Is Clash at Demonhead a Metroidvania? Tons of power ups and backtracking to get through it, even if it has distinct levels.

Are you saying that it's the Black Sheep of Metroidvanias?

I might suggest rogue legacy instead of dead cells, but mostly because you can feel the SotN influences more clearly.

I'd put those in over Dead Cells. Don't get me wrong, loved Dead Cells, but is not a metroidvania. It's a roguelike action platformer.

rogue legacy isn't a metroidvania in any sense. I'm pretty sure the entire map and most of the bosses are accessible as soon as you walk in the door. I feel like Returnal might skirt the edge of the genre though.

Returnal is such a cool game.

    It’s also HARD AS FUCK

Also, if you want to get TECHNICAL…any game with randomly generated content isn’t really a Metroidvania.

Metroidvanias should have a large, static, interconnected map with areas locked by the acquisition of new items.

But I don’t want to be technical!

This is like the "is a hot dog a sandwich" argument, but worse

FWIW I think backtracking of some sort is a hard and fast requirement, which Dead Cells fails (even if you traverse the same biomes over and over, the maps are always different on subsequent runs)

I played about half of it on switch and I don’t know if it’s because there’s been patches but it was not unplayable. It didn’t run flawlessly, but it wasn’t unplayability that kept me from finishing, it was the grind aspects.

Capcom doesn't include it in much of their big sales, so it's not surprising it's forgotten.

My dumb, unpopular opinion is that I hate the name Metroidvania, because Metroid did it first and the castlevania was just a dumb platformer that fucking copied Metroid and suddenly they are mentioned with the cool kid for some reason. And I am annoyed by this.

This is not the popular I am well aware, you don’t have to agree with me, but you have to know my opinion.

Anyway zonagul, as someone mentioned, Arkham Asylum is 100% an A tier list for this genre, if your list does not have it, it is a poor list.

I think I am going to draw a line in the sand, for myself, and say that a game needs to be 2D, otherwise we open up the door to too many adventure games and any attempt at genre definition drowns.

Symphony added a ton of things Metroid did not have, like level ups and equipment builds, these things are very popular in the genre. So imo, your opinion isn't super well considered in this case.

Metroid did the backtracking and interconnected maps.

SOTN did the leveling and equipment system but borrowed the rest from Metroid.

But, as it tends to happen, the genre of Metroidvania has branched out a lot from where it started so you see games that don’t necessarily fit into this exact archetype being called Metroidvania.

It’s just been evolving that’s all!

No you see, you’re wrong. You don’t need that stuff at all.

Now shut up and let me play Arkham asylum which clearly has a leveling system built into it.

I'm okay with the Metroidvania name since Metroid is first billing and it's referring to all the Castlevania games that follow the Metroid formula (and there are a lot of them)

I'm sure there's a better name for the genre overall but I doubt we'll ever all reach a common consensus on it, much like we can't agree on what makes a game fit the formula fully

    In short, drink your ovaltine

i played it shortly after it came out on switch and the only performance issues i noticed were sometimes it chugged a little when going between certain rooms but i think it had already been patched at least once by then
