Why in the world
would anybody be sad about Kraid being chained up? If it's the actual Kraid, he's an entirely sentient, and murderous, member of the Space Pirates that has slaughtered an indeterminate number of people. He has several intrinsic combat capabilities, aside from being physically enormous, tremendously strong, and able to absorb a huge amount of damage. Putting massive restraints on him is probably the only way to keep him captive, and the other options are to destroy him or let him run free to destroy whatever he wants.

All I’m going to say
The remake of the title screen music for Metroid 1 that they had at the end of that trailer?
Copying Kraid or Ridley? That amateur shit is for ignorant federation humans, never innovating, merely stealing genes. If "good" Chozo could invent metroids, I'm not surprised if evil Chozo *engineered* all these key space pirates from the start.
With Kraid back, I'm guessing it'll be a no brainer that some variant of Ridley has to be back also. Maybe it turns out the evil Chozo are cloning old enemies of Samus for some reason.
The only Metroid games without Ridley are Metroid 2 and Metroid Prime 2, right? So since Dread doesn't have a 2 in the title, Ridley's a given.
The original Metroid 2 didn't have it, but Samus Returns had him show up at the end to attempt to steal the Metroid hatchling.

Ooh, yes... it would definitely be a shame if someone did that with all the nigh-invincible super robots and such running around, wouldn't it?

They're only nigh-invincible to Samus. This guy could just smash the shit out of them or ignore them.
Not to mention he's fully sentient, so letting him run loose on a planet with loads of high-tech Chozo shit would be a really, really awful idea guaranteed to get a lot of people killed when he inevitably escapes.
This isn't an alien bear or something, this is a giant murder-person who worked for Team Murder performing lots of murder on a regular basis.
Kraid is less sad, misunderstood monster like King Kong and more like that Simpsons episode where the billboards come to life and purposely fuck shit up even after they get what they want.
The Metroid manga can't exactly be regarded as completely accurate source material, but good sized chunks of the themes, ideas and outright plot beats it contains have filtered through to the actual games mostly intact.
And there's a few bits that has some particularly interesting implications:
According to that old sixteen-parter, the Chozo have as a species taken to total pacifism at some point in their history, to better facilitate and lend credibility to their attempts at spreading galactic peace. This went so far as to install mental blocks in themselves, that would cause them pain, actual harm and possibly even death, if they ever were to harm another being.
Obviously, this new, though presumably very ancient dude, didn't see the point in any of that, whatsoever.
On top of that, the Chozo memories from Samus Returns, as well as the murals shown off so far in trailers and promos, portray an internal relationship between the Chozo that is even reflected in Samus foster Chozo parents, Old Bird and Grey Voice. Old Bird represents a kind of warm, philosophical and scientific yet spiritual mind, with indirect diplomatic solutions to problems. Grey Voice approaches everything with a cold logic and a stern hand, fully capable of indirect solutions but of the sneaky, power relations management sort you'd see from a grizzled veteran with a martial mindset. Sorta like a certain Chozo scientist, who through bioengineering, scienced up a biological solution to the biological problem of the X parasite on SR388... And the warlike Chozo landing on the planet, taking stock of the situation and promptly eliminating the survivors, perhaps just to make absolutely sure no parasitic contamination left the planet?
If I remember right, even some of the Prime games, particularly Corruption, obliquely spell out some sort of internal "conflict of the minds" within the Chozo, between old and new ideas? This was supposedly resolved without issue between all Chozo parties, with them relaying their experiences and cautioning other intelligent species about not fighting amongst themselves, or with others with other ideas.
Anyway, something's definitely up with that dude. It's not exactly lorewisely waterproof, but the Chozo seem like they should have a well-deserved, in-universe reputation as dedicated pacifists, all-understanding compassionate diplomat-types. Whoever that dude is, he's definitely loudly and proudly smashing all of that to bits, and very spitefully not bothering to sort the broken pieces for recycling.

