I'll take pineapple on any pizza. Pineapple is just delicious.

    You will thank me.

My go-to was always pineapple, green olives, and pepperoni. Nobody ever tried to mooch "just a slice" in college, because all my room-mates hated at least one thing on there.

My riding still hasn't been determined (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley). Yesterday a local reporter said they had 3400 mail ins to count with the cons currently leading by 109. I'm curious what is holding up the count. I'm really hoping Doug Eyolfson takes it.

That's my riding too! I sure hope Eyolfson doesn't lose by a single vote because then I might feel a little bad for voting NDP.

Don't worry, Elections Canada is busy confirming the exact numbers for ridings with a 20% or more margin of victory. -.-

Also JFC 22% for PPC in Portage-Lisgar.

Did I ever talk about how while I still had my Albertan uncle on facebook, I started challenging his sharing of absolute bullshit right-wing talking points, and not only did he never respond to any of them (probably because my shock-and-awe tactic was to write 1000-word responses to them? :p ) but he complained to my mother (his sister) that I should "mind my mouth and respect my elders."

And that's how I stopped being facebook friends with my Albertan uncle~

Them voting the same isn't even the biggest issue imo. The problem is there's just not very many Albertans comparatively.

So much of the things they complain about can be answered by simple population numbers: Ontario outnumbers Alberta. And Saskatchewan and Manitoba and even BC. Combined. Hell, Ontario outnumbers every province but Quebec put together by a small margin last I checked.

My experience with this shit has always been that Albertans or other people from out west bitching about being ignored stems in large part from a lack of appreciation for just how unevenly our population is distributed. Both in terms of land and in terms of provincial boundaries. There's this continued sense that they should have more say and little understanding of why that's not the case.

If Alberta want to matter, there's a very simple solution: increase the province's population by using the provincial government to create a place where people actually want to live.

Or they could keep electing conservatives.

AB/SK going mostly or entirely blue means that they can win by doing OK in Ontario, and... apparently they couldn't pull that off. Or Quebec. When you choose that level of polarization you get a feast-or-famine outcome, and today the menu is thin gruel, try again next time.

They could moderate and reap some benefits - I bet Trudeau would have been really happy with, say, 12 more MPs from AB. And if Albertans won't do that... that's a choice they make, not a law of physics.

The thing is, Alberta does matter. Disproportionately so, I'd say. Our entire national energy policy, a not insignificant part of our national budget, and a major component of our international diplomacy (not to mention a massive environmental crisis we're kicking down to future generations), is about keeping Alberta's oil flowing. Indigenous relations and land rights are balanced with Alberta's pipeline paths, and often take precedence on them. "Western alienation" is really a code word for "Alberta's not happy". Heck, when Trudeau won in 2019 a huge "issue" in the media was about how he could possibly govern without a single MP from Alberta.

Alberta isn't upset because they don't matter. They're upset because they are not the only thing that matters.

Here's an next-morning interview with someone from the maverick party who got half the votes of the Liberal candidate in that riding, if you want a sense of how little impact they had.

Heck, in a couple of other ridings they were around half as many votes as the _green_ candidate, which takes some effort in Alberta:

It's a democracy. The system already disproportionately represents less populated provinces as is.

Western alienation is fundamentally about certain people feeling like they should matter in frankly massive disproportion to their actual numbers among the electorate.

So, it seems that Kevin Vuong is going to take his seat. Not 100% counted yet but the stuff remaining is going to be... the ballots that were mailed in long before the allegations came up. I'm not expecting that to flip the results.

The weird thing, though, is winning the election may have sunk him. The Liberals correctly dropped him for not disclosing it, but that's a party issue, not a criminal one. If he'd lost then maybe that would just be the end of it... but as a sitting MP, already kicked out of the party, resigning is basically admitting guilt.

I'm still not sure whether politicians are actually better behaved than most people (and are just more closely scrutinized) or if it really is a matter of selecting for assholes when we choose leaders.

Speaking of which, have the Wexit bunch done anything since his victory? They were out screaming in 2019, but I didn't notice anything from them since Monday night.

Not Wexit specifically but Alberta's votes don't particularly matter in the federal election and it drives folks nuts.

ignore that they always vote the same like lemmings, though

Try telling them they should make a push for increasing immigration/refugees to increase their number of ridings and MPs

No argument from me. I am in the only prairie district to vote Liberal.

Does not change the fact that as you mentioned a large part of the national agenda was set by and because of Alberta. The entire country benefitted from the prosperity brought by that..... Losing that status has been used by politicians of every party in this province to drum up people's ire.

Our province is also run by an incompetent psychopath and our healthcare system is collapsing around us so things are a little fraught here atm.

Back to work in Québec! Today, Legault is introducing a new law that will ban anti-vaxxer protests near hospitals, covid testing and vaccination sites, schools, and daycares. They're hoping to have it adopted today, but to use the express-adoption process will require unanimous support by the National Assembly. Which shouldn't be hard since the Liberals, Québec Solidaire, and PQ are all in favour of it, so what could possibly go wrong...

    ...

    ...

Oh, one single CAQ MNA with delusions of grandeur quit the party because she wasn't given a cabinet position and became the sole Conservative MNA in Québec, the party that supports the anti-vaxxers and opposes all covid measures and which has been out in the streets protesting alongside Bernier's PPC. And their asshole leader has already made the asshole declaration that "protest rights have been abused by students and unions in the past so we're not against restrictions, but we will protect them for the persecuted minority of Québec".

    This will not go well.

In case it wasn't clear, the "persecuted minority" the Conservatives are standing up for are the minority alt-right anti-vaxxers who like screaming at children on school playgrounds. I'm ok with "persecuting" them.
