That was really fun. I’m hoping Disney doesn’t make home theaters wait 75 days for Eternals tho.

I just finished too. It was exactly what I wanted - a bunch of kung/wire fu action on a Marvel budget with a bunch of laughs. Xialing was a badass (great but obvious ending there) and Katy was awesome. And the critters were so cute!

I don't think I stopped smiling after the first couple minutes started.

Saw Eternals for the second time and I've got a few niggling observations.
The dates being used aren't lining up with real-world history very well. For instance, 5000 BCE in Mesopotamia would have been midway through the Ubaid period. Walled cities would have been a thing already invented at that point. In fact, Ur and Eridu, two of the oldest known cities of humankind were on their third or fourth iteration at that point. While finding a random tribe barely out of the paleolithic wouldn't have been impossible, those would have been the exception and not the rule. It would have been far more likely to find a trade caravan carrying stone, spices, salt, and obsidian for local goods and pottery. Cities were a thing, proto-agriculture was a thing, water buffalo drawn plows were a thing and so was tracking the floods for crop management. Floods are especially interesting since the area where later iterations of Ur was founded was considered to be among the sites where the biblical flood story was said to have been originated. So maybe the old testament flood was a real event in the MCU? This timeline is full of confusing and contradicting events. The 500 BCE Babylon stuff is especially confusing. Plows had been a thing for millennia. Also, that time period was full of uprisings and wars as that was when Persian empire went on an expansion spree with Babylon being a prize for the various warring factions. Which means the city wouldn't have been that peaceful and a center of activity for one empire or another, though usually it would have been the Persians but they wouldn't have been the only ones.

Now look, I get it, it's not the real world. It's a movie and they can do what they want to. However!
However, it plays into their own group history. Sersi says she was with Ikaris for nearly five thousand years but we only see them getting married in 400 CE. Yes, you could say they were together since Babylon when Ikaris was told to get off his duff and tell her how he feels but counting that still means they were together for far less time than five thousand years. That seems like a weird goof to make, right? And trying to count it from the start of their mission would have been seven thousand years which all of the Eternals keep talking about being on Earth for that long. Which again, doesn't really seem quite right given the above and how Sprite let it slip that Ikaris got distant and flew off only in the early 20th century. Right before or after the first world war when he was supposed to have known about the true mission since Babylon. These dates aren't adding up very well.

All opinions are my own and in no way reflect that of my employer.

If there is one thing I would never expect a comic hero movie to get right, it's having modern, up-to-date knowledge of the ancient history of civilization. I wouldn't even expect a moderately accurate representation of what was taught even a generation ago. It's material that would be incredibly esoteric to the incredibly overwhelming majority of the population, not to mention it's MCU Earth History and not History history so they only need to resemble what most people think of those times.

Though maybe if those ancient assholes had thought to start writing shit down a little earlier, we'd have a reasonably accurate idea of more than 3-5% of the two hundred thousand year history of modern humanity.

Lots of people watching Shang Chi for the first time on Disney and I'm one of them and I also loooooooved it.

I hope there's lots more of that in the future! I want more fantasy Kung Fu solo movies and I want Shang Chi to pop up in other Marvel movies being awesome and helping punch out aliens or robots or whatever.

    Eternals question
So is the idea that every planet that supports sentient life is a Celestial egg? Because Tiamut was going to emerge well before humans ever became an interstellar species. But there are all sorts of intelligent spacefaring races in GotG who presumably were able to reach a population of 8 billion without their origin planet being consumed. Celestial birth exterminating all sentient life seems like an extinction level threat to the universe.

    Celestials
they are only born so often, I'm assuming thousands if not way more apart. Celestials provide the makeup of the universe, so when one dies another must be born or it'll run out of... Something. Whatever that Celestial produced. This i what I got from it anyways, not sure if 100% accurate. Basically most planets don't ever hit enough populace to actually generate one, and I'm assuming they're aren't happening all the time because of how difficult it is to achieve/maybe one doesn't "need" to be born yet. We don't know what Tiamut was gonna do, but assuming it's not up there generating "the universe" in some way it could cause problems..

Wait my god is this yet Another multiverse setup??