My bet?
He's Chozo Samus. He's either a Chozo from before they swore to total pacifism from back when they were legendary as a warrior race or he's what they tried to make before Samus came along. One of their own volunteered to forego pacifism, they removed the blocks that kept him from violence, built him his own armor, and then he went nuts and they put him in stasis or something. When that failed, they started looking to other races besides themselves to see if they could find a candidate where they wouldn't go nuts from fighting, and that's when they found Samus.
In either case it makes for a great explanation as to why Chozo sites scattered around the galaxy have Samus-compatible stuff. The original chosen Champion went crazy and they took all his gear and hid or locked it all away, just in case he ever woke up (and they wouldn't kill him, being pacifists). Now he's back and gearing up, but the question is for what. His interpretation of "peace" could very well be "Chozo run everything because everyone else is idiots", so he's gearing up to build his own galaxy-conquering force.
my understanding is that Samus’s training and suit are both part of the Warrior path the Chozo could follow, back in the day. Most of them swore to pacifism, and the Warrior path went almost completely untrod, but they chose to train Samus in their ways, because she chose that path after the pirates destroyed her home. Some Chozo have future sight, but the suit being something that’s existed before sure would explain those murals and stuff, depicting Samus’s armor.

If they had a point where the Warrior path went off the rails and caused a bigtime threat, it could certainly be a reason as to why the Chozo all choose pacifism. Though that would mean the prophets among the Chozo would've seen Samus blowing up planets and going "no big deal", which would mean that whoever the "bad" Hunter was had to be really really bad.

At 1:27 there's a brief glimpse of a golden chozo armor thing, except its full of black ichor and opens a ragged maw. Try slowing down to .25 play speed to see it clearer. It smells a bit of an X imitation after its taken some damage and is breaking down. So I'm not too sure on "evil" chozo guy really being about eradicating the X above all else, when at least some of his soldiers probably have it. Maybe that was the only way he could raise a violent "chozo" army. Hell maybe the general himself is simply an X puppet, but that would be pretty disappointing. More interesting would be if he engineered X in the first place or at least somehow controls it...

I was wondering if maybe that wasn't just MercurySteam's interpretation of a
Torizo. They get all wet and drippy when you blow open their chest cavity in Super Metroid. Maybe they've just been full of goo all this time?

It's a hard light suit that can also fuze to Samus if accidentally exposed to a very dangerous space parasite. Does it make sense? Not really...but then again, that's space bird magic technology for you. :P

It's always hard to say for sure what's going on. Whatever else he is, it could be he's also just so heavily cyberized, a la Mother Brain (Which the last of the Chozo also created) that he can comfortably skirt any mental blocks against causing harm, by abstracting any harm caused through layers of machinery and cybernetics. He could probably be able to resist X infection at least a little just from this fact, but presumably there's still a limit to this resistance. Considering the bio-mech security bot B.O.X. from Fusion got assimilated just by having an organic brain that the X could infect, chances are he's not safe regardless. Unless we're literally staring down a full robot, which isn't impossible, but the Chozo have seemed to prefer bioweapon-based solutions to problems so far. Any possible Torizo relation is also kind of a tossup.
I'm calling him "Zod" until we get a name for him. From reading the above, he seems like a "Zod" to me.
His vestments, and tons of other written material in his vicinity, actually repeat the phrase "Hadar Sen Olmen" in Chozo alphabet. He even appears to say it himself in the new trailer. Is that a name, title, rank, function, origin, faction? Who knows, but it's definitely a very specific moniker.

They appear to get these spiffing, massive maw-like heads that the SA-X showed off at the end of Fusion in its last, straight up fight against Samus. The X seem like they might degenerate into monstrous and amalgamated forms, with growths and tentacles and warts all over. Could be infected Torizo guardians, could be full on infected Chozo, or its leftover, empty armor that just serves as a handy shell to control and use for a blobbified mass of X.

