Guys was because once I realized I wasn't going to max out the season exp and wasn't going to be able to finish earning the rest of the costumes I just lost interest.

Yeah, falling off the treadmill of Destiny 2 recently made it clear to me how paying for a pass and then being offered the chance to buy the rewards from the thing... that you already paid cash money for is a total scam.

I had a similar thing when I grounded out an entire season for Gears 5 and then realized I was just going to have to start over again after a month or two and decided I was done with the game.

Thinking about this, the fix that would make me happy is that the pass stuff NEVER goes away. If you're playing on a later season than the one the pass was for, you get a massive speed boost to finishing and anything that was only relevant to that one season just dumps generic resources instead. I like unlocking stuff by playing during the season, I'm just increasingly unwilling to let them bully me into a certain minimum amount of playtime if I'd rather do something else.

Hades: after a...number of further runs, the game just completely recontextualized itself again in a way that still totally makes sense for a run-based roguelite and makes everything even better.

The devs at Supergiant are mad geniuses, and they must be stopped.

    I finished Disco Elysium
When the game warned me about a point of no return I barrelled on ahead and things didn't go great.
Ruby killed herself and the tribunal happened and more people got killed. Kim got shot, though I'm told he at least survived and is just in the hospital.

The phasmid showed up on the island, but ran away when I failed a 97% check to approach it.

I think I'm gonna reload my save from before finding Ruby and see if things can go slightly better if I actually find a way to get to the island before shit happens.

Also, any time I'm asked to choose one god and betray the other, I always choose against Dionysus. Not because I don't like him, but because his "Aw, weak, I can't believe you would do me dirty like that my man" responses are always the best.

it might be the most "wow this is neat and obviously took a lot of effort and god I hate how it looks" one of these I've seen so far

it's not a new observation but i kind of love this shit just because it looks like a 90s magazine ad

they finally made good on those old renders

Render96 absolutely rules, it's a whole project to make the models and textures and such look like the old promo art and prerelease stuff, trying to find the original texture images and asset packs that were used to match them up and upscale them, it's great
The mod got a big update back in March, they've added both old stuff, like unused enemies, and new stuff, like importing the playable characters from SM64 DS (Wario rules, he kinda has his WarioWorld moveset)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbHHR0XSCas

Some folks have been using their models/textures to make new classic-style renders too

(I think my favorite bit is a special power-up in Wet Dry World from a certain commercial, you can see it in this video at 27:05)

I don't mind Apex style battle pass system, where you get guaranteed cosmetics every few levels and a few rolls for some extra stuff. $10 every 3 months for a game that's f2p is fine.

It's lootboxes themselves that bug me way, way more.

I ended up looking up a thing and I guess Disco Elysium is less open ended than I thought.
It turns out you can't actually go to the island before the tribunal happens.

I guess it makes sense that the tribunal is an important event in the story, but for some reason I thought it could be prevented.

Oh well, I guess I just got a bad ending where Kim got shot.

Yeah, the problem with battle passes is they demand engagement and feed off the fear of missing out

If there was a battle pass system that you could buy and then always have, like essentially buying a new progression that isn't tied to a period of time, so you could come back in six months and level it up more from right where you left off and still get all those rewards you technically paid for? That'd be the ideal I think

But that's too favorable a deal for the customer so you'll never, ever see it

I think we will see it, but only as this FOMO shit crests into some nightmarish extreme that finally causes widespread disgust, revulsion, and rejection. Aka, how Star Wars Battlefront 2 murdered the console lootbox industry and got a bunch of video game companies pulled in front of their local governments.

I've always said that if there's a scummy industry practice, Blizzard has always been at the forefront if not the pioneer(even back when they were the "good" Blizzard). They're already rising that tide - Overwatch has shifted into a far more calculating way to abuse FOMO in recent days. Their tactic now seems to be getting people playing again by a constant line of time-sensitive skins - play X amount of games a week, get this limited time skin that you'll never see again* if you don't play now now now. I guess the bet is that they'll bait some portion of that player base back into buying some loot boxes while they're back... or one of the Overwatch League token skins which also just happens to be only available for a limited time.

*at least until their next tactic becomes to Disney Vault them like Hearthstone is doing now.

MCC's season pass works this way as well. They're just free as part of the game, and you can spend your levels to advance any pass from any season.

So Almighty is way early and the combat is hells of janky but I REALLY like the promise it has. It's a basic town builder with you going to islands to gather materials and such, the kicker is you have to summon portals to send stuff back, you can't just carry it and then you have to defend the portals from monsters trying to stop you. You can send back stuff like minerals and such but you can also knockout wildlife and find townspeople and send them back as well. And there's a LOT to rebuild back on your island.

The two problems it has right now is melee combat is incredibly floaty and unsatisfying and it's very built for multiplayer; soloing is real hard.

This is how I felt when Sea of Thieves started doing passes. I like the game, and like the stuff in the pass, but I can play so rarely that I know I’d never get to the higher reward tiers before the time ran out so I just don’t buy anything.

I feel like I’d be ok with a battle pass system where it was split between free=time limited/paid=permanent?

So if you don’t buy the pass, your playtime earns whatever progression rewards are active that season. If you pay for a pass, then you can earn those rewards even after the season ends... so that way even if I don’t have a ton of playtime during the “80’s Theme Neon Season” I can still get the skins from the pass later on.
