    Question:

if I sub for a month or whatever, and then let the sub lapse, can I still play, but just like, lose access to some things (like retainers, can't level up above 60, etc)? Or is it that once you sub if you let it lapse, you're locked out? (I have neither the income nor the attention span to make subbing for long periods worth it)

The latter. The Free Trial is called that for a reason, the game is not free to play in that sense.

Once an account has had any paid subscription time, it's not allowed to go back to a Free Trial.

    WELP.

Guess I'm Free Trial forever then, that's a bummer. I really prefer hybrid systems like ESO, makes it easier to pick up and play casually.

They actively encourage people to take time away rather than just stay subbed forever, but yeah it's monthly at the least.

There are discord channels for them, one for each data centre.

Once you have it set up you can get pings whenever a train is starting or an S rank pops.

Can't decide if I want to bother capping tomes before Endwalker. I mean, everything I'd buy is becoming Poetics anyway, so it's not like I'd be getting anything now I can't get later, just as easily. Though, maybe since I'm capped on poetics, and won't have anything to spend them on till Friday (i've got all the buyable items for all relics of all expansions for all jobs :rotate: ), getting that "extra" 900 for another piece or two of Cryptlurker for alt jobs is kinda letting me go over the Poetics cap, technically? And the trains would let me get another upgrade item from nuts; which, given that they'll likely be 100 tomes like usual, might not be the most effective use of time, because 3000 nuts is a bunch of runs! So maybe not the best use of time. Instead of leveling the last couple jobs I have left (drk at 77, gbn at 72, mnk at 73, everything else is 80) I spent yesterday doing BLU stuff, trying to get the skills to do mog tome runs, and did the first 24 carnivale things, but was too tired to do the last one (that you can access at 50, I'm only 56 BLU).

I don't know if that was a good use of time, but it was fun!

Maybe I'll just spend the next couple days in Zadnor getting the things for the final relic upgrade and xp for those last couple jobs. I could, if I wanted, finally have a relic maxed before the next expansion...Even if only by a day.

Man, as a newbie to FFXIV most of the things you all talk about go above my head. For me, even now, I'm not sure what to do with duty roulette, not that I have that many open. I have one 50 job, Ninja. Everyone else is 20-35 and I don't know if using the Roulette Leveling for 50 is even worth it or I should be using it on my lowest job. I know about doing Fate's. I faintly remember the Beastman tribe thing, but dont' remember what they were for, or the Ixtal? Anyone willing to put it down, Barney Style, on things I should be doing Daily to help level uhm..fighting Jobs, and what to use for crafting jobs? I never touch the Golden Saucer cuz I can't remember what it's good for. Hell, all the things you can exchange or Guildmete vs levemete is all confusing as well.

You get a bonus for each of your first roulettes each day. What you want to use it on is up to you, but generally I'd say use it on your lower-level jobs. Reason-being, your highest-level job is (presumably) the one going through the MSQ, and that gives you a BUNCH of xp on its own, so you don't have to worry about it as much. But I've roulette'd on that job myself just because I was still in the mood to BLM something.

It kinda depends on what you wanna do and how fast you wanna do it. You don't have to do FATEs, or hunts, or whatever unless it's interesting for you or you are in a rush.

After you've gotten your daily bonus, one way to do it is just queue up for your highest-level dungeon in the Duty Finder with whatever job you wanna level, and repeat.

For crafting, people recommend the Firmament in Ishgard, although I didn't like that. But, to help you determine, are you doing just crafting, or crafting and gathering? If you're doing both, the Firmament is probably best because the leveling you do for your Gatherer will directly play into making the Crafting go by better.

Edit: Someone else can do a better job here, I was just mostly giving some surface-level thoughts/suggestions :D

Almost all of the time there are going to be multiple ways to progress larger tasks like leveling a job. There might be one option that is a bit faster, but normally not too much and less efficient methods might have secondary benefits as well, so you can feel like you are making progress in multiple areas. I typically stick to doing what feels fun at the time, which helps keeping me from burning myself out.

I wonder if they'll do with Cryptlurker what they did with Scaevan in ShB and make Augmented the default, and take the "unique" tag off rings.

Hopefully we will get prelim 6.0 notes tomorrow and questions will be answered.

I bolded the tl;dr part, because I have a tendency to ramble.

The daily xp bonus from any roulette scales with your level, so whether you're 50 or 80, you'll get an amount that is relative to your current level and xp needed to level. The bonus isn't a flat number though, because it shifts depending on whether or not a dungeon has a lot or few enemies, and how much XP you should get during the dungeon itself.

