Diablo 4 game director Luis Barriga, Blizzard lead level designer Jesse McCree, and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft were let go from Blizzard on Wednesday, two sources with knowledge of the move told Kotaku.
The news was delivered to development teams today but has not yet been officially announced. A source confirmed to Kotaku that the three developers’ names are no longer visible in Blizzard’s internal directory or Slack. Activision Blizzard did not immediately return a request for comment.
In an interview with Eurogamer earlier this year, Diablo franchise head Rod Fergusson emphasized the feature would be included in the final game.
"You can still connect locally through TCP IP if you want to!" Fergusson said. "That was there in D2. It'll be there in D2R. We've really focused on making sure that if there's something about the core experience you loved, we're bringing that over. But we do get a lot of benefits from being on a more secure platform."
The stated reason for removing it is security, which sounds like a pretext
I'm going to guess the primary motivators were DRM control and having a secure platform they can slip mictrotransactions into a few months after release.
Like, there's literally no reason Diablo 3 couldn't have been playable local-only either, and yet.

this actually holds up really well in first person view!
usually 3rd person/isometric games don't bother modeling anything you can't see from the default perspective, but I guess the ascent has enough areas with camera rotations that they just added detail from every angle

I doubt things will get better as long as Moneyball is in charge of the company. Kotick will do JUST enough to make shareholders happy and not an iota more.

Prior history at Riot and Ubisoft says that apart from a few lambs for the sacrifice, practically nothing gets changed save for high level management patting themselves on the back for a job well done.
The difference here is there's an actual state civil action breathing down their neck, so we'll see how that plays.

I earnestly did not expect Luis Barriga and Jesse McCree to get the axe.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Firing a handful of dudes does not change the culture at that company, and I sincerely hope nobody gets fooled into believing otherwise
Firing some people can have a chilling effect on others. Eg look at all the police throwing wobblies and quitting because one (1) cop got done for murder. So even this small action will have certain people looking to leave the company or make them think twice. Not saying that's all that's needed, but that even a small change can have a big impact.

...are they going to change the name of the Overwatch cowboy because maybe they should think about it

like I know it's way down the list of consequential changes they need to make but also they should absolutely change it (and honestly it'll cost them a bunch of money to rerecord stuff so uh it's also not nothing)
After some intensive research I have confirmed that I do not enjoy gacha games.
Even the one with huge, terrifying, anime tits wasn't enough to keep me interested.
I don't have the compulsion or gambling wiring in my brain to keep me hooked.
I will never be a whale.
The only one I kinda liked was Angel Legion because you can unlock different outfits and it has a photo mode.
I try a lot of them but I've only gotten into a handful of them. They make some character who has a backstory I get into, or there's something really compelling about a specific character, or it's real pretty.. there's gotta be something to hook me.

Including both “secure” and insecure modes (like ye olde open and closed battle.net) would make it much easier for hackers to break the secure mode, as well. Security techniques like address obfuscation are way less effective if a hacker has an unprotected version of the game available to reference.
Blizzard will never, ever release another game with player hosted servers for both DRM and security reasons

I had one gacha game I liked to play. it was an auto battler of the... ~spicy~ variety, but it ran on java, so rip.

Okay I'm just got to second phase of lolblizzard for the day how everyone saying they "removed TCP/IP" and shit from D2R and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. No they fuckin didn't, else the fuck protocol stack they using then, IPX?
This shouldn't bother me so much, but I didn't study dumb shit like the OSI model to let this inaccurate nonsense slide.

Technically, the TCP/IP model is distinct from the OSI model, but, pedantry!
Sounds like the historical name for being able to connect directly to friends in Diablo 2 wasn’t exactly well named. Hearing that they were dropping TCP/IP support gave me pause too.

Are you mad at Blizzard or people mocking them? Because this is the direct quote Blizzard gave out.
"Q: Will TCP/IP support be available in the Early Access to Open Beta tests?
A: TCP/IP support will not be available in the upcoming Beta or the final game. After careful deliberation, we will no longer be supporting this option as we identified potential security risks and are committed to safeguarding the player experience."
It is clearly not anyone's fault but theirs for repeating that statement.

Can't wait till they fire baal
That's nuts.
The one?
The one that's name is one 's away from being the name of a famous R&B group! That one!
It was boring!
Tony! Toni! Tiddies! was a masterpiece, how dare you.
Oh, DC?

What the fuck
The worst thing about trailers like this is you can be like, okay, I WILL play that game, that looks wild!
... and then it's NOTHING like that.
And it's actually the most generous gacha i've ever seen. That's how bad the genre is.
