Finally beat Terranigma last night. I had put it down back in 2018 after getting stuck, decided to pick it up again a few days ago. Needed a couple quick FAQ look-ups to get my bearings and then was able to complete it with a couple extra FAQ hints. Definitely not a game you put down for 3 years and come back to easily (the game was clearly developed with you remembering or taking notes about certain details). I rarely play jrpgs, but it was interesting. Probably worth a go.

Did this game get a new fan patch or something recently? I've noticed quite a few twitch streamers I follow playing it as well.

I played a chunk of a friend's copy of the first Xenosaga on the PS2 a while after it released and I really liked it. I have always wanted to play through the entire trilogy, but they're each like 50 hour RPGs so its one hell of a time commitment.

I just like how Analogue takes your money and promises they will make it.

That, if anything, is the biggest reason why I didn't support the product. If I could have reserved, put down a small, but reasonable deposit, and then be charged for the whole thing when it ships, I would have ordered one.

But if they were taking the full amount of money, and then telling me I might get it at some point two years from now.... yeah.... not happening.

Definitely put it on a credit card. Yeah. The deal is kinda flakey. Places like Best Buy and Amazon don't charge until it ships.

Places like Best Buy are retailers and not a small company making a very expensive handheld in small batches. There's absolutely nothing flakey about it and this is par for the course for absolutely any smaller niche company that makes products like this.

It's a shame some of yall missed out on the Pocket because it's literally the greatest handheld that's ever been made. That isn't even a question to me anymore after having this thing for about a month now. Oh well maybe next year.

There are a billion “best games” lists around the internet for the GBC and GBA, GBA especially. They’re a really good place to start, and will generally be the consensus.

    Some general things:

    Final Fantasty Tactics Advance
    Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
    Advance Wars 1 and 2
    The Metroid games, previously mentioned
    Sonic advance games
    Legend of Zelda Minish cap
    Golden Sun
    Drill Dozer
    Mario Golf Advance

Those are just the games I can pull off the top of my head. I easily put hundreds of hours into the advance wars games alone, with another 60+ on Final Fantasy Tactics

for GBC, I know that library a bit less well, part of my renewed interest in retro handhelds/gaming is that I’m going to go back to the GBC library. I only had a few GBC specific games when I was a kid.

A few things to add to that list:

    Tactics Ogre
    Castlevania:harmony of dissonance
    Castlevania:aria of sorrow
    Megaman zero 1-4
    Fire emblem
    Fire emblem: sacred stones
    Golden sun 2
    Pokemon emerald
Harvest moon friends of mineral town
    Final fantasy 4-6

You can find some englished patched repros of Mother 3 and fire emblem 6, don’t know if they would work or not but those are probably the only japan only ones to bother with if they do.

    GBC:

    Zelda: Links awakening DX
    Zelda:oracle of ages
    Zelda: oracle of seasons
    Dragon warrior 3

I have one of those red cartridge English repros of Mother 3 and they work fantastic, surprisingly enough. Most of them don't have the latest fan translation patch but they still do everything you need them to do, are decently enough made, and haven't failed on me yet.

Edit: also that list posted above will cost well over $1000 if you buy the carts outright. When I saw those Castlevania's at my local retro store they were both well over $100 apiece for loose carts, one of which was in awful shape.

I bought my son a repro of Alien Hominid (similarly crazy expensive) and it works great. I know that it's a shady market, but I bought it in a color just so if anyone ever comes across it, it will clearly be a repro and never pass as the real thing by mistake.

He actually just bought the Cube version last week - it's in his top 10 games I'd say, but it took a while to actually pay the $80ish it goes for now.

As long as they are clearly marked and effort is put into them, and it's not something currently being produced I don't see a problem with it. In fact I think it's neccesary for retro gaming to continue into the future intact.

Agree, especially with how stupid expensive some retro games are now.

Nobody should have to be paying some of these prices just to enjoy a video game.

The retro market going absolutely bonkers is the reason why I felt zero remorse pirating my copy of Dragon Quest IX. I would have gladly paid for a legitimate copy at a reasonable price, but that was impossible.

The annoying thing about the handheld Nintendo consoles is that the cartridges are so small. You have to be careful not to loose them. I need to find a case for my old GBA games.

Just put them in a plastic freezer bag and then put that in a safe location. No need to be precious about it.

It's brutal and on top of that, we've seen local shops falling more and more for repros as tradeins. We let one place know they had taken in four fake Pokemon games - fortunately they pulled them right off the shelf.
You could see the micro SD slots on the DS carts!

I put them in a little plastic tray. I got my GB games in ziploc bags. I don't have a huge amount of GB games.

I got my loose Switch, 3DS, and DS games in small cases.

It is kind of funny how it started out on the Game Boy. The game kind of evolved with the hardware.

Capcom is such a great company. Their Ghost n' Goblins games and Maximo have so much atmosphere to them.

I remember loving playing that Gargoyle GB game long ago. Didn't realize they made more of them till just now. I really should dig up my GB and look at the games I kept/still have.

My best GameBoy memory is getting a few games for free from Good Guys (a somewhat local Electronics store like Best Buy) long ago when they had their 150% price match guarantee. Another store had a crazy deal for some games and I noticed that the guarantee would make it such that the Good Guys would technically have to pay me to take the games. So I convinced my mom to drive us over there and I walked up to their Customer Service to get our free games. The person working there laughed so hard that they actually gave us the games for free and the difference in cash after they had to get the Store Manager to authorize the price match since it actually caused an error in the system. Can't remember the games I and my brother got for free except that I didn't take the Snoopy Game since I didn't care for it and didn't want to be that greedy.

Is PS2 retro enough? I hope so because I am going to talk about it. I just recently played through Disgaea 1 and experienced a fair bit of nostalgia whiplash. I used a cheat to level faster to bypass the grind, and finished the game in less then 13 hours. Compared to the 300 hours I put into it originally that is a stark difference. The actual dialogue and plot held up, it was funny and sincere just like I remembered. The fact that the vast majority of the game play is just mindless grind really hurts how well the whole package holds up. I will admit I never played any of them beyond this one, something I am aiming to rectify. The various systems of the game, item world, specialist, transmigration, are all pretty neat, but just add increasing layers of grind. Overall pretty disappointed. I am going to start the second one sometime this week and I hope it holds up better but I have my doubts.

IIRC the GBA game let you change your shooting style on the fly as opposed to selecting it when you start the game.

I think the switch has somehow spoiled me. Went back to play DQ8 on 3ds. Just cannot do it. Same thing with xenoblade. My brain just rejects low res blurry 3d now.

Yet on the other hand, I can play any random sprite based 2d snes game blown up to pixelly on a 60 inch tv no problem. Hybrid games like ds dragon quests don’t bother me either.

My only real complaint about Gunstar Super Heroes is that the endings are tied to the difficulty. You only get the best ending if you beat the game on the hardest difficulty.
