Discord has partnered with console platforms before, though its deal with Microsoft was not a particularly deep integration. This is almost certainly more than a “friends can see what you’re playing on PS5” and more of a “this is an alternative chat infrastructure for anyone on a Sony system.” Chances are it’ll be a deep, system-wide but clearly Discord-branded option — such as “Start a voice chat with Discord” option when you invite a friend to your game or join theirs.
Idk man I just wanna be able to play destiny crossplay and have it work without having to use my goddamn phone and seems to me we're getting further from that not closer thanks to this deal. It feels like an update that would have come to all consoles eventually is being fast tracked for one. And it's annoying.

And yet the only console it was on for about 3 years before this was XBox. 'Eventually' doesn't really seem like it was actually on the table.
Anyone here old enough to remember Myth & Myth 2 by bungie? Their games have all been downhill since then but what I would give for more games along that vein from them.
Finished Uncharted 4. My god. What a fucking stunner. The writing and acting was incredible. Like I’ve always been impressed by mocap in modern games, but the actors and writers really knocked it out of the park with this one. Jesus Christ just grinning from ear to ear when it ended. So satisfying.

All I remember about the myth games, can’t remember which one I played, was it was immensely intriguing and unique but I could never beat the first battle or mission

Is anyone else wondering about how the price of Bungie adds up?
That’s one Star Wars or half a Bethesda. Though those didn’t happen recently by now I guess. But Zenimax/Bethesda is also a publisher with some of the most popular franchises in the world, including one that’s sold like 30-40 million and has been in the top ten most sold games most of the past ten years. Bungie is a large, very competent, studio that has one current game. I thought the concurrent numbers for Destiny were also quite low?
It seems like a huge amount considering, I don’t get it at all.

Yeah.. TBH as someone who used to be a huge bungie fan they do feel a bit past their heyday since destiny. (as in it's all been downhill starting w/ destiny)

I think they’re still a top tier studio, but I sympathize with that viewpoint because the best of Destiny is largely inaccessible to most new players. I don’t know if they have the specific skillset required to build an RTS, but their art team is amazing, and they will deliver on some incredibly satisfying gameplay, vagaries of mmo grind notwithstanding.
There's a few things there. The biggest is that Bungie has been making online games for 20+ years now. Despite being stuck in the past with P2P connections, Destiny 2 is a marvel that it even works (and sometimes it doesn't!). For better or worse destiny's spaghetti code is actually a feat of engineering.
The second is pedigree, Halo literally created Xbox as we know it today. The social features of the 360 were heavily inspired by Halo 2's friends list and custom lobbies system. And they went even further with the theater mode and forge mode for Halo 3 which predate baked in console video capture by 7 years.
And the third is IPs. Destiny is a massive IP. On Steam alone it has 50k players a month on a slow month. When a new content drop hits it jumps to double that. A similar game would be Apex Legends, which hovers around 150k these days. They're both supported by season passes and cosmetics shop. But the game itself is why people keep coming back. While some people are burned out on the concept, it's truly unlike anything else; a really compelling narrative told over 10 years in a shooter is unheard of. I'm a huge critic of Destiny but I've sunk untold hours into the game because it's fun as a PvP and PvE game. Destiny has the potential to become a game you essentially never have to stop playing, if they get it right. It's not for everyone, and that's why I think they actually need numbered entries so people have better jumping on points. People may have missed Destiny 1 and so are missing a large bit of context for the current state of the game. Still a massive IP despite it's issues.
^and all that? Doesn't even count the other IPs they have, both established and in the works. Bungie has a huge library even without halo to dip into.

The weirdest thing to me about destiny 2 is how they lock certain game modes out of matchmaking (raids) i've done raids a few times with premade groups, but rarely because it's rare for me to have a group of that many friends on at once and.....they're far easier than playing Vermintide 2 at high difficulty; anything in GTFO, Deep rock deep dives, or hell even the maelstorm in R6 extraction for something recent which i play with matchmaking all the time so difficulties not a reason. it just seems like an elitist "fuck you" to anyone w/out a large pool of premades to draw from at all times
Destiny really is a game meant to be played with friends or a clan. The forums here are a really good place to find people to play with! Raids with matchmaking might be pretty terrible. For instance another endgame mode, the endgame PvP mode, was given general matchmaking recently and the experience for solo players is... Brutal to say the least. It's nice to have as an option but only for the most masochist of players. Doing raids with LFGs is similarly annoying, but really only in the endest of end game Master content (the general Normal mode raids are pretty easy now and I could see a raid playlist in the future).
After they added crossplay, the three sides of the playerbase converged on discord

