I know they are making fun of how few companies own or make everything in the economy thread in D&D. Just I did not know Cheese Nips were made by Kellogg's I thought they were pulled because of the similar name game

As always, there is some consideration and soul-searching one must undergo before celebrating the death of a human being.
On the other hand, imagining the look on the face of a BMW-ass BMW driver in mid-rampage getting drawn down on by a Prius driver is very funny and satisfying in a Cohen brothers kind of way.
It depressed me though because if I was the Prius driver I would likely be dead now seeing as I don't own a gun....
Cripes if I wanted to not support those companies I basically choose to never eat, clean, flavor or season anything ever again.
My main issue there would be dairy, sugar, and flour I think. It's possible to get fruit, vegetables, and meat without going through them (though potentially a bit pricier). Penzey's is independent of all of them for spices as far as I can tell. Edit: Pasta would be hard too. Rice is simpler though I think, at least.
Post isn't actually on that chart, but is another bit of a conglomerate (not sure it's quite to that scale). Actually, not really sure if Coca-Cola needs to be on there if they can't link anything outside of beverages to them.
Still ridiculously hard to avoid them since they're all layers and layers of shell companies.
It's a little thing but when I get bread or bagels I try to get a brand called Dave's Killer Bread, founded by a former felon. Though I think last I checked some lawsuit forced him out of running the company?

... wait, what?
ED: No, he just sold the company. More on the story here if you want it.
I like to get my dairy from co-ops like Cabot and am fortunate to have a selection of farmers' markets who carry a large variety of produce and meats. We even get our OJ from a small-batch producer but mainly because it tastes much better than the national brands.
One thing COVID did was fuck up logistics so much that the local supermarkets are carrying more local stuff these days and that's been nice.
You might be surprised by how much stuff you can buy local, especially if you have farmers' markets
There's even a new flour mill in town, here, that established itself pretty recently next to my favourite brewery
Lots of farms around here doing delivery of anything from meat to eggs and dairy too
It costs a little more but also inflation hasn't quite hit them yet the way it has at the grocery store, so fresh eggs here are only maybe a buck more than the supermarket ones right now

dave's killer bread is now owned by the same company that owns tastykake and wonderbread

Well, glad he's doing better these days. I last heard about him years ago and it made it seem like his breakdown had been used to force him out via lawsuit

ajax was a good one definitely. my favorite thing about that one is we hear about it as if it was this meticulously planned masterstroke of skullduggery that went off according to plan without a hitch, when in reality it was theodore roosevelt's grandson running around tehran with sheafs of cash bribing high-up military guys without any real plan at all
a good book about the many and varied crimes of the CIA is Legacy of Ashes by tim weiner. the author wrote for the new york times for awhile but don't let that fool you, it's actually well researched and correct in the details. there's things i don't like about it, he leaves a lot out and he's coming at it from a perspective of america being good and there needs to be a competent CIA which i think is dead wrong, but it's a good intro to the subject before getting into stuff like the jakarta method or killing hope or the devil's chessboard
e: CIA as organized crime is another one. i haven't read it yet myself but people whose opinion i respect think highly of it

I'm not entirely sure where to post this, so you guys get it.
my friend's mom, a relatively strict "Some Christian Offshoot" lady, has commissioned several portraits/portrayals of Jesus as a middle eastern man for her house, because "he's from the middle east and if we're going to worship someone, it should be the right person." and I love it.
less thrilled are the members of her church, where she's been campaigning for them to change their iconography.
I previously had no strong feelings about this lady, but now I would die in her army.

Don't forget the circus performers and other randos Kermit bribed to start a pro-Shah demonstation, like 2 days before the actual ouster and storming of Mossedeq's house.
And Mohammed Shah Pahlavi's response when news of the successful coup arrived at the Excelsior Hotel in Rome where he was having a lavish breakfast while in hiding after high-tailing it with over $100 million in cash several weeks before (in 1953 dollars!), "I knew they still loved me!"

Wonder if she could reach some of them by bringing up that the typical iconography of the logos most Protestant denoms and Catholics have adopted since the late 15th century is based on the bastard son (Caesarae) of one of most corrupt popes on record (Rodrigo Borgia/Alexander VI) who's known for wanting to know his sister biblically, most likely murdering his brother Juan with his own two hands and wanted to carve out his own private empire in the Papal States and the southern Alps.

I can't believe I learned that the contemporary depiction of Jesus was actually some Pope's son from an Assassin's Creed game of all things.
It's feels like something that would be considered historical trivia, but is a pillar for one of the world's major religions and has been used for centuries as a justification for bigotry and hatred. Just wild shit.

It's a somewhat contentious claim, but one with quite a bit of evidence behind it. There were always rumors that Rodrigo actually instantiated Caesare=Jesus as an official rule (cause the entire Borgia family lived in their own asses) via Papal encyclical that wasn't distributed widely due to Luther starting his dust up soon after Rodrigo and Caesare both died and the Holy See's focus shifted to other things, though nothing has been found in the Vatican archives that's official, just some notes from a couple of Alexander's secretaries about his proposed agendas.
It is known that Caesare posed for at least 5 different works in various churches as the Lamb during Rodrigo's pontificate and they were paid for by the Church directly and that a lot of Roman and Florentine artists studied those as the newest examples of more naturalistic styles when the Renaissance was first building steam and their subsequent works leaned heavily towards those exemplars. And since it's far easier to copy than create and the artists from that era of history were put on such a pedestal that sheer inertia has kept it going.

I enjoyed Ass 3 more, and very much enjoyed whatever the one with Bayek was, I cannot remember the actual title, but Ass Bro was the best one of the first four games, at least for me
You got to fight the Pope! And calling your henchmen or proteges or disciples or whatever in as back up during a big old fracas was cool as hell

yeah I know the strike is over but I'll wait for the union-made stuff to cycle through the supply chain for a while.

The factory is literally down the road from me. Great folks there, and they've been working hard during Covid to keep everyone safe.
Anyway I'm happy that we have local brands for most things, except apparently for toothpaste which is all owned by our megacorp overlords.

In terms of seminal fuck-ups that still reverberate to this day, I gotta go with Operation Ajax from 1953.

Pretty well the peak of the series for me. Just enough mechanics and history nods to be cool, but not too far up it's own ass with everything.

Will now be facing his upcoming trials as a private citizen.
