i'm pretty convinced at this point nothing does more to recruit people to the alt-right than the twitter left

    This is a nonsense take

Yes, absolutely, no one reasonable goes, "Okay, FINE, I'm going to start supporting GENOCIDE because lefties were mean to me!"

If they say that, then they already wanted to support it and were just keeping their opinions to themselves.

This is a strawman of what the (alt) right recruitment process looks like, though. I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to say that the (extremely online) left tends to assume that people already share their worldview, while the (extremely online) right start from a place of subtlety and slowly ramp things up over time.

It's not "people were mean to me, therefore TIME FOR MURDER", it's, wow, some people were dicks to me, but these other guys say they support free speech. That sounds cool and oh look seventeen steps later you want to kick out all immigrants.

Nah, horseshit. No one is at risk of radicalization because of mean leftists. Social isolation, poverty, victimization by employers, or cops, or authority in general sets that up. You're telling me that the Incel movement wouldn't be able to recruit as many white men if people were just nicer to white men?

If you want to reduce my point down to that, then yes, I am. I think you're underplaying just how subtle the beginning of online radicalization can be.

I'm also not trying to make any point along the lines of "the woke left is bad, actually", but I fundamentally think that the online right - obviously taken as a diverse collection of people without too many unifying strands - is broadly better at recruiting people to their cause and that's an issue.

I agree with you there, but the original statement was that the Twitter left was recruiting people TO the alt-right, which is, as Atomika said, nonsense. Your point, that the alt-right is better at recruitment than the nebulous left, well sure, but that's an entirely different point.

There is such a thing as ideological reaction, but I think that at the macro-level which is relevant to national political trends it's driven less by individual firebrands/jerks using their own voices and more by their getting nutpicked by opposition media, influencers, politicians etc. who want a villain figure to put on display and firm up their wishy-washy followers' convictions

Also this goes both ways; I read a lefty blog which is all in on finding the craziest thing a conservative did today, every day, and they all think that way dontcha know?

I feel like there’s a disproportionate amount of fearmongering among the right and the center-left about the more radical left being alienating, especially when considering how pervasive extreme right-wing views are.

There is no single city in America, let alone county or state, under the yoke of left-wing extremists. Contrast that with about 85% of the geography being under the boot of right-wing fascist authoritarianism.

But let’s wring our hands over zealous Twitter kids wanting the media to do better? I don’t get what we’re even talking about here. This is some “It is the Children Who Are Wrong” malarkey.

i mean it's kinda funny that you ignore how influential can be when less than a single page ago someone pointed out that you acted in a shitty, condescending way towards a huge swathe of people and your response amounted to "i'm right, they suck, sorry you got offended" and then told a bunch of people they're wrong

could it be that you have the blinders on a bit here?

    My apology was sincere, Tav

if that was your takeaway from my post, then i was absolutely right about the blinders

I’m not going to apologize over calling the Midwest shitty

If the entire region is that upset about it maybe they can stop electing fascists and import a non-ranch dressing based culture

i didn't ask you to apologise

i'm just saying that maybe you're blind to something happening because you act in the same way

but considering your immediate reaction was to ignore my point, absolve yourself and then double down, it's abundantly clear that your mind is made up

    which is fine

This really comes off like both-sidesing the argument, though

Or pointing out that it’s hypocritical to be critical of society as I, too, live in a society

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m more than capable of being a pigheaded jerk

oh i'm not both-sidesing it, it's an exclusively left problem

the right is spectacular at recruitment and manipulation and making people feel like everything wrong in their life is someone else's fault

if you think the left being judgemental doesn't drive people right, i'd recommend hanging around some open mics and asking people about free speech

Speaking of music theory: looks like no guitar lessons until at least the end of the year. Urgh. I really don't know what to do to get past this starting hump. I still can't DO anything on it because I don't even know what I should be practicing. The Fender App got really frustrating because I can't ask any questions.

I'm thinking of buying Rick Beato's guitar course, but now I'm gunshy about spending money since everything like that will have that same problem that I can't ask questions.

"joined a fascist death cult" is just "I voted for the other major political party" (which is kind of shocking in both it's accuracy and it's heavy lifting, but if the margins are that close then maybe we need to be more careful with how broad of a brush we use)

It's really important to keep in mind that a lot of people are "liberal" in the way "nice guys" are nice.

I’ve mostly run across this in Democrats over 50, with the prevalence escalating with age, and that’s for dang sure not who is blowing up leftist Twitter

I see it with young people all the time. They're very loud on being against the bigotry du jour and then are monstrous bigots against any category nobody wrote a music video about yet.

I have literally never seen this even once

I feel like I’m living in a very different reality than many of you

Generally the way the express their bigotry is in how they choose their targets.

A white gamer guy has a "gamer moment" and they'll throw an angry tweet on the pile with everyone else.
A woman says something that if you squint right and ignore the context is somewhat racist, its time for a 24/7 crusade.

That’s not leftist Twitter, that’s misogynist Twitter

The least true of all the scotsmen.

I don't think the left has managed to purge its misogyny, and it shows.

Wanna elaborate on the last part? I’m genuinely interested.

edit: and I’m not sure if I do believe the left drives people rightward in any statistically-meaningful sense that weren’t already disposed to that inclination to being with

I almost refuse to believe a “Someone said white guys are problematic so I joined a fascist death cult” pipeline is a real thing

It's more like "I keep hearing I have four strikes against me since i'm white, straight, cis, and from the Midwest"

"joined a fascist death cult" is just "I voted for the other major political party"

The other party is a fascist death cult though, so fuck ‘em and their fragile egos