Generally, expect 20-30% of a level for most roulettes, with the MSQ roulette the only major difference (well, trials and 8m raids give much less, but they're expected to be much faster) with Castrum giving 30ish percent, and Praet giving more like 50-60% of a level. It's also far and away the longest roulette option, aside from really unfortunate alliance raids that just wipe a lot. However, at least afaik, the 50 MSQ roulette is going away with Endwalker. Their plans might have changed, I haven't really seen it brought up recently, but in the past they made it clear to expect it to go away, as they were looking for other solutions for players to do Castrum and Praet. It's a bummer on one hand because it was an excellent source of XP and poetics, but on the other hand, even with the influx of players recently, it was still incredibly uncommon to get a new player in a party, and it gave such a huge reward for players to do that roulette that you could feel like you were missing out if you didn't do it, despite such a huge time investment needed.

And if you're at the level cap, instead of XP you'll get appropriate tomestones, to make doing non-level cap dungeons worth your time and to keep queues moving.

If you're 50, just do MSQ honestly, you really shouldn't need anything else. You can spend time in roulettes, but for your first run through the MSQ you shouldn't really ever need them, and you can focus on doing the MSQ itself. Plus if you queue for a dungeon/trial/24m that is needed for the MSQ you'll get priority over people in roulettes, so you generally shouldn't have to wait too long for any MSQ stuff.

It's never a terrible idea to be concurrently leveling 2 or more jobs when doing the MSQ, for times when you're overleveling it and don't want to "waste" XP on your main job. What I mean is, if you get to 80 before the end of 5.0 MSQ, sub-80 quests would still reward XP if you were below 80, and that XP is going nowhere if you don't have another job in the level range of the MSQ. It's more work, sure, but not a lot, and the MSQ xp rewards for quests, after Shadowbringers at least (maybe Heavensward?) are significantly higher than sidequest XP rewards. I know I'm overcomplicating it, but to give an example, when I start Endwalker Friday, I'll have two jobs (for me it'll be RDM and PLD) that I will trade off handing in MSQ quests for, depending on if the main job (RDM) is overleveling the questlines.

Having said all of that, roulettes aren't necessarily the best way to level up, but it really depends on what you have access to. Once you can access Palace of the Dead, and later Heaven on High, for time spent, they're far and away the best source of XP for their level ranges. They can burn you out real quick though, so it's good there are so many other options.

Guildhests are terrible for XP; however, as you're leveling sub 50, you can get a first time completion reward for every job, for every hest. They're all fast enough that it's worth doing them once, on every job, for that bit of bonus, and when you're doing these, you can usually complete the associated challenge log entry, but outside of that, they're really not worth the time. If you're at 9/10 for the challenge log XP reward, it's fine to do a quick guildhest. However, if you haven't done any, the XP reward might seem enticing, but you'll get more XP out of running literally anything else, in the time it takes to do those 10 hests.

Leves on DoW/M jobs aren't worth the time unless you need them for some other goal (relics, mainly), or if you just want the checkmark for them for first time completion. Your Leve budget is much better used on DoH/L.

Fate trains aren't what they used to be, but hey, sometimes you might want a change of pace. Generally they're decent XP, they just don't hold up to so many other options anymore. Plus, there are so many things, later, that require you to do fates for rewards (generally relics) for old fates, that even if you want to do fate trains, you are probably better waiting until you've unlocked the respective quest to do those fates, for any given relics, so you're not doing ones you had already done a billion times. Assuming you care about relics at all. The only exception, maybe, is Shadowbringers fates, as there are associated rewards for doing them, and doing a certain amount of them.

But, anyway, at lower levels before you have access to all sorts of things, leveling wise, daily; these aren't firm scientific rankings, but generally in order for the best xp for time spent, however, always keep in mind your playstyle and level of burnout and desire to grind any given thing:

#0 Challenge Log. Just be sure to check it and make sure you're getting the XP rewards for things like dungeons on the job you want. I wouldn't go out of my way to complete the ones for guildhests, fates, or leves unless you're doing them for some other specific reason, as none of them, on their own, are worth the time it takes to complete them for XP alone.
    #1 MSQ
#2 Under 50: Hunt Log (you should always do these for every job under 50, they give very large chunks of xp, one time, and are easy to do, and you can frequently do several levels over you, particularly with a Chocobo companion)
#3 PotD/HoH (if you have it unlocked)
    #4a Daily Roulettes (MSQ > Leveling > Alliance Raids > 50/60/70)
#4b Beast Tribe Dailies while in queues (HW on at least, the level 50 Best Tribes don't scale like they do in subsequent expansions, so their rewards are pretty poor)
#4c Clan Hunts while in queues
#5 Squadron Dungeons (once you have access to PotD this isn't super effective, but it's a change of pace)

    Post 71:
BSF/Zadnor > everything else, efficiency wise. Almost to a silly degree. EDIT: Once you've unlocked them, I mean; you'll have to have completed the ShB MSQ up to and including 5.5 in order to have full access to them.

