That Thing You [Coup]

ElJeffeElJeffe Registered User, ClubPA regular
So hey, for those who haven't heard, the ex president of the United States incited a violent coup against the government because he didn't want to stop being president.

Let's keep talking about that thing!

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

From the last thread, because it doesn't deserve to be lost:

Well here's something that's equal parts enraging and unsurprising.

From Roll Call: Capitol Police faced equipment shortage during Jan. 6 attack
Officers from that day noted that the insurrectionists came better equipped than the capitol police.

Can we stage a coup against the mods for punnery?

This is deeply concerning; numerous Secret Service agents were found out to be openly supporting the coup on social media. The agency needs a overhaul ASAP.

Aaaand McCarthy is now opposed to the very commission that he negotiated, throwing Katko (Republican guy they sent to negotiate it) under the bus, and pretty much dooms it in the Senate.

We knew this was the case before the coup even happened. The Secret Service has been in the tank for Trump for a long while now.

Very unlikely anything happens as a consequence.

Republican negotiates concessions on a subject and then opposes the whatever that they just negotiated. Lucy, football, etc.

can the president order an overhaul of the secret service?

Remember that there's more to the agency than protection details. A lot of them are just cops (they deal with counterfeiting and such)

The Secret Service recruits heavily from DHS and law enforcement agencies under the DOJ. The pool is saturated with fascists and proto-fascists. You can’t fix this with a scalpel.

    The rot is that deep.

The secret service doesn’t recruit. They don’t have to they get 100-150 applicants per job they put out. It is heavily former military, and they can choose from the top applicants. DHS ends up with the dregs. Secret service generally doesn’t touch them unless it’s specialists. They’ll take FBI or CIA if they are young enough.

It is my understanding the FBI is more likely to attract ex Secret Service than the reverse. SS detail has been described to me personally as a pretty boring and thankless job.

Almost definitely not. The USSS wears two completely unrelated hats, and each requires a totally separate set of skills from the other. The IT/financial guys aren't interchangeable with the close protection services.

It’s more about grade being offered. If an 11 can swing a 12 by jumping to the other org they do it.

In the ATF, Secret Service, and FBI the IT/financial guys aren't officers they're just employees. Everyone that goes to the respective academy to become special agents and carry guns have some sort of base training and then get assigned to a squad based on need and background experience. Their career growth goes on from there.

This dynamic does not include the CIA. They aren't federal officers and are an independent branch of the government thus function very differently.

GOP Sen. Mike Rounds tells me he wants a bipartisan commission focused on just 1/6 — and that if other issues need to be investigated they can decide that later. “We clearly had an insurrection on that particular day, and I don't want it to be swept under any rug,” he says.

Interesting. Rounds was NOT one of the seven senators who voted for impeachment. If we assume they all vote for this commission, then we're already at eight and only would need two more to get it past cloture/filibuster.

Didn't vote for impeachment + wants focus only on 1/6 = "all those people took it into their heads to show up and do a bad thing, purely on their own initiative and without anyone telling them to, and we should punish them for the bad thing they did and then close the book and never speak of this again."

Neat trick, saying you don't want something swept under the rug and then doing just that by giving it a quick, narrow "investigation" and equally speedy dismissal.

Nah, McCarthy wanted to rant about BLM and the Congressional baseball shooting in fucking 2017, so I think that's what he's rejecting.
