Basically everyone uses shields for everything. And shields are great at stopping extremely fast moving objects, like bullets. They are terrible for regular speed things or slow things, so hand to hand becomes important again.
Lasers also exist but are never really used because everyone dies when a laser hits a shield. Nuclear kablammo.

I had a hard time remembering if those weapons were lasers or particle beams as used on screen, because the effect read to me more as the latter, but then I do remember lasers being a thing in Dune

Huh, I has been about 10 years since I read DEWN but I did remember it as a robot uprising that was put down, maybe I simplified it in my head instead of a pre-emptive scourging of the robots.
It's considered so completely taboo and forbidden that even the rumor of it would be enough to get a noble house thrown out of the Landsradd and forced into exile.
Or still used, just done very very quietly without any survivors.
Knives, even old school pistols (dart guns) and artillery still exist. Those weapons were never uninvented along with nukes, but shields and combat lasers were THE big warfare advancement along with human genetic engineering for reflexes, precognition and strategic planning.
The rules on WMDs are a bit more Battletech than a total weapons ban. There is a political cost to using such weapons without restraint, but they absolutely are used.

Watched the movie, loved the movie, was unsurprised by the movie. It was exactly what I thought it would be, no more and no less
I also felt like the music was good and appropriate and all but not… well, it didn’t have themes or motifs, and if there’s an epic that could make good use of themes, it’s Dune. Don’t really know why we’re all so afraid of big recognizable musical themes these days! I want them back
Currently rereading the book to try and make it through the sequels for the first time, I do recall the Butlerian Jihad being explicitly about “thinking machines” but I guess that could be referring to a lot of things

but I felt like he was more... massive in this than he was fat. Like, he's fat in the way that Kingpin is fat, he's just a terrifying hulk of a figure
this feeling is kinda undercut by him also looking like an old Marlon Brando with alopecia, though.
they even fucked up the fat part later on where he was like cursed by the bene gessit or something. originally it's used as a way to characterize the baron's desire to always have more. you must hunger for power in the same way that you hunger for food, and you can never have too much of either

It's fine that he's fat imo, I didn't feel the film used it as to say "ewww look he's fat isn't that evil of him". It wasn't played for laughs, didn't have shots of him eating disgustingly or anything. Skarsgard's acting leant toward brutality and calculation very well.
Speaking of acting, Isaacs and Brolin were class acts. Chalamet sucked all the gravitas out of the room though, summoned about as much charisma as a damp fart.

I thought the Baron worked because he was big, but not in a way intended to disgust or demean
I actually liked how he floated around, because it felt less like “oh he’s so fat he can’t even walk,” he could clearly get around if he had to, he just refuses to because he’s The Baron. It felt more like it was meant to evoke a sense of arrogance or decadence than anything else
He’s a genuinely threatening presence in every scene, I thought Skarsgard totally killed it
I think it's mostly fine and it's certainly better than I've seen in other movies
I think it was treading a fine line staying faithful to the book without making it like the 84 movie baron which was definitely worse.
I do like how menacing it was when he levitated too, really inhuman. Like all the giedi prime stuff.
The sardukar were also cool as hell with their creepy prison warrior cult planet and the way they drop down all slow and silent.
The harkonon soldiers also looked suitably like the Baron's idea of knock off sardukar.
Honestly everything about the visual design of the movie was incredible I thought. The ships and tech and characters all had that 70s sci Fi weirdness to it
My girlfriend really liked it, she’s been going around the house chanting DUNE for the last hour or so
tell her it's pronounced d-eeehyuuune.

Stilgar and Chani aren't in the movie much, but they crush it in the brief time they get. Stilgar in particular has this whole, "ruthless but tired dad" energy.
This movie is like when the first Peter Jackson LotR movie came out, it's so good and finally looks right.

My big hope now is we get a three and a half hour extended edition on Blu ray too, because as good as this was I definitely felt like there was a lot more written for these characters that we didn’t get to see

The baron looked creepy cause the long robes and the floating made him seem like a malevolent spirit, like straight up the super tall ghost from Hill House had the same energy. He's not a balloon bobbing around cackling like a cartoon villain. He's very subdued, intense, and deliberate. And then they find him after the poisoning, clinging to life on the ceiling like a loathsome spider. All credit to Stellan Skarsgaard for putting in the work and everyone on the design team who did the effects for him.
"Go down, kick ass, and set yourselves up as gods, that's our Prime Directive!"
