Can anyone help me with what I'm looking at here? I'm on a Galaxy S9. I've got some pics and videos, I've got maybe 200 tracks downloaded on Spotify, but I'm not sure if those would be listed as Audio or Apps. I have no idea what all of that App data is?

    @SummaryJudgment

I can't help with the specific causes of your storage being full, but you should probably make it un-full ASAP. Full internal storage can cause phone reboots/crashes, and I know from experience that if it's full and your carrier tries to force an update, it can potentially grenade the data on the internal storage completely. No recovery service on the planet is gonna be able to restore that corrupted data if that happens, and you'll need a repair shop to do a super factory reset just to get it running again.

I should probably just do a forum search and see what past threads there have been on the topic, I think the only thing that I'd think of off the top of my head is that Julian Assange sucks

    Game things

1 - I played Dark Alliance finally man what a throughly mediocre game. But it would be a good background game while you listened to a podcast or just was shooting the shit with some friends over Voice chat

Also the Xbox version is 100% cross play AND progression with PC and is on game pass and streaming so damn you can play that shit anywhere

2 - Kiddo picked up Titanfall 2 on his own and and I’m the happiest parent

It's not cowardice to decide it's not worth sticking around to be excessively punished, and Assange wasn't even an American anyway and so didn't even have a notional duty to the US in any way

Eh. iPhones are too slick, so they often slip out of my hands. I prefer having at least a silicone or leather case for some small amount of grip. Also, a tempered glass screen protector has saved my screen way too many times to go without it.

I mean, it's either that or implant some Magsafe magnets to my palm or something. I mean, I got the COVID vaccine and everything, but the promised magnetic powers never manifested.

A while back, Hahnsboo removed the case of her smartphone (it's a cheap little old thing, like a Motorola Moto G6 or something), and there were a huge amount of spiderweb cracks ALL over the back. Her screen protector also has a hair-thin line on it. She's probably going to continue to use it that way until the next time it gets tossed in the laundry (the fate of her LAST smartphone).

She does not take care of her smartphones very well, which is why she usually gets uber-cheap ones.

For all of its problems the US is not Putin's Russia, not anywhere close. The US government has been trying to extradite him for years and will be perfectly happy to throw him in prison, but they are not trying to assassinate the guy, and there's no reason to believe they are.

What I really enjoyed about that video was MMF calling out Kubrick for being a “look at this!” kind of story teller instead of one with an interest in examining the subject or the forces that shape it. Pairing The Shining with Lost Highway is kinda brilliant because they’re only a few years apart, but the former is “What if a misogynist went crazy and killed people he loved?” and the latter asks why a misogynist would do that. One is exploitation, the other examination, and much of Kubrick’s work is just really high-end exploitation, asking “What if?” but going no further.

I've seen 2001, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut and honestly have never really understood the level of worship Kubrick receives. 2001 was groundbreaking, but The Shining is overrated and I literally do not understand Eyes Wide Shut's critical acclaim.

It’s a lot easier to understand when you consider the industry and critics were, like, 98% male during Kubrick’s career.

Ebert’s rant against Blue Velvet is an all-time great example of men being upset by not being catered to

Atomika’s long-held hot take: Roger Ebert, despite being an important figure in the film preservation movement, was a dogshit critic.

I'm fond of Ebert because he was a friend of a family friend, and everything I heard about him personally was very positive. He'd run movie nights for the school fundraiser. He was a very warm and pleasant guy, and did not have his nose in the air at all despite his fame.

So I looked up the Blue Velvet review just to see what was going on there. His main criticism seems to be (Blue Velvet spoilers):
the film juxtaposes harrowing S&M sequences against a caricature of 50s sitcom suburbia, and the campiness of the latter are in bad taste when juxtaposed against the former

I haven't seen the movie, is that totally wrong? Like, generally I hate Lynch's hopping-around surrealism and this seems like something I would also be likely to think about one of his films, but I also haven't seen Blue Velvet specifically so idk if Ebert's take here is insane or not.

The whole throughline of Blue Velvet is that conventionalism is a veneer we put on for safety to hide us from the more visceral and upsetting realities of the world, so yes, Ebert missed the extremely-obvious point completely on that.

He was not a very perceptive critic, and had terrible recall at times.

He doesn't miss that point in the review--he sees the message, but thinks its delivery is hamfisted and the message itself is pretty facile: "What are we being told? That beneath the surface of Small Town, U.S.A., passions run dark and dangerous? Don't stop the presses."

I don't think this is a good grounds for saying that he wasn't a perceptive critic; it sounds like you both perceived similar things but had a difference of opinion on how to evaluate them.

@MrMister Ebert also discussed the movie a few times in other places (his show, retrospectives etc) and said he felt like Isabella Rossellini was being exploited to dubious ends.

I'm not sure I agree, but his review is to me nearly the definition of a fair, thoughtful take 5hat I disagree with. Needless to say, I also do not share Atomika's take that he was just too conventional-white-man to handle something so daringly transgressive etc etc. The things I love the movie for are very much not that.
