The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Back several years ago when 4th edition was a thing and wizards did organized weekly one shots at FLGS, for one week I made a set of characters for my then wife and myself to play in tandem.
The inspiration, from her side, was that she wanted to play a wizard with fire spells. So I picked only fire spells. Fire spells, like in the comic, were all AOEs that didn't distinguish between friend and foe, so my character was a warlord (i think that was the class) with a bunch of forced movement abilities, and the Fire Genasi race for the Fire resistance.
So basically I'd wade into the enemies and hold them in place while she rained fire on the lot of us.
As the only ranged caster in a group of melee classes, my 5e Warlock gets this a lot
Most of my spells are single target, but sometimes you've got to stop messing about, check with your party regarding their current hit points and likelihood of making their Saving Throws, and drop a Synaptic Static or Shatter into the mix
My wife used to play Star Trek Online with me. I set her up in a science ship with AOE tractor beams, spent a lot of my own money buying the right duty officers for her.
The strategy was, "Hit the tractor beams and fly into the middle, I'll hit them all with a torpedo spread." She doesn't play STO with me anymore.
In my defense, she never once died to my torpedoes. She died to the multiple warp core breaches at point blank range.

Most plays I've seen using Shatter/Fireball/etc they usually use it on flying enemies or position in such a way that the aoe just skirts the melee without hitting them. I'd be more wondering wtf the rest of your party is doing that they're constantly in friendly fire scenarios.

They're predominantly melee fighters so don't have much choice
And if the choice is one hit from me or six or seven hits from mooks, they often request the attack