I think every world that could have a Celestial seed requires/develops sentient life, but sentient life can and does exist on worlds without seeds as well.

    its funny because
they could have had almost all the same beats with the characters with the little mini demon thingies and as someone else mentioned have the big bad inhabit dad and the dragon inhabit Shang Chi. Let it be a final kung fu of good vs evil instead of giant cgi fest. It also probably would have made it easier to see the influence of the mother.
    overall still an A movie.

I watched Shang Chi last night as well, and I agree with what pretty much everyone else is saying. It was freaking awesome! And I also agree that it would've been better without the full CGI battle at the end.

I do have a question about the mid-credits scene.

I mean if we follow the whole banner/hulk as a well adjusted individual development there's no reason he'd need to be hulked out all the time; it's probably pretty convenient not to be hulk for purpose of like, walking through doors (also he wouldn't be ruining clothes all the time)

    also (shang-chi)
I appreciated that there's like, sort of a support group situation for new super-people going on; like bring the new guys in and give'em a an orientation and a couple emergency numbers

also I actually kinda appreciated that at the end of shang-chi the monster they spent all this time building up actually was just a terrifying monster, though it did seem like there shoulda been more of a kung-fu fight scene at the climax

So let me talk about superhero fatigue. Spoilers for Falcon and the Winter Soldier (and Endgame I guess).
Falcon and the Winter Soldier ends up with the Falcon becoming Captain America. Since he ends Endgame with the shield, when he shows up again in another movie as Captain America, it's a logical through-line. That makes the FatWS show extra flavor, and not really necessary viewing (yet).

But one of the most common complaints I saw about Endgame was how all the Professor Hulk happened off screen. Now imagine that all happened in a TV show (or maybe the reverse like you hint at). When people end one movie and start another in drastically different places, then it makes that TV/Disney+ series feel like it's a more required viewing. It all depends on how dramatic the changes and how well the next movie explains things.

Basically, everyone's tolerance on movie and TV show integration is different. But I think I may be reaching my limit.

    I understand your point but....eh.

Hulk has gotten pretty short shrift on all of his storylines. Some of this was the fucked up distribution rights for him and some of it being simple hulk stories are kind of trash for big movies. Hulk books, when they're good, have always been about internal struggles and identity and a bunch of other things that are hard to wrap up in 118 minutes. Hulk stories are a much better fit for this limited series sort of thing they've got going. It sort of sucks he's still not gonna have his own series but he's a pretty natural fit in She-Hulk.

The MCU movies already have a kind of absurd time commitment if you want to understand all the cross references. It is when those references become a hindrance to the main story that we start to have an issue. Obviously we may be approaching that level for you, it isn't there yet for me. Though I am enjoying all the Disney+ stuff so far so I may not be the market segment that is going to suffer for this.

Not sure if it's been officially said but my take
looked like Abomination was going back to The Raft or a similar facility. If he's under Ross' control still that's where he'd be anyways. I assume Wong busted him out so they could split the winnings, and then brought him back so Ross didn't freak the fuck out. So I assume Abom never died, just got royally rocked by Hulk in TIH, and Wong figured he was wasting his talents in a cell waiting for orders

    Abomination
was never killed, that was sort of a "this is as far as I will go" thing for Hulk even when raging it up. He stops before finishing Abomination off, then leaves the mess to the person who created it: Ross.

As for why the two left together, it could very well be a rehabilitation thing for Abomination. You've got somebody Hulk-strong and Hulk-tough with a bad attitude and what're you going to do with him? Keep him in prison and hope he can of old age? Or try to make him at least moderately less murdery?

I had no idea that Emil was Abomination, I just always remembered him as Blonsky.

Also regarding Shang’chi, I mostly enjoyed the movie, but wasn’t a fan of how they presented the power from the 10 rings
as being projectiles with boomerang capability.

I guess I was hoping for more of an elemental mastery / magic vibes, with some bonus augmentations for the wearer

As they left it I’m not sure if the immortality was from the rings or something else inherent to Shang chi’s father.

magic from the rings, I believe. Implication being he took them off and was happy to age and die with his family.

And now Shang-Chi has em, he can inherit the "Immortal" title because there certainly aren't any other MCU martial artists using it.
