So a bit of Stormblood + I created the East Asian Studies major at my undergrad, and my mom studies East Asian performance art styles:
Elezen Guy: I JUST SAW THE HOTTEST WOMAN AT THIS HINGAN PLAY!!!! ;-; IM IN LOVE
Me: that's an onnagata
Quest: all the actors are really evasive about it. this one male actor smells like the perfume the elezen was so enamored of
Me: that's an onnagata
The Actor: verbatim quotes a (translated) line from a Japanese text on Kabuki which states that Onnagata are better at being women than women, because men inherently understand what men want of women, therefore, on the stage, they can portray the perfect woman for a male audience*
*yes, this is multiple levels of bullshit, BUT, it's a quote from a primary source text
SPOILERS: he's an onnagata
Elezen Guy, to his credit: I AM EVEN MORE IN LOVE NOW ;-;
and for the SECOND TIME in the past two years, a game has made me sit back on my heels and ponder the uselessness of the major I established (the other game was Ghost of Tsushima)
short but personal stuff
the East Asian Studies major survived the axe-ing of the Music *and* Language majors (yes, ALL the Language majors, including Mandarin, which is especially galling because up until QUITE recently we had a sister school in mainland China)
the only reason was that every single EAS professor was cross-discipline (incl my mom; chair of theater arts dept, but her Asian Acting Styles class was a credit for said major [and yes, that was accurate, bc she covered Southeast Asian & East Indian styles alongside Chinese, Japanese, & Korean]) so like, you'd have your History prof, who happened to teach China in the 20th Century... so because it didn't have a dedicated dept, it wasn't costing them a perceived "more" money
Praetorium is great, tons of monologuing. I am much less of a fan of the other one, which is shorter but feels like a ton more work as you have to engage constantly.

i dont know what it is about this game that makes things like that feel SO good, and SO smooth to get right. it's the same feeling as when you perfectly time a snapshot aoe and move back in to gain uptime or just to look cool
I had one like that in Doma Castle just recently as DRG
that one long hallway of AoEs from the imperial guns, Elusive Jump'd out of one AoE, then immediately Spineshatter Dive to an enemy just as I land to avoid a second AoE, then Dragonfire Dive to *another* enemy, it was great.
I finally did Pandaemonium last night after deciding that I was going to make SMN my main for the time being. Everything went really well until the 4th encounter were I had some unfortunate deaths. I don't dislike any of the fights, unlike some of the ShB raids, so I'll likely make an effort to do them every week.
NGL a big reason I made SMN my main is how much I love my glamour. My MCH is a close second though. They're both just really fun to play. I feel kind of bad basically shelving my DRG after it being the job I played the Endwalker MSQ with, but DRG just isn't as fun to play right now as SMN or MCH.

This is going to be my last week of doing the full panda, unless I screwed up my calculations, I should get the last of the parts I need to have a second class geared out. Then it's just a matter of beating up the last nerd for a couple more weeks to get the drops to get a second weapon. I figure by the time I'm ready to gear out more classes than my ostensible main and the class I actually play there will probably be a different tier that you get in a different method.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

New tier won't be out for six-ish months, so you've got some time.

Oh no doubt, it's just that I'm not actually playing the other classes, and this current gear grind is involved enough I don't particularly care to engage in it beyond the classes I'm using. I'll probably just stick to leapfrogging all the other classes up into the tomestone gear while grinding out my weekly cap of them.

With more jobs being added with each expansion, the weekly capped tomestone system is showing its age. It shouldn’t be this artificially time-gated, especially since more and more people have second or third jobs that they’re interested in playing and keeping updated.

I don't really agree. One of the great things about FFXIV's endgame gear system is that the only thing you have to do to to start raiding is get crafted gear, then you just have to cap tomestones and raid. If you uncap that you kill a huge chunk of the crafting system and force people to grind out 490 in a couple of weeks.
It's unfortunate that it slows down gearing of alts, but it's a small cost for the best endgame gearing system in an MMO... period.
I wish there was something more interesting to spend poetics/aphorism on right now. There are some crafting materials you can get, but that market became largely irrelevant really fast.

Combining the ground targeting ones together to nail a flowing movement, and using a targeted gap closer to a moving target to end up way further away than the ability is supposed to go are both such excellent feelings.

Poetics I don't mind as they're the eternal source of leveling gear and have plenty of secondary uses for housing items and relic stuff.

I'm not necessarily talking about uncapping, but it'd be nice not to have the only efficient means of gathering tomestones be through expert/MSQ/Alliance roulettes.
But bribing players to engage in content that they wouldn't otherwise be interested in doing is bad. Everyone agreed it was bad when WoW had incentives for mythic raiders to do LFR every week, and it's just as bad when it's done for FF14, even though they're done for the same reasons (to basically serve as more meat for the grinder and keep queues short and players actually completing the content)
EDIT: Increasing the cap more consistently over time, in conjunction with increasing the amount gained for activities relative to the higher cap, as well as increasing the base amount for a number of activities that currently give tomestone rewards would be a good start without really running into your scenario, for instance,
I see Aphorism tomes as what I use to fill in slots that aren't 580 when I want/need the piece from the raid over the crafted piece but already got my drops for the week.
hunt trains are better tomes than dungeons anyway. I never run expert, haven't for a long time
From a time perspective? Absolutely not. With the current congestion with instance swapping, most organized hunt trains currently spend the majority of the time waiting, making it extremely inefficient from a tomestone perspective. Kill 2 marks, spend 5 minutes trying to go from instance 1 to instance 2, wait 3 more minutes, kill 2 marks, repeat. A full circuit takes 2-3 hours, is mostly just sitting there waiting to be told where to go, and you still won't cap. The benefit to hunt trains is that you get a lot of materia.

But Aphorism feels vestigial.
I’m actually kind of conflicted on this.
On one hand, it’s REAL nice not to need tomestones to craft pots. On the other hand, needing them gave them value, so dumping them felt good. Now it feels like a waste.

This may come up in future tiers, but in Shadowbringers, the current uncapped tomestone had materials that were required for crafting potions. The potion market is currently kind of fucked in that it's absolutely not worth it to craft any except for personal use. Because of the materials required and their potential uses in other recipes like crafted gear, most servers/datacenters have the raw materials as more valuable than the finished product. If they decide to re-institute potions requiring tomestone materials later, that'll always be a good fallback to just convert tomestones into cash.

got GNB to 90 and unlocked the 89 job gear coat that I've been eyeing off
It would go a long way if they took the poetics cap up to 4000. 2000 is really annoying, it's easy to go over cap and waste them, and 2000 isn't enough for a full set of gear + weapon.

IDK, I did a 32/32 EW one, the conductor just warned everyone upfront that it'd take a while, but we'd get through everything. We just slowly worked our way through instance 1,2,3 per zone with no worries. Because we did some S-ranks 3x in a row I also noticed a lot of players (me included) caught on to the gimmicks, so that was nice.
I've had more bad luck with roulettes (especially Alliance... I ended up in YorHa the other day...) than just a slow and steady train chuu chuu chugging along.
Estinien just gets to run around unsync'd at level 90 or whatever, eh? He just gets to one-shot an entire Imperial canon with a single Dragonfire Dive? :P
