My mom is getting tested because she got the j&j jab early this year but hasn't made time to get boosted yet and we're supposed to go to family Christmas thing tomorrow night.
Dyshow am I even using this gunRegistered Userregular
Haven't had a chance to get my booster yet, and tomorrow is the big family holiday party wherein I know I have a couple knucklehead uncles that aren't vaccinated.
Here's hoping that it's as much of a dud as it was last year, but who knows.
Also lots of super robust data that 3, and even 2 doses of vaccine is still very effective at preventing serious illness from Omicron. Hospitalizations in unvaccinated people are more that 1200% higher just in my province.

I also wanna thank @3cl1ps3 for pointing me toward Chise. Their twitter has been very calming and it's so nice to have a place that just lists data without sensationalism.
I have my booster scheduled for Thursday, but I started feeling not-great last night. I'm hoping the testing line that I'm currently standing in will be a giant waste of time and money.
Rapid testing isn't covered by my insurance / work but I'm scheduled to be back at work tomorrow and I really don't want to take any chances.
Listening to some guy bitch about how long this is taking isn't helping. Like, dude, this is a process and we're at one of the few sites open on Sunday, chill.
I think its more like: the majority will get minor symptoms, but people will still die from this or have horrible complications
Yeah, effectively the mild reporting is applicable to many on the individual level (but not really comforting to immunocompromised, elderly, or unvaxxed youth), but on the societal level it is still a bad enough deal that it is gonna be an adventure for most places not introducing strong restrictions to reduce the rate of spread
The biggest problems being mass absence and burnout in our hospitals causing drastic reduction in care, but also absences from workplaces causing some extreme weirdness societally soon too
Things might improve by March but we're in for a hell of a winter

South Africa's data should give most folks some comfort, though I'm not advocating abandoning restrictions in spread.
Only 30% of the population was vaccinated, Omicron brought incredibly higher case numbers than Delta across all ages and immune responses, but not anywhere near a corresponding spike in hospitalizations. More people got Covid, but more people didn't get sick. It also peaked within 4 weeks and faded after 2 more weeks.

If (and this is a large ass if) this is the case that gets backed up by further data analysis, then that is good news indeed.

I am still mildly stressed that my under five daughter may catch it, as you know statistics show average and not individual responses.
My whole house got hit with covid this last week (presumably omicron)
Out of the 3 double vaxed adults: 1 mostly asymptomatic. 2 with feverish symptoms and very low energy for a couple days, followed by improving but ongoing cold symptoms
For the 6 and 8 years old, single vaxed: sick mostly for 1 day, low energy chills and some vomiting, then mostly better the next day
I should mention a local issue as well that happened over the holidays - basically, if you have animals that might require veterinary care, try to prepare as best you can in case you don't have access to usual service
Around the end of December, 2 out of 3 of the emergency vet clinics in town had to close due to active covid cases, which meant that people with vet emergencies had to consider driving to Kingston or Montreal (both 2 hours away)
Kind of scary when you have two senior dogs who have active health concerns (though at least mid-winter there are no bees for the younger dog to bite and inflate her nose three sizes like Ivy did two years back...)

South Africa had 230,000 excess deaths and basically no control over viral spread during its prior three waves. Between all those deaths and the comparatively younger population, it's possible that in South Africa all the people who were likely to die from COVID have already died off.
I'm waiting until everything has somehow completely blown over to relax because rosy projections have continuously betrayed us these last two years.
from what I've heard omnicron is very contagious, but about the worst you get is a bad sore throat which isn't going to kill anyone
The rapidly rising patient numbers and rising frustration in the ICUs my wife works in would seem to indicate otherwise.
And now things have gotten bad enough in one ICU that my wife is going in at 6:30pm on her day off to relieve the doctor on call for tonight because he sounded like he was getting close to another breakdown (this happened once before when things were at their worst in 2020).
Her last day in that ICU was last Sunday. One of the patients who's been there that entire time is dying and there's nothing they can do about it. My wife remembers him because he showed her pictures of his 4 year old daughter and said that he had to make it for her sake. He's an unvaccinated idiot, but that doesn't make these situations any easier for the folks caring for them to deal with. If anything it makes it more frustrating and soul crushing.
I've heard estimates that over a third of hospital support staff have quit their jobs since the beginning of the pandemic. It's hard to watch people come into a hospital by the hundreds and dying to basically a preventable illness. I can't imagine what hospitals are like in areas they don't have this kind of access to vaccines.

