It seems difficult to accept the idea that inflation is truly being caused by supply crunch when company after company just, coincidentally, crows about their record high profits, and further buy each other out and consolidate market control into themselves. Coincidentally.

Surely it’s not a symptom of a cancerous level of oligopoly, where the top players can demand whatever price they want and distort the market accordingly

"The economy" did fucking gangbusters throughout the pandemic, even as there was no end of hardships suffered by the average American despite reluctant and inadequate assistance provided by the government - and indeed perhaps because of the massively larger assistance provided to businesses by the government, only for those businesses to take those assistance funds intended to help keep people employed and just... firing masses of people in order to post record profits!

To continue to accept what's talked about the economy as though what the stock market does is directly reflected in the daily living conditions of the average worker after all this... you've got to have been browbeaten into resignation over it, or you've deluded yourself into the belief that they're in charge so they must know best.

There really ought to be a mechanism of "you have repaid the amount you borrowed X times, the rest of the debt is forgiven." If I borrow $10, repay $100, and still owe $50, I feel like the lender got a pretty good deal out of it and the rest of the debt can bugger off.

Famously a ok in the bible! Somehow I don’t think forgiving all debts and no moneylending will be high on the list of priorities for the Christian nationalists when they take over tho

They had a Trump statue at a CPAC sometime in the last few years that was literally made of gold. They know exactly what they worship

So I consolidated my student loans like 15 years ago

Today, I called my student loan manager? Nelnet and asked if my loans were eligible for forgiveness.

I wanted to get my payments since 2020 refunded

Nelnet says my loans aren't eligible for forgiveness

    Fuck

Yeah, I am going to investigate further, but I don't really understand who else to talk with

    Student aid . Gov

Doesn't have much information, and the help line doesn't either.

So you want Direct type federal loans, if you consolidated in that time frame they may not be Direct.

All the announcements so far have left out everyone who has not consolidated or gotten a loan since 2010

if you think you might qualify for the PFSA repayment via the waiver the best time to consolidate is now because they'll be eligible for that

but so far nothing has been done for folks with FFEL program loans

Politicians - even Democratic politicians of large, majority Democratic areas - have been very eager to get rid of mask mandates because once you get rid of them it's effectively impossible to ever get them back -

and what they want you to know is that they're never, EVER going to provide even the meagre response we got in 2020 again - not for COVID, not for other pandemics, not for natural disasters. Help is not going to come.

Because people got a tiny glimpse of what could be done if we honestly wanted the government to do something other than grind people down into dust and keep the money numbers going up, and people liked those things and they wanted those things

And they want to make it very clear to us that they will let every one of us die before they provide help on that scale again

I think you can get a refund for payments you made after the pandemic forbearance started, up to the 10k/20k, but if you paid it off before the pandemic forbearance began you're out of luck

it's not pandemic-related, but we're broke as per usual, and I posted on Facebook to try to drum up some cash or amazon gifts of things we could really use like waterproof boots, and one of my old friends messaged me to ask what my rent amount is out of curiosity, and when I told him 1425 a month he said "oh wow that's quite expensive"

he lives in TORONTO! are you kidding me?? I don't know how to bridge the gap between people who were financially stable enough to buy a house 15 years ago and the people who are still renting now, like, I just... don't know how to make people who were able to buy a house understand that us renters are really out here just getting proper fucked by inflation and increasing rents with no checks and balances and stagnating wages and a whole entire plague. and let's be honest, for the Portland suburbs - but certainly for Toronto! - $1425 a month for a one bedroom is actually, unfortunately, a good deal!

I had given up hope long ago after first seeing my student loan debt

Just in time that conceivably one of my two loans might actually be fully paid off if this sign-up sheet from the government ever goes online so I can fucking fill it, my dad needed emergency heart surgery and is in the middle of a weeks-long ICU stay a state away. If/When he makes it through, I can already tell seeing the bill will put me in his spot next. So I'm still screwed and hopeless and severely depressed either way

I had a whole plan, a whole PSLF plan with getting a Master's degree in social work, doing the requisite few years of state work to get established and get good healthcare for the rest of my life before moving into other areas of work, and then my body tried to kill me in 2016 and the ongoing clusterfuck of medical stuff just laughed and laughed at my long term plans and now we're two years into a pandemic that means even if I felt able to carry a job, I'd have to literally risk my life every time I went to work, so ha ha fuck me

anyway Sweeney hope your dad is doing as okay as he can be, don't forget that med bills are negotiable usually and they may have a financial assist program through the hospital if you call them... they can also help with things like free parking passes so you aren't spending $20+ a day to park when/if you visit

Was the administraion seriously that unprepared for the entirely predictable push-back they'd receive from the student loan industry? Just give up immediately without a fight at the first sign of a challenge? That's the plan?

The Democrats' reputation for being controlled opposition is entirely earned.
