people have a lot of nostalgia for space jam because they saw it when they were 10, and 10 year olds do not have discerning tastes when it comes to movies, and people have difficulty coping with the fact that things they are nostalgic for are often really mediocre to awful

the theme for the monstars, which I don't even remember if it was actually in the movie or strictly an album cut, is the hardest song ever made for a bugs bunny movie

It's a movie starring cartoons about a funny basketball game. The second version is less funny and more cynical. It doesn't have to be that deep? Anyone who is arguing that Space Jam (1) is actually a great, well thought out adult movie is being sort of strange, but I don't think suggesting it's a very enjoyable movie for kids is objectionable.

I can't decide which of Method Man, LL, or Busta Rhymes are the most necessary choice for this song.

(though Method Man's verse is the best)

quality and enjoyability are not synonymous

and this entire very public examination about the quality of space jam 1 happened because a whole bunch of people with nostalgia for the first were utterly flabbergasted that the second was trash

I think Space Jam 1 is high quality, just talking about the music and animation work alone. Enjoyability for kids is clearly high, that's why the second one exists and the debate as well.

the soundtrack to Space Jam 1 was good despite having Michael Jordan involved who, as the Last Dance has showed us, has always had very suspect taste in music, so Lebron's version of Space Jam having a bad soundtrack is, in fact, the worse betrayal than the movie also being bad

Space Jam having a baller soundtrack is just how it was back then. "Music from and inspired by" releases for movies were huge movers on the album charts in the 90s.

Yeah, from what I recall the song was released with not a ton of fanfare, then it got attached to the Batman Forever soundtrack and it was suddenly everywhere.

My memory could be absolutely wrong, but I don't recall anyone showing the original music video at all.

Other than the Weeknd song and All the Stars I think none of those tracks actually were in the film. It's kind of an aberration in that regard, as the old model had most, if not all, of the songs as spot inserts somewhere in the film - Hit 'Em High only shows up for like five seconds in Space Jam, for example. The Black Panther album is more like a concept album to go with the film. (It's also full of great songs.)

Charles Barkley: Shut Up And Jam Gaiden is one of those things that I absolutely adore and that I have less than zero desire to revisit and see how horribly it all ended up.

It also had a horrific kickstarter failure for the sequel, which somehow feels perfectly appropriate.

oh yeah it leans very hard into the "inspired by" half of that angle, for sure. I actually did hear a few of them on the radio around the time of the film's release and standalone singles. King's Dead goes especially hard as a villain song, for not actually showing up in the movie
