Exquisite Evolution 2: Evolve Harder

Endless_SerpentsEndless_Serpents Registered User regular
Here are three creatures:

siiwichdtp9f.jpeg

They must evolve to survive the harsh and ever changing conditions of their environment.

In time their descendants will branch off into different species, predators and prey, ones that swim, fly, burrow… but right now they share a shallow primordial pool.

You can tell me what you want to see them become next, or take it upon yourself to evolve one down your own path. Anyone can add a new feature, evolving your design further and further away from your intentions. Try to be incremental with your evolutions.

After a few pages I’ll make a big family tree, so we can look at where we started and what we end up with.

Amongst the spiky population, mating preferences begin to favor ornamental spike traits. Maintenance of gaudy spike plumes is seen as evidence of strong fitness.

Curiously, this species has a very distinct call:

While primarily used for display, this behaviour certainly makes this resident of the pool difficult to eat.

The swimming species, finding itself in a very competitive environment, evolves the ability to launch venomous darts at predators as a deterrence mechanism.

Here we see our first clear divergence of interests among the blue creatures.

One favours sturdiness of legs. With this they maintain their footing regardless of the currents effecting their home.

The extra energy required to produce and fire venomous darts has causes the swimming residents to become predators themselves, subduing and devouring other swimming creatures.

The ostentatious spine displays, that had previously been purely ornamental, expand to serve as a useful defense against the onslaught of venomous darts. These defensive plumages are so effective that a population of the swimming creatures evolves a broad, shovel-like snout to effectively dislodge the spine creatures from the sea floor at the cost of swimming speed.

This aquatic speedster has been slowed somewhat by the addition of a shovel-like snout, but it’s not polite to mention it.

This shrub like creature, now with a degree of muscular control over the spines it collects, isn’t taking any shit.

Truly, this blue being will stand the test of time. They emerge from the primordial pool and head east, because they are too cool for the others.

Some of the large-footed blue things have begun to evolve their feet into wide, flat flippers. They have also grown whiskers to better sense danger in the shallow pools they swim in.

A mutualist relationship emerges between the spiny creatures and the leggy blues, who wear the spiny creatures like a hat. The blues derive defense and the spinies benefit from the anchoring stability.

The finned creature expands onto land in an unusual way, it's snout becoming a drill-like organ, allowing it to "swim" through the dirt.

The spiked organism, freed from having to devote calories to movement or finding food, evolves enormous intelligence and within a few generations fully subsumes the consciousness of the blue organisms.

It what is the most dramatic evolutionary shake up so far, the drillers take centre stage during this epoch, as the apex ambush predator. Still, their distinctive call continues:

The voxel pyramids, exposed to strong winds, begin to smoothen out their stepped sides. Their bodies elongate slightly, and vertical rows of raised bumps emerge from their flanks.

You have done this, someone might say angrily, you have played a part in oppressing an entire population. Naturally, evolution does not care for morality.

It's like a pixel, but in three dimensions (it has "volume" so it's a voxel.)

Perhaps a mating ornament, or as a deterrent to parasites, these blue flipper creatures have further distanced themselves from the working class.