I don't have statistics on it, but there has been way more turnover among nurses than usual at the 2 hospitals my wife works at. People have been deciding that if they're going to be overworked in shit circumstances and get shit all over by antivax idiots and their loved ones on a regular basis then they might as well travel and fill spots on a locum basis and get paid waaaay more than they were to stay at one facility. In addition to the folks who are opting to leave healthcare entirely.
What's baffling to me are the nurses on strike for months at an end now. You would think the hospitals would be desperate to go back to the bargaining table but they just don't give a f.
Tynnanseldom correct, never unsureRegistered Userregular
And so many hospital administrators are consciously making the decision to not pay existing nursing staff what they deserve, but then they pay out the ear for locums??? Like, I understand that they are trying not to lock in higher nurse salaries and they consider locums payroll to be an acceptable cost of business. I just think that that decision is unconscionable.

Vendor: The price of equipment has gone up.
Company: Well that's just the cost of business.
Employee: The price of my labor has gone up.
Company: Now listen here you little shit.
My partner hasn't been feeling well, lots of sinus congestion and drainage and coughing. She left work early on Thursday, got a Covid test. Spent most of Thursday and Friday night coughing.
She's 35 weeks pregnant, so she cannot take many medicines.
She went to bed last night at 8:30pm. I went to bed separately on the couch about 10. She finally got her test results message last night/this morning. at 12:01
She's covid positive
I cannot find a test appointment anywhere until 4:45pm on Monday
And our work guidelines for vaxxed boosted and exposed are now call employee health services
and go to work while you wait
The nurse who tested and checked my partner told her she very probably didn't have it, since her lungs sounded fine and all the congestion was in her head
She's doing much better over the past 24 hours, and I'm feeling no symptoms at all.
I went and got swabbed yesterday.
Two years in and one of us finally caught it.
I'm almost certain she was exposed to Covid at work, going by when she first felt like garbage, which considering she works in a hospital, and her teammates are terrible with Covid protocols, is extremely aggravating and not at all surprising.

Sorry Doug. I can only imagine it’s a very stressful situation.
Anti vax father in law wasn't feeling well. After his children begged and begged he eventually went into urgent care. When he got back they asked if he had COVID. "Oh they didn't check me for that!" Which seems pretty suspicious that an urgent care in this day and age wouldn't check an octogenarian with COPD for COVID. He probably just refused the test.

well, pretty certain that my sister's fiancé has covid. given that they live with my parents and I, we may have covid also, so great I get to be stuck with my family, who I have seen go bugnuts cabin crazy in 8 hours. they were basically Lord of the Flies by 14 hours.
edit: I hope my bio-tech enhancements allow me to successfully resist the virus.

There are multiple people in my family and friend group who are reporting Omicron-like symptoms. They're all double or triple-vaxxed, but the fact that they're still showing symptoms worries me
I hear all these things about the relative mildness of this strain of COVID but I guess the word "relative" there gives me pause. That and if it can juke past three doses of vaccine, I worry about the strain after this one, and the one after that
I'm a bundle of anxiety these days, basically, have been for a while now I guess
Ontario is locking down on Wednesday, which is both a relief and immensely frustrating - if Ford'd taken the advice of the medical table and done a circuit breaker 3 weeks ago, maybe we wouldn't be on the verge of collapsing our hospital system
And... selfishly, maybe I'd get to keep going to the gym. I'm... really bummed out about not being able to do that; it's the one thing I was leaving the house to do consistently and was helping buoy my mental health a fair bit

New York Times: South Africa declares their Omicron wave over after only 6 weeks
Also New York Times: Data from three independent research teams in three countries indicated Omicron is indeed milder than other strains
Data shows that getting Omicron reduces your chance of getting Delta or other strains