Again, these are not necessarily in a scientifically determined "best order", but I think they're pretty close, and everyone is going to have stuff they'd prefer to do over others and your personal priority will likely be different.

Also, as you're doing the MSQ, be sure to do any quest with a "+" symbol on it. They unlock important side features like PotD, dungeons that aren't in the MSQ, etc.

Beast tribes are just daily content, and are ignorable if you don't care about extra rewards. However, from HW on, they each give XP for the expansion level range, that scales with your level and are very worth doing for XP alone. Some are for DoW/M, some are DoH/L. They're usually unlocked at the level cap for the expansion, so they're only helpful, XP wise, for alt jobs.

I don't want to give any advice for leveling DoH/L right now because we know that some XP rewards for things like leves will be changing in Endwalker, but we don't know how much right now. But, generally, there are beast tribe dailies, leves, daily turnins to your Grand Company, Collectable turnins, custom deliveries, etc. Honestly though, I wouldn't worry too much about DoH/L jobs until you're done with the MSQ unless you just really dig crafting/collecting; doing either very well at any given level range typically requires an amount of investment that you won't be able to easily access before you're done with the MSQ (i.e. access to areas, money, etc).

As far as all the other systems and currencies, etc, I honestly wouldn't worry about them. PvP is about the only thing I can think of, off the top of my head, that the game doesn't explain very well at all, and the majority of questions you have about this thing or that, will be answered once you can access them via normal gameplay; or at least once you need them, the game will direct you and give you an arbitrary goal that has you carry out the function so that you'll understand it.

Oh, another thing to keep in mind about leveling other jobs.

You'll get a bonus for jobs under your highest level job. It's called the Armory Bonus, and it is reduced for the current expansions level range (i.e. right now 71-80), but sub 70 it's +100% xp for alternate jobs.

Rested XP only applies to xp gained from kills. It doesn't apply to any other XP, including daily roulette XP rewards, challenge log rewards, etc. Kills, and only kills. So if you don't have rested XP, generally, don't sweat it, unless for some reason you're just spamming the highest level dungeon for kill XP (which, generally, there are better options anyway).

You can find more here, if you'd like.

And I know I said I wouldn't give advice for DoH/L jobs, but one thing that won't change, that people frequently don't consider, is that you get a pretty huge XP bonus for your first time crafting or collecting a specific item. If you're crafting to level, for example, you're better off checking off everything in your log, over spamming one single item over and over. And if you're leveling any DoL job, make sure to collect every item, once, for the bonus, even if it's otherwise worthless. The only exceptions to this is anything in your "secondary" sections in your crafting/collecting logs. I.E. crafts from mastery books, or dyes, don't give you a completion bonus. The exception to this, for crafting, is Housing items do give you an XP bonus for first time completion. For DoL, afaik, the only things that don't give you that XP are collectable items (for scrips or for custom deliveries).

And further talking about our weirdo terminology--hunt trains. So you likely know hunts from the basic introductions you run into in game, go find and kill something. There are special, tough enemies that spawn in the world as well though, and in FFXIV the common way to kill them is to wait until they're all up, send out the call, and then travel zone by zone in a teleporting murder blob killing each of the special marks. The Aetherhunts discord is the big one for the Aether DC, with roles and pings and all that. There are usually hunt linkshells in game that forward info along.

It's fun and a pretty wild show of maximizing benefit for as many people as possible that usually none of the mobs are stolen before the hunt train is conducted.

Granted, hunt trains can sometimes be firing so fast you just end one, world transfer, clear another, etc. so it's ludicrously fast income on tomes and tokens. The blob isn't content to kill everyone on one server, it exterminates the entire data center in an organized fashion.

EDIT: I absolutely recommend joining the Aetherhunt discord. Even the best linkshell tends to be stocked with a ton of inactive players, unless the people running it are super proactive about keeping it full of only active people, but the discord is the one way to make sure that you rarely miss a hunt you're aiming for, and is going to be particularly useful in 6.0 when people hit 90 and start doing hunts, in instanced zones.

Now, whether or not you can manage to make it to a hunt, particularly the older S ranks, is another question entirely.

Also it's totally random whether or not Gilgamesh hunts get announced there because Gilgamesh.

A non trivial thing to mention is that crafting quests and beast tribe quests have a story, some are better than others but they are usually quite involving. The Ixal for example I really got invested in, and then several expansions later they got some completely different content adding more to their story, so I was stoked that I’d done it. Another standout beast tribe was the Namazu, just so much character and wit. It’a a slow burn, but it’s one of the things I really like about this game.

Thank you all for the advice. I'm going to read it, digest and read again just for the knowlege!

