Matchbox Twenty's Bent was #1 on the Billboard charts, ousting Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want.
The highest grossing movie was X-Men.
It's been downhill ever since.
OMG, I feel young! I am not used to this!
It's hard to say. All join dates have been reset over later forum iterations. Mine is the only one that the archeologist dug up and placed on display.
EDIT: It was Penny-Arcade Year 2, so there's a good chance that someone other than Gabe and Tycho are still around from Year one.
Edit: The most terrifying thing I can imagine is to be forced to read all of my posts from the beginning.
I first started reading the comic after a bit on tech TV where leo Laporte was showing a computer program to aggregate webcomics and mentioned in passing that penny arcade was one not suitable for kids. So I being a teen, immediately looked it up .

The domain twitter.com came online on January 21, 2000.
could also be because the forums went fully down for a period of time in there. iirc it was in august/september of 2002, or thereabouts. they didn't come back officially (there was a succession of ezboards in the interrim) until, I want to say, spring of 2003.
That sounds familiar, could be what happened. Regardless, I've spent close to half of my life on these forums.
July 19th, 2000...
I didn't have internet back then.
Get off my lawn!
I think I started posting in 2004?
When was SE++ called H&R?
WoW didn’t come out until 2004
Battlenet was only a year old in 2000
was probably 2004 then! I was in the beta the summer before it released but I don't think I found PA until after that
*edit* it used to look like this https://web.archive.org/web/20010526193054/http://www.penny-arcade.com/phorum/list.php?f=8

Rock Band DLC | GW:OttW - arrcd | WLD - Thortar
it launched in 1996(dec 31st, really, 1997). I remember playing diablo 1 on it
Oh hmm that was apparently the Warcraft 2 Battlenet edition.
Naturally, that was shut down like 2 or 3 weeks later. Then I proceeded to not post until I landed my first job out of college in 2007.
Back in 2000? 2001ish? I would print out the previous days comic and post it on my dad's white board in his classroom. He is a high school math teacher, and he had one board with a section dedicated kind of as a fun community area where you could post stuff or write messages within reason. Basically an actual in person message board, before the digital equivalent became so ubiquitous.
So it collected all kinds of wacky stuff like Weekly World News articles with names replaced with teachers names, sports results clippings for bragging rights, Homestar Runner shit, etc. I got into the habit of posting the PA comic. Definitely also remember signing up for, then pretty quickly noping out of those old school forums. "Oh, this is probably way not appropriate to be reading on my dads work computer."
I was reading the forums before, but I'm not sure if I had an account on the previous incarnation.
