There are multiple people in my family and friend group who are reporting Omicron-like symptoms. They're all double or triple-vaxxed, but the fact that they're still showing symptoms worries me
I hear all these things about the relative mildness of this strain of COVID but I guess the word "relative" there gives me pause. That and if it can juke past three doses of vaccine, I worry about the strain after this one, and the one after that
I'm a bundle of anxiety these days, basically, have been for a while now I guess
It doesn't get completely by them though. By and by just about the entirety of breakthrough infections are mild and don't require hospitalization, which is still huge.

I mean, on the grand scale where “you almost definitely won’t die” lands, for sure, it seems better. But currently nearly 40% of the company I work for are out sick either with Covid, or what they assume to be Covid (since tests are currently as hard to score as a PS5 around here).
To be clear, that’s a workforce in the hundreds that is all vaccinated, mostly boosted, where nearly 40% of them came down with breakthrough symptoms bad enough to lay them up out of work, or at least hit them hard enough to make them realize “oh shit, this might be Covid.”
Anecdotes and all that, but it’s about as bad as I’ve seen it just in terms of how widespread it’s getting. And getting sick enough to miss work is a big goddamn deal for a lot of people in the US.

Ontario is locking down on Wednesday, which is both a relief and immensely frustrating - if Ford'd taken the advice of the medical table and done a circuit breaker 3 weeks ago, maybe we wouldn't be on the verge of collapsing our hospital system
And... selfishly, maybe I'd get to keep going to the gym. I'm... really bummed out about not being able to do that; it's the one thing I was leaving the house to do consistently and was helping buoy my mental health a fair bit
This is my wife's biggest struggle too, actually. She's not as much of a hermit as I am and the (small, distanced, mask wearing) gym classes she was going to were a big lifeline for her. But our dipshit governor refuses to consider even perfunctory restrictions while our cases are in the tens of thousands per day, so.

Yeah, like, I was going at quiet times (using the squat rack necessitates that even not in a pandemic, haha) with a NIOSH rated N95 I didn't remove for any part of the workout, so I felt safe doing so
And it was nice to see numbers go up on the weights! Felt like I was accomplishing something during the blasé weeks of cancelled social events. Even if, as an extrovert who has enough introverted interests to survive the pandemic okay, I wasn't able to do many of my usual emotional outlets, I at least could leave the house for that
And now it's like... well, fuck. I do have one or two outdoor options in skating or trying to skate ski again, and feel a little safer getting a coach for the latter this year, but I was really working towards something and now I'll be lucky to touch a barbell by March. It's an inherently privileged thing to be bummed about but well, I really prized the mental health boost I was getting from it! I do have dumbbells and can do some limited stuff here, but it won't have the satisfaction of progressing as much.
It also cancels the dog training class we were about to run in late January, so that's an additional bummer even if we knew it was unlikely to happen with the rising cases in December

Negative tests have always been a bit unreliable as a measure if you've definitively had covid, so that's not terribly surprising to me, although I can understand it being unnerving still with the CDC's immense willingness to throw us all under the bus

National positivity rate is somewhere around 25% right now, yeah, and only going to get worse before we're through Omicron. Around mid summer the federal government and every single state government just threw up their hands and said "okay, there are vaccines now, you're on your own fuckers."
And then the wealthy political elite who treat us as fodder to enrich them in the economic meat grinder wonder why people don't trust the government or want to vote for them, it's a real head scratcher.

I still don't have anyone in my immediate local social circle who has tested positive. It's almost more nervewracking waiting for the dominos to fall
(also the friend who is most likely to get it first (because she is a teacher) is also 4 months pregnant. Of course).
Our first positive case in our bubble just happened. We last saw her before she got infected so no concerns that she got any of the rest of us, but geez. She's probably the most careful person in the entire group too.

yeah we had some very cautious plans for this year which have now all been tabled, but only two of our bubble have jobs which will actually let us isolate/wfh as needed, so I expect one of the others to get it eventually.
My cousin's kids caught it at hockey practice just before Christmas, and my friend's family all have it because... well, one of the in-laws demanded to go see her family in Virginia and whoops!! (Really glad we helped get my friend's immunocompromised parents their boosters a week and a half before...)
I have some annoying cold symptoms of like, inflamed sinuses and a light cough, but my rapid test was negative and no one else in the house has developed symptoms (probably the more convincing element here), so I assume my body just hates me at the moment (as, comparably, everyone in my friend's house caught it at the same time after the brother/SIL came back)
The rest I have heard of are mostly friends of friends but it is definitely impacting at least one person in each of those social circles

Yeah, I feel like this year everyone with any degree of power just basically said “there’s vaccines now and this strain almost certainly won’t KILL you all the way, so get back to work, slackers” and man, I can’t believe that isn’t working out for everyone. So weird.

I really, really hope folks start realising that the owners and the political elite will feed us into the grinder with no hesitation. Collective action and bargaining is literally the only way to get a seat at the table. Getting a seat at the table is a literal life and death thing nowadays, it should get the attention and energy it deserves.

I think the vast majority of the US agrees with that stance though. Pretty much all my friends do.

If by rapid test you mean LFT then as far as I'm aware they're only really useful for population level stats stuff and picking up asymptomatic cases. If you have symptoms and if you can get a PCR test that's a much much better confirmation either way.
I mean it sounds like it's probably not covid in your case but forewarned is forearmed.

One million people got fucking COVID in the US yesterday.
What the lawn-mowing elbow-greased motherfuck.
Look, this just isn’t going to get solved at the federal level. This has to be fixed at the state level according to some old man so saw on tv… wait. I’m getting word this man is the leader of our country.
I bought like 50 KN95 masks and am hoping to have them soon. I won’t miss washing my cloth masks but they do fit better than KN95s I think. Like I get a good seal but they don’t hook under my chin the same way my cloth masks do and in my head it feels less secure.

I wish I could get one! Would love to! Buuuuut...
PCRs here in the province are now for travel, or for immunocompromised individuals, or for essential workers in hospitals/clinics
I am no longer qualified to receive one as they needed to limit use to prevent the whole system from busting down; even the travel ones which are $200 a pop and require proof of upcoming travel are completely booked out, my friend might be able to escape having to go to Nova Scotia for work thanks to that
The rapid antigen tests here (https://www.canadianshieldppe.ca/products/rapid-antigen-test-kits) are the best we can get since my sister managed to get one of the last boxes in December. Otherwise it's $40 for antigen tests at Shoppers Drug Mart using a special program online that someone made to find local appointments, or lining up at 4am at a local rec centre to collect the same box of 5 tests for free

Ah, my apologies. I'm in the UK and, for the moment (I think [since I last checked]), you can still get PCR tests in person or by post. Not a gloat or one-up, just an explanation.
Just I've heard of/know of a lot round here that are all coldy and think an LFT is enough to say for certain. But yeah if you can't get a PCR I guess all you can do is bunker down and monitor.

No worries! Canada's big issue has been that we don't have a lot of local pharmaceutical production since our best orgs were privatized in the 80s and moved out of country, hence why we were reliant on everyone else for vaccines etc. Our internally produced rapid tests were a fairly recent addition, and not really used much in favour of PCR until recently
We've also chronically underfunded hospitals for forever, and some provinces have privatized testing, and that all leaves us wildly unprepared on the testing end of things for demand on this level
From what I've heard the UK has a far more substantial setup, which is great!

The medical term of mild symptoms is anything you can survive without hospital level intervention, if I remember correctly.
That is not the colloquial usage of mild symptoms that most people mean.