The reason I was asking is twofold. A) My 50 ninja was only getting 4,800 per MSQ at this point in the quest chain, and I was near lvl 51 and didn't want to lose that 700k or whatever I had when the expansion drops, if I understand the reset to 0xp thing correctly. So I just ran the Leveling roulette and got that level and am barely into 51 so I'm happy. I really need to get my lower(20'sh) to 30 so I can unlock the other Jobs that look cool.

    B) My main reason was I hear all these cool things being talked about in here and on chat( I'm in Novice chat right now as someone that recently returned) and I'm curious to what I'm missing out on! I always hated, and it's happened in almost every MMO I've played, that I see some neat thing and skip it as I'm leveling and trying to learn the game, to find out there was a reward there I could have gotten easily and now to get it, I have to pay cash or jump through stupid hoops.

Again, Thank you all for the help and advice!

Yeah the MSQ during post-release patch content, IE all the stuff between the first credits roll in each expansion and the start of the next expansion, doesn't give much experience because when those were current you did them at the level cap so exp would be pointless.

Ah right, the patch content (ie stuff you're on now till you get to Heavensward, and similar stuff at the end of every other expansion) rewards very little xp. It'll pick up again once you reach HW

Oh yah, for (a) MSQ XP plummets when you're doing post-patch stuff because that was designed for level capped characters. It'll pick up again when you get to Heavensward.

Stuff like (b) does come up in FFXIV with events but they're usually fairly well-advertised. Like the Moogle tomestone event right now.

XIV seasonal event rewards are absolutely a one-shot deal for most of them, but aside from some collab stuff the only requirement for any of them is getting far enough into the MSQ... by which I mean level 15 or so. And the three starting cities will all have event stuff up advertising it and such.

I finished the MSQ a couple of weeks ago, and I’m constantly finding content to do that I didn’t know existed. This game is HUGE. Try to take a breath every so often as you go, it can get overwhelming if you are trying to power through 10 years of MSQ in one go.

    re: B

The only things in XIV that you can really ever miss are seasonal holiday events and Feast end of season rewards.

And even then, for seasonal events, previous year rewards sometimes come back the next year (but not always, and almost never the seasonal quest rewards), and things that don't come back end up on the mogstation the next year. They're only ever outfits, furniture or mounts, and it's usually only one or two things each event. There is an absolutely insane amount of all of those things in XIV without even getting near the Mogstation. EDIT: And seasonal quests are usually like 20 minute affairs, so you're not really missing much in content there either.

Don't feel bad about Feast rewards either; while they've had some cool mounts, and more recently outfits, such a small % of players even do that to begin with that even if you've been playing since 1.0 like some of us, you can go years without seeing anyone with any of them, so you don't even feel bad about it.

Otherwise, XIV is excellent for not really ever removing content. Even when they change things like the previously discussed potential future removal of the MSQ Daily Roulette, they aren't removing content, just a specific way to access it, while leaving others open. In fact, XIV frequently goes out of its way to encourage returning to old content as a way to give players more to do, and have players engage with each other, more frequently, of all levels. While there's no lack of people dancing in Limsa for weeks on end, XIV is all about keeping the world alive and people out in it. Sure, you'll never replicate expansion launches when zones are flooded with people, but do a few hunt trains and it's still sometimes awe inspiring when you notice the literal legion of players charging toward a target. That screenshot above isn't even the half of what I've seen in hunts on super active times.

So, when you see us talking about relics, or raids, or carnival, or Eureka, Bozja, etc, those are things that whenever you get there, people are still going to be doing plenty of. Between glamour, collectors, min-maxers, people leveling any number of jobs, and on and on and on, there are endless reasons for any give player to be doing content from today, and 10 years ago, on any given day, and just because you might be late to the party, doesn't mean you can't participate in all of it when you want!

EDIT: Obviously the shift from 1.0 to 2.0 was a massive amount of content that is gone; but aside from a relatively (relative to the sheer amount that is in the game right now) small amount of lore, the vast majority of players would agree that you're not missing much of anything. Most of the stuff that was worth keeping from 1.0, they kept. The further away the memories of 1.0 Black Shroud, the better we can all sleep at night.

EDIT2: There's sometimes seasonal events that might go a few years between returning (XV, DQ recently), so you might need to wait a year or two to get the XV car again, but those are rare exceptions. The only seasonal/collab event that I doubt will ever return is Garo one. The Yo-kai one has returned numerous times, and might again. I guess the Lightning Returns one has never repeated, and might not. They put all those things on the mogstation, so I'm guessing the latter.

The thing that sucks about aetherite tickets, is that there's one more thing you have to click through to teleport, and in heavy hunt trains, that can mean the difference between getting to the zone and waiting for the aetherite to clear out, and potentially missing a mark.

I wonder if putting them in a retainer or in the saddlebag gets rid of the confirmation, when you don't want to deal with it.

I was puzzled until I saw the shoulder pads on the char on the left monitor, then it all came together.
