Windows Media player is removing information from MP3

When I update Album info in media player, it strips year, artist, genre, etc. from the actual MP3 file so if you restore from a backup, all of that information is not transferred.

Is there a way to get media player to update this information on the files themselves or keep it from deleting that information in the first place?

    Not really a media player, but I like Tag&Rename for organizing my music meta data. It is a really handy tool, as an example you can have it use the file names to create data in the files.

    Also just as a general rule. I avoid using Windows Media Player, it wants to log and share usage information with Microsoft and my music collection is mine not theirs.

    Media Monkey also does a good job especially with larger libraries.