Metroid and SA-X conjecture
So it's going to be the Pus of Man from DS3
As of that short ~30 second teaser, it seems Samus herself at least instantly groks how bad things are. When that other, actually seemingly living Chozo appears, her mind snaps to the memory witnessed in Samus Returns of that very same Chozo scientist encountering the X. For a few frames, she even flashes back to the SA-X, with it perfectly replicating her likeness with cold, dead eyes and wearing her old-style chunky Varia suit with exposed breathing tubes and all. Presumably, after any potential Chozo infection the X would take on some pretty significant Chozo traits along with their knowledge and information, which really just makes the whole situation suck. Are they gonna insidiously Big Wisdom an actual plan for galactic takeover, utilizing the Chozo's status as known diplomats, advisors and master bioengineers? Would any good-hearted Chozo leading principles even make it through X-infection and subsequent replication, sort of like how the SA-X went after the omega Metroid in an imitation of Samus' own history with the thing?
Anyway. That moment in the teaser trailer is, to my mind, her deciding right then and there that the whole place is way overdue for atomization, supernova explosion style.
And you gotta admit, with that kind of outlook, it definitely seems prudent to just blow the whole thing up somehow. Since I doubt the whole thing would just be rigged to blow, maybe this time she can find a black hole or something to dump the whole planet into. Would make for a nice spaghettified inversion of the trope.

SA-X went after the omega metroid because it's an omega metroid and likes to eat X parasites.

I thought this too, then looked up the price of physical copies on eBay
Anyway, I'm biased, but I do think it's a neat thing to have around. They're clearly not doing the Virtual Console again, so it's a neat machine to have retro stuff on, if nothing else.
I should get the GBA version of Mario 3 on it at some point; it's got all the E-Reader levels unlocked on that version, including ones we never got in the west on cards.
All this WiiU talk is making me want to pick another one up. I traded mine in when I got a Switch. Will I still have access to my VC stuff from the Wii and WiiU or is that all tied to the original system I had and now lost like tears in rain?

My understanding is that all the original Wii content is tied to the console and is gone, but anything you downloaded for the Wii U is tied to your Nintendo account and you can redownload.

I'm not super sure how true this is. I feel like originally stuff was tied to the console like Wii, but at some point Nintendo fixed it so it's account based. Unless I'm just totally mis-remembering this. But if you owned one long enough it's probably fine? (but yeah, that Wii stuff is probably gone)

Nintendo probably fixed nothing. I would guess that if the service was still running, their customer support could maybe do a one way transfer to your new Wii, but now that stuff is all offline so their support would probably do a shrug emoji.

Yeah I honestly can't remember but I feel like Wii U was still part of the era of jank in terms of tying stuff to console. I can't remember with the "Nintendo Accounts" came out but that was when they started fixing it (but maybe only for Switch?) (I vaguely recall Nintendo Accounts coming in the wake of Miiverse dying tho...)

I'm currently playing Super Metroid on my slow playthrough. I'm not super worried about getting through all of them since I also don't want to burnout on the series before Dread comes out.
Zero Mission was great to play through again. I still kinda hate the zero suit section though. Samus Returns was fantastic and made me sad I had waited so long to play it. The Ridley fight at the end was kinda pointless, but it was neat seeing Mercury Steam bridge Prime 3 and Super Metroid even in a small way.
I played some of AM2R, but can't find the motivation to keep going. It's really well done and polished, but in the end it's a fan game and has no bearing on the official series. So yea, I might finish it at some point, but not right now.
I was hoping to play through Other M and Fusion again before Dread, but time is limited....so I'll probably just do Fusion since it is the direct lead in to Dread.
At some point down the line I'll replay the Prime games and Other M.
NNIDs used on the 3DS do have an online record of purchases, but they only apply to one system at a time. If you didn't do a system transfer, you have to call customer support to get them moved onto a different 3DS. Maybe Wii U was a similar halfway system?

The remake of the title screen music for Metroid 1 that they had at the end of that trailer?
Yes, please.
Ah, seriously? Lame.
Ooh, yes... it would definitely be a shame if someone did that with all the nigh-invincible super robots and such running around, wouldn't it?

Not to mention he's fully sentient, so letting him run loose on a planet with loads of high-tech Chozo shit would be a really, really awful idea guaranteed to get a lot of people killed when he inevitably escapes.
This isn't an alien bear or something, this is a giant murder-person who worked for Team Murder performing lots of murder on a regular basis.
But that's what I'm saying: what if that's what we want?

The Metroid manga can't exactly be regarded as completely accurate source material, but good sized chunks of the themes, ideas and outright plot beats it contains have filtered through to the actual games mostly intact.
And there's a few bits that has some particularly interesting implications:
