Harley Quinn is a much bigger name than Poison Ivy at this stage. Hell, you could make an argument she is a bigger name than Joker. She is a bigger name than all but three DC heroes when it comes down to making money.

That said I feel like Harley is too big a name for Suicide Squad because of that as well so I can't say I disagree over all. Just that currently that isn't what seems to be guiding their character choices.

Yeah, and you know she's not going to die in the movie. you have to build characters around her that can be unceremoniously offed.

edit: I'm just much more interested in James Gunn going "i'm going to make you care about Polka-dot Man" than the thousandth version of Poison Ivy.

Gunn claims he could have killed her. He only took the gig because they let him kill anyone in it. He also said Robbie would have killed him for doing it. How true it is I couldn't say.

Edit: Just to be perfectly clear as well I also much prefer that version. Obscure cannon fodder is the heart and soul of the concept of the Suicide Squad. It's just seems they want some big names to headline as well.

i dunno, i think there's a lot to explore with poison ivy considering, uh, we're accelerating the death of our planet

this movie addresses that the usa is the villain, i think we could get a pretty good movie out of "poison ivy saves the amazon by destroying Amazon"

I could see it if Poison Ivy was the villain that Waller sends the squad in to off, but they flip sides cause wait, Ivy's got a point here.

She’s just Harley’s girlfriend. No explanation. Harley must complete the mission and meet her at an Eco rally, the fate of their relationship depends upon it!

I think having poison ivy as the initial target would be great, I just don't think she's a good fit for the team at first.

About the political stuff downstairs [in Grieves’ lab], you can see at the end of the movie, there’s a shot with where Amanda Waller is looking at all the footage they have that Bloodsport has sent them [of the Starro experiments], and one of the pieces of the footage is the old president of Corto Maltese and Ronald Reagan together. That used to be a little bit more prominent. I pulled it out simply because it seemed to be unnecessarily distracting to the central story.

Okay now THAT I wish he'd kept, that's a very good joke

They want to make Peacemaker semi-redeemable for the TV show they're doing.

I hope the Peacemaker show is a full-on Charlton/Pax Americana/Watchmen style jawn, tbh

Give me The Question, give me Sarge Steel, give me Blue Beetle II

(DC does not own the rights to Pete Cannon, Thunderbolt, so just put full-on Ozymandias in his spot, since they seem to insist he's a DC character anyway)

It is a quickdraw situation. He fires at her then Bloodsport gets the drop on him.

Peacemaker is a collosal douche but he's not pure monster. He didn't want to kill ratcatcher 2. It took some squaring in whatever his moral code to shoot an unarmed girl. Bloodsport, now there was a target he could fool good about shooting

He's pretty close to pure monster! They made sure to give him a valid out to complete the mission and he deliberately decides it's not good enough.

I think maybe my favorite thing in the movie that sums it up is when Boomer smiles weakly at Harley before he dies, as if to say "I was born a fucked up person in a fucked up world and this is the fucked up way I'm leaving it. Sorry babe."

They give peacemaker the option to just take the disc and scarper, he decides to start killing people.

Having just watched the scene, the impression I got was originally he had no intention of killing but then once he killed Flagg those intentions changed

I'm pretty sure Peacemaker was of the mind of "no witnessess." While Ratcatcher is a disgrace bank robber who hangs around rats, there might be too many connections between Project Starfish and the US to cover up if people start actively looking for them.

She is a prisoner and escaping the mission will naturally involve going back to prison. She's also a criminal and an immigrant, not exactly prime material to be a source where the proof will end up being "Trust me, bro" without the hard drive. Peacemaker had all the leeway in the world to NOT kill her. If it was a problem, he could even force Waller's hand and make her do it (Waller would not hesitate). Ultimately, he wanted to do it.

  • Undead ScottsmanUndead Scottsman Registered User regular

I mean, he was trying to make a case with Flag until the guy refused to go along with it. Then he just went all 'murder em all and let God sort em out' mode.

Ratcatcher II explicitly tells him he can just take the data disc and leave and he's like "Naw"

Peacemaker wanted to kill her, and would have if Bloodsport didn't show up

He got nailed right at the beginning by Bloodsport, he does the things he wants to do and uses Freedom as an excuse

That wildly does not seem like the read I got off the movie

Rat-catcher 2 asking him why he's going to kill her explicitly felt like a callback to the beginning of the mission to me, where they're talking about dicks on the beach and Bloodsport says he does what he wants to do

Regardless of his answer, it felt like them saying "He's doing this because it's what he wants to do"

  • shoeboxjeddyshoeboxjeddy Registered User regular
Peacemaker can both be a sadistic, selfish individual AND have undergone traumatic conditioning as a child to become that way. I don't see a contradiction.

i think explicitly saying "he's not an evil person, he's just a bad guy" directly goes against how i feel about the character tho

I think (I could be wrong) what he's trying to say is that Peacemaker has a functional moral compass, yet he chooses to do acts that he understands to be morally wrong anyway. Which is how I saw him in the movie. If he was a psychopath, killing Rick would have meant nothing or been pleasant for him, similarly he wouldn't have blinked at killing Ratcatcher 2.
