Yes, this. Also it's worth noting that it's a new use of an older term--"simp"--which just meant "a silly or foolish person."
So it's not always a tell about the person's cultural/background views, especially if they're older; I remember my mom calling people "simps" when I was growing up, before the internet was even really a thing

Like with work, the roleplaying game I’m in every week, depending on who I’m talking to, is anywhere from a ‘longstanding obligation from 6-10PM’, to ‘weekly game night’ to ‘a roleplaying game; you know like dungeons and dragons?’ to a twenty minute conversation I just had with my data science bro cause he was asking a bunch of questions about it and had played some roleplaying games a while ago etc
Generally I can do that with more niche internet shit too but I was surprised by lack of knowledge on Rowling; that seemed like more general knowledge (but maybe only if you know a lot of gay people)
