Hulu is probably the likely candidate to get a surge from folks leaving Netflix. They're the next biggest multi-company streaming service, aren't they?

We have Netflix but since having kids we hardly use it, might be worth talking to the wife about killing that sub if they get too fucky about us letting her brother use it.
Netflix isn't the only streaming service in the game anymore and hasn't been for years.
Netflix built an entire model on being the only option and did not plan for content creators taking their IP and starting their own services.
The obvious thing to do is "Netflix should create it's own IPs and then build a customer base from there".
The only issue is that they cancel anything after a season or 2 if it isn't the next stranger things.
Yes, they did plan for it as best they could as it's why they've been sinking billions into content development, studio support and other items.

I think Netflix bet too hard on standup for their "original" content. They allegedly gave a truckload of money to Chappelle and even without his controversies, I don't think that's a model keeping subscribers long term.

From our viewing habits, I'd say we do watch a lot of standup on Netflix and others, but that's when we're bored and tired enough to want to watch TV, but between more interesting shows. It certainly would not be a strong driver on subscription choices despite what usage metrics might otherwise indicate.

I mean if you're big into standup, Netflix became your default because they loaded up the money truck and poached all the big names away from HBO and Comedy Central. But it's still not a very big market so even successfully cornering it wasn't much of a competitive advantage.
Google's spam caller detection is getting pretty good.
The company I work for makes lots of out going calls to speak with customers. These are legitimate calls and not spam. Every so often we have to ask all of the phone providers to remove our number from the spam list. If enough people report it, it will get added back.
Anybody have recommendations for a cheap big tablet? Good is good, but I don't need much from it. Mainly just web browsing and viewing pdfs. I want something that I can stick on my music stand when I play piano and actually see it, but not have to worry about being out an expensive device if it slides off and I don't catch it.

I'd go with a used basic ipad. They just announced a refresh of that model so the previous gen should be at a reduced price.
it’s really annoying just how many things these days are subscriptions. trying to find an app to replace dark sky because apple is killing it, and the most commonly cited thing to replace it requires a subscription to do what i want. and that has happened all over the tech space, i can’t stand having all these random subscriptions to use every single service out there.

if you give me $13.99 a month (OR AS LOW AS $120/YEAR *BEST VALUE*) I can tell you which services still don't require a subscription

I've found that Apple's own weather app is just as good if not better than Dark Sky was about notifications. However, I prefer Dark Sky's interface and daily/morning forecast. Unless it just completely stops working come January 2023 I'll just keep using it to check the weather while keeping Apple's weather notifications on like I've been doing.
Carrot Weather seems to be pretty popular but it just costs too much money. It looks nice and uses the Apple WeatherKit/Dark Sky forecast information but it's not $20 per year nice. That's just way too much money. I'm ok with a few apps costing $5-10 per year if I use them regularly like Parcel but above $10 is where I draw the line.

Yeah, Carrot looks great and the devs did a wonderful job and all that, but these people are crazy if they think I’m gonna pay $20 a year for an app that just works a little better than the free one that comes on my phone.
Ironically, if it was like a $50 one time payment, I’d actually probably just do it.

what really gets me is that i paid for a bunch of apps back when "one time payment" was THE only option... and all they did was increase the version number and suddenly im on the free version again
"please support us".... i already supported you.....
as always, thank you apple for completely obliterating the consumer software industry
That happened with our LabView license this year at work. They shifted all permanent development licenses to subscription based starting Feb. 2022. We renewed out support contract every year so that let us access newer versions of LabView, but this year we're going to let it lapse and keep the existing license as-is. We'll buy a new subscription one when we have to and roll the costs into that project.

My God I hate LabView, and not because of this issue. Clunky-ass software.

It's very "good" at what it's good at, but god help you if you have to deviate away from that at all for any reason
I understand why some people like it's niche but we don't do a lot of work with it. I just thought it was funny LabView decided that software we've owned for ten years isn't ours anymore.

I think they had to do that because it became untenable for a lot of their customers to get back up to date. My last employer stopped buying yearly licenses in like 2015 or 2016 and the only way they could get current and receive NI software support again in 2020 was to pay the 4 years of licensing fees missed.

I mean, they've also dramatically increased the support fees year over year in the same time frame as well.

Everyone has, but that's still preferred to paying for previous versions to catch up. We could not make any case to re-up and get support because just getting current to the 2020 was going to cost like $25k. That amount is an estimation though. Our regional sales rep wouldn't even provide a quote back then it was so far out of our price range.

I bought a Lenovo Chromebook Duet. It's ... mostly a tablet. The ChromeOS is user friendly enough for my needs.
It was like ... $240? 10.1" with a detachable keyboard and back cover with kickstand
I'm seeking ideas on a sort of a stereo project I'm working on. I have an old record player case I've fixed up that I'd like to convert into a shop stereo. It's 13" x 13" x maybe 8 or 9" deep. I'd like to get a touch screen, a sound bar, a small PC or something that has a way to store my mp3 collection (currently around 300gb), and a couple fans.
I'd at least like to limit it to a single power switch and monitor switch so I don't have to cut a ton of holes in the case.
I know I could assemble one out of old mobo, ram, PSU, ssd, and stuff, but I really don't want to have to buy a dozen parts if I don't have to. Looking at mini PCs though, I couldn't put them inside the case since there's not a way to install a custom power switch.
I'd like for the thing to have windows since I don't know squat about any other OS.
I feel like I'm missing something obvious in all my efforts.
edit:
or maybe I just buy a 10 year old dell inspiron (small form factor), gut it, and cram it in.
just toss the case and the cd drive in the garbage, hook up a touch screen monitor, a sound bar, and rock on?
There are a few current miniPCs that could work (Intel NUC for example) to base this on. Not sure about a remote on button for those, but I have in the past made a remote on switch for a PC just by running wires from a button directly to the motherboard pin headers. It was even an LED button, so it lit up when the PC was on. Swish.
An alternative would be something smaller that reads the MP3s from a network storage deal, so you don't need so much hardware inside the case. Or just mount an old phone in there that has some of the music on it. Someone's probably made a raspberry pi based music player before?
Edit: An alternative alternative would be to make it basically a bluetooth/air-play/multi-room speaker dealie. That way there's less to put in it and you have some flexibility with how/where you use it. I know Yamaha makes a little amp (standard half-rack sized) that you can wire speakers into and use via bluetooth or air-play or USB to a PC or via their music cast multi-room stuff or aux-in.
I ended up getting the old inspiron, a custom switch, a small USB sound bar, and a 7" touch screen monitor. Total cost: $140
The monitor is powered by the PC as is the sound bar, so everything should come on with one button. The touch screen claims to be plug and play with windows 10. I imagine I'll need kbam to set it up, but hopefully once that's finished it will be as simple as pressing a button and tapping a few icons!

The seven seas, like they did before Netflix was good and cheap and convenient.
Haven't been able to pull that plug yet, even though she's been dead for 7 years.
