It's very funny because by the time 7 came out, Vista was actually good and people acted like they were exorcising a demon from their computer by upgrading to 7
EDIT: Also 8's issues were mostly on a presentation front
BroloBroseidonLord of the BroceanRegistered Userregular
nah vista had all kinds of performance issues and DRM problems and compatability issues when moving from XP
they improved it over time, but people who hated it had some pretty good reasons not to like it
I remember the system not letting ANYTHING go fullscreen when i was using my ATI All-In-Wonder videocard and TV-tuner combo, because it wasn't signed with the right HDCP handshake, and Vista wouldn't let you roll drivers back once they were signed
Remember having to load Windows from MS dos shell? That was fun. I only needed it for like one or two games, everything else just ran from dos.
Man I fuckin hated dos. Fuck typing in commands, just let me use the mouse to click on stuff like a civilized person
nah that's what dos shell was!
a mouse-driven GUI... but for dos
finally you could run unprotected run-time applications that would re-write critical operating system files from the comfort of a mouse based interface

I didn't know about that! I was very young back then and didn't know much about computers at all

On the topic of games, a couple more little demo reviews:
OGOPOGO: a game about palindromes It's a match-three sort of game, coloured blocks try to fill up your playspace and you have to get rid of them, but instead of matching red, red, red or blue, blue, blue, you have to make a palindrome, so it would be red, or red, blue, red, or red, yellow, green, blue, green, yellow, red.
It's fun to play and nicely polished - and also I know how good I am at anything past the most basic versions of this sort of block-matching game, and that is "not very good at all". If you are good at making combos in puyo puyo and that sort of thing, then you will probably like this one, though.
Square Paper City. I'm not quite sure what this wants to be -- it has the "explore a world that is mostly invisible" sort of feeling of The Unfinished Swan, mixed with the "jump over things on the beat" as you rush towards them feel of Thumper/Temple Run/etc, mixed with the "world is made of cubes" feel of, oh, lots of games.
I went through most of the demo (I think), but at one point I couldn't work out where I had to go / what I had to do next, and just hadn't had enough fun along the way to want to keep going. I feel like there's a good game in there somewhere, it just needs to be a lot more obvious to me, the player, how to find that good game.

The Steam Summer Sale is live!
The Steam Summer Sale has begun
This year's big event includes deep discounts, new stuff in the Points Shop, and 14 'micro-adventures' to solve.
pcgamer.com
A new kind of mystery simulation game where you must deduce not only the culprit, but the victim as well!
2075, London.
Heinous crime around the world has been reduced by 90 percent thanks to the implementation of a “Foresight AI” which is able to predict future crimes based on information found on the network.
However, the Foresight AI predicts a future where the world falls into ruin due to incidents which cannot be prevented.
This concerns the system developers, who engineer an AI that specializes in tracking and solving these crimes.
The new AI is given the name “Sherlock” as an homage to the legendary detective of old.
Pursuing a number of cases leads Sherlock to a single conclusion.
At the center of these incidents Sherlock’s equal rival, the AI “Moriarty,” lies in wait.
Key Features
A murder case where the victim is yet unknown:
A group of travelers get snowed in by a blizzard, leaving them to fend for themselves until help arrives.
Unbeknownst to them, there is a “Villain” hidden among them with their murderous sights set on a “Target” they wish to destroy.
The Moriarty side player must meet several conditions before they can succeed in their murder plot. Likewise, the players on the Sherlock side will be working to
Put an end to the lethal games. The truth of who the Villain and who the Target are will come to light as the game unfolds.

Got my first win with Roguebook.
Only took me about seven runs, so I think generally speaking this is a fair bit easier than Slay the Spire. Although I'm not sure if I had the best possible deck or the worst possible deck for the end boss I encountered, so I might have gotten lucky.
The NG+ stuff is pretty neat - rather than the straight ascension mode of Slay the Spire, you get a bunch of different negative modifiers you can choose to apply to your game, split across three different categories (which you can use in combination). You start with only three available, one for each category, but there are a bunch you can unlock.
Overall it's a game that I think is as mechanically neat (or maybe even neater) as Slay the Spire, but I don't love the story (which is mostly non-existent) or the aesthetics/setting/theme. Slay the Spire managed to do so much with so little there, so it's also hard to hold it against other games, but also the style of StS was laser focused on my sort of thing.

speaking of deckbuilders
let's slay this spire together, as a family
Deck:
what are my moves for this turn? got 4 energy, and then my happy flower will give me 5 energy next turn
frozen core will also give me one ice orb at the end of this turn, which will give me three block

Coolheaded for sure. If it pulls another frost based thing or a better defense, use that as well. Powers are dangerous, but I'd be willing to toss out a defrag or two at that stage if you get one, probably nothing else you've got though.
If it doesn't pull anything useful, I guess just bite, barrage, and defend after that.
Straightzi on

shame that it looks like your deck is the exact thing woke bloke eats for breakfast, but if you can get scaling going fast enough you should win. if you feel confident enough in that, playing machine learning to get to echo form/apotheosis/creative AI faster makes sense
Urgh. I'm almost temped to just force field, and save art of war energy for next turn and hope we draw better could beam cell/bite front cultist as well

I think this one would have fewer defenders than Vista, though:
And I just remembered that there's a little toolkit inside there, which I'm sure I can find a use for:

as always, takes a while for the prices to update
Man remember a few years after that having to exit Win95 and reboot into DOS mode?
Could just be lag in sales going up - I know it usually takes a little bit when steam sales start.

yes, war of the chosen is a great addon
it can be pretty overwhelming though, and it essentially modifies the vanilla xcom campaign to add a whole bunch of new stuff to it
so if you haven't done *any* xcom before, maybe just play a little bit of vanilla to get a feel for it, and then try it again with War of the Chosen
I probably won't buy anything
