I like that you can play as Zelda and Urbosa (and Impa) in Age of Calamity but dear lord that game runs like garbage. Even the DLC trailer at the direct dipped to like 15 FPS.

(It would be really cool to play as Zelda for at least a portion of a mainline LoZ game though.)

Eff that man, I love seeing the frame rate drop in games like that

Sometimes seeing the game slow to a crawl makes me feel powerful, like what I’ve done or what the game is trying to show me is more than the hardware can handle. It’s a very specific feeling but like, the explosions in Star Fox 64, or certain fights in PS2 Shadow of the Colossus, and certain shmups and Musou games really do create that feeling

Or the game could run at a playable framerate and use the sound and visuals to create the feeling of player empowerment. Like a good action video game.

They can even use slowmo as an intentional effect and maintain high framerate while doing so.

I have no problem with a framerate dip when shit is going off, that can be fun
But hyrule warriors isn't framerate dipping, its like that no matter what is happening

Like, theoretically I agree with you here. The frame rate drop in ZoE 2 when you fire off homing lasers and everything explodes is sick as hell.

Unfortunately, that is not what the performance issues in Age of Calamity are. You can just be running through a field and shit will look bad.

Going back to the weapon durability system in Breath of the Wild, I ran across this video a whole back and thought that the creator had a decent approach to dealing with the issue.

    https://youtu.be/zhvuDcUx13Q

Essentially, if the developers are wedded to having a weapon durability system, then cause the weapons to break into fragments which can be then used for other upgrades or a crafting system. This turns the weapon breaking from something you dislike into something that will unlock additional power. He goes into a fair bit more depth, but the core of making a weapon breaking have a positive aspect rather than just a negative aspect I think has some good potential.

my biggest problem with weapon durability is actually that the game isn't animated correctly

link should look scrappier, more scrambly with his dodge, more desperate with his attacks. everything he holds should look like shit.

i legit think this would go a long way towards making it "feel" more better and correct, instead of looking like you made a regular legend of zelda game where things just stop existing sometimes

(also the menus and management should be improved but most people know that)

I didn't mind the weapon durability because I just made marks on the map where all the good items respawn so I could always just go grab more when I wanted them. For as much as people talk about not wanting to spend items, at least elixers in FF games were actually irreplaceable. Everything in BotW was replaceable.

I have played about two hours of BotW so far, which I believe qualifies me as something of an expert, and yeah this is about where I am at too.

Like, I'm actually feeling fine with weapon durability so far; it's kind of fun just running around scavenging shit all over the place like a demented squirrel, but I really wish there was more visual and tactile feedback for when stuff breaks, instead of just a text prompt followed by it suddenly vanishing into the ether.

it should explode when it breaks, you do double damage on the last hit of a weapon

Shitty old broken weapons should do less base damage but bonus tetanus damage

I really don't think that BotW needs a dedicated crafting system like this. But I also really don't like crafting systems, in general

it also turns breaking your weapon into something you need to do to upgrade/craft other weapons so now I am running around breaking all my weapons to gather crafting mats and you are seeing the problem with this?

there's already a bonus for breaking your weapon, and they're plentiful. making weapons crafted adds another layer of systems on top of that and complicates it more than it needs to be

I didn't like weapon durability in BotW, but it didn't really bother me that much either.

However, needing to grind broken weapons for crafting materials sounds awful, just awful, and way worse than what they have at the moment.

Link stores all the broken pieces from his weapons in a pouch.

Have an additional dodge move wherein he just fuckin throws this mishmash of splinters, jagged metal shards, bone slivers, and magical dust crap at the faces of the baddie he's dodging.