Could be a combination of the current sellers' market and that there were multiple parties interested in Bungie (Jeff Grubb mentioned this), which drove up the price. I don't think Mojang and Insomniac would go for anywhere near the prices they did if they were selling today.
Just what the PS5 needs, cursor driven menus with a controller. I absolutely hate moving a cursor around with a joystick to navigate to stuff in a menu.

I actually find it quite intuitive after using it for 7 years now https://youtu.be/zp4NZ8i80QI
(I recommend turning this on 2x speed and skipping to 3 mins in)
as a fun fact, it was announced today that the next Destiny 2 expansion, The Witch Queen, has sold 1,000,000 copies for pre-order
That's 1 million people spending at least $40, with many instead spending $80 to get the deluxe edition which includes all the season passes for the rest of the year, each of which is $10, for an expansion that isn't out yet
In addition to popularity, Destiny is also a reliable Game as a Service game. When they're hits, they're big and continuous moneymakers. Microsoft has a few of these, but surprisingly Sony's stayed out of that space and focused on single-player stuff. Well, until now. The shift away from single-player stuff and to persistent online stuff, at least in the AAA space, continues.

I think the success that PlayStation has had with all their AAA single-player exclusives while persistent online games are also available on their platform is proof that there is a market for both, and one doesn't have to shift away from one to support the other.

Which is definitely true, but in the AAA space they've been one of the relatively few holdouts against the trend. Here's hoping the Bungie purchase isn't an indication they're going to shift and we'll get less single-player stuff.
Destiny 2 has a billion issues to criticize, but the good things about it are extremely good. The shooting, the lore (YES THERE IS A TON OF IT), the art, the characters, the story...
The dialogue writing has problems (i don't have time to explain), the early story was a mess and very badly communicated. But after they got rid of Activision, Bungie has made amazing strides there too.
The vaulting content stuff is very unfortunate though, and only made the game more cryptic for new players, not less. I hope they can rework it out better.

I think if they wanted to shift from one to the other, they could have done so with their existing studios. Bringing on more studios allows them to branch out without having to make their current studios pivot.
Which is really goddamn ambitious. Supposedly this will be done through a partnership between Bungie and PlayStation Studios, so unless Sony plans on going on a huge buying spree between now and then, at least some of the pipeline will switch over.
It'll be every Sony IP you know, but slathered in Destiny's RNG weapon and armor hunting. "YOU LOVED GOD OF WAR, BUT WHAT IF YOU COULD HUNT FOR THE PERFECT AXE FOR 40 HOURS!?" ... and never find it, despite your friend getting 5 but they can't trade them to you.

The BETHESDA number is whatever but I can't believe DISNEY paid that little for LucasArts. That is a steal. Same with Marvel (which they bought for about the same cost).

Gosh yeah, I don't want to move a cursor in a console UI at all. But I also think the PS5 UI is totally fine and just needs the continual reiterations like fixing the trophies that they did.

I tried to watch the State of Play, but all it did was remind me just how boring I find the Gran Turismo series. It looks gorgeous but absolutely boring to play. You simulation racing fans, this game will be a feast for you.
If you’re curious about the games-MTX revenue split on PlayStation.
Wow! This seems to suggest that a bit more than 1/2 of the total income to Games&Network is from PSN sales. No wonder they are so willing to take a (small) loss on hardware - they definitely make it up on digital sales!

Yup, I'm honestly dying to get my hands on it. It's less of a simulation and more of a car enthusiast simulator, which I love for unwinding. The photograph mode is amazing on this one.
It's sad that they still can't get sound right, that VW Bug sounded nothing like a VW Bug, even in GT4 it sounded better

I’m a huge car enthusiast and love racing games of all sorts but the lack of car damage in GT games has always made them feel hollow and ultimately boring to me looks like they’re not changing that for 7 either, boo urns
