When you hear your someone talking about how one was 7 carats and the others were 5 and 3 carats...and you don't realize your grandpa was talking about his passing the devils buckshot...well that leads to a hilarious misunderstanding.
There are definitely times when you can walk away from a thing you got for free feeling you overpaid.
This is true. You only have limited time, so everything you do costs you something.
And I was curious, so I looked up Godfall. Just reading about it makes me exhausted without even downloading it. When a trailer is already getting me anxious on the different game modes, loot options, and min-maxing, I know I should just pass.
Based on the "it's free" argument I downloaded it through the EGS, 48GB of it. It's not the full game, it's only the 'end-game' stuff. If you want to start the game at level 1 and experience the story you'll have to buy a different edition. The introduction animation made me immediately disinterested in the whole universe and story, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on much there.
Good news first: my dick is still firmly attached to my body.
After a short introduction mission in a golden temple (think Jupiter Ascending) you're dropped in the hub where you can buy different characters and get a bunch of purple level 50 loot. It took a while to equip everything because the game is definitely not made by someone who has stopped to think what makes a game like Diablo III or Path of Exile such a smooth experience.
The game is heavily combat focused and goes full out on flashy visual effects. The standard controls are a pain to handle (LB and LT for the two main attacks, for some reason) so it actually played better with mouse and keyboard because at least the attacks were placed on LMB and RMB. It does have options to change the controls, so definitely see if you can make it play more like a game you've muscle memory for. I tried to make it closer to how Hades handles, but it's just not as smooth as Hades. This might be less of a problem for people who are used to fast-paced combat cames.
Being a Gearbox game there is certainly a lot of loot that drops. Just... nearly all of it is a currency of some kind or an item that is just not as good as what you're wearing. The UI is also so very slow that it's a chore just to check what you picked up. Again: made by someone who doesn't get looter/shooters or hack-n-slashers.
I suppose the game was partly made as a tech demo for AMD video cards, so if you have a beast of a PC you might enjoy upscaling the resolution and go crazy with the graphics.
Definitely a bit like Warframe or Path of Exile, but just missing the point a bit. It doesn't help that {Stirling-voice} games as a live service {/Stirling-voice} are so deeply unappealing to me. I only give them a chance when there's a enthusiastic fan base or an option to just play the single-player campaign first. With this there isn't even a thread on the forums and the single player campaign is behind the paywall.

For any devs working on a hack-n-slash or looter/shooter, the point is that there's this loot, right? And loot has to be exciting. You gotta shoot down that monster and then something cool drops on the ground. Player has to recognize quickly what it is, and immediately figure out what use it has. Go play a fan-favorite and set a timer to see how many miliseconds it takes between the loot hitting the ground the player having figured out the use of it. It's nearly instant
Obviously the shooting, hacking and slashing has to be enjoyable and a bit challenging, but the rewards has to be just as satisfying as kicking that devil back to hell.

Honestly I have a triangle of quality for a good looter game. Loot, variety and something to strive for and a lot of different items for viability in end game also have some kind of alteration of basic gameplay that way I feel "Oh now my *blank* does this!", fun combat! Its where the player spends their time in the game make it fun! Also end game activities variety! If I'm stuck doing the same 4 activities I'm out this is boring you're boring.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
I'm guessing the sword one is the D&D streaming stuff and the top one is the racing stream stuff
No idea on bottom left tho
Sword in the open book is the cover drawing of Lexcalibur, Jerry's poetry book
Bottom left is the C-team logo, the weekly DnD game run by Jerry in the same universe as Acquisitions Incorporated.
