The best example from personal experience is chess. People think you have to be smart to play chess, or be good at chess. But you know what chess mainly is, what it actually is all the way up to the highest levels of play? It's mainly just pattern recognition. That is like, genuinely, 99% of what determines the outcome.

I don't know... I watched this chess anime on Netflix two years ago and it seems like the key to being good at the game is DRUGS

Tonight on AniMenagerie, @IronKnuckle's Ghost loses his damn mind watching the second part of the final Duel Kingdom duel between Yugi Moto and Maximillian Pegasus, with the activation of the Toon World card:

Fuckin toon world
I also love the flex, the fuckin nuts, of “yes I designed this card, it’s OP as fuck so it’s not in rotation, but I will use it in my deck”
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Also it's got to be an in-universe meme for whoever uses Pot of Greed to explain what it does. Everyone knows it, but you play the card you have to say the line or you get cancelled on Kaiba-Twitter. But that's not too bad because 90% of the world population is cancelled on Kaiba-Twitter since Kaiba hates everyone anyway and the rest don't use the app.

Look Yugi straight up cheats all the time so Pegasus is allowed his bullshit card.
Pegasus only cheats by looking at the enemy hand, which you still need to sus out their strategy and whatnot.
Yugi’s power literally lets him gain luck as his desperation grows and lets him pull the exact card he wants from the deck.
That’s right, canonically, the heart of the cards is cheating magic

I was obsessed with watching the anime as a child and as an adult i went back and read the entire manga (which isn’t that bad and is better / different than the anime)

Yeah about that
Basically 90% time they use Pot of Greed in the anime, it’s filler. It’s so they can draw extra cards that do nothing to the outcome of the duel and they can streeeeetch the battle longer than the manga.

This is part of why Arc-V actually genuinely kinda sucks. Because it's super reliant on having the Action Cards that are scattered all over the field, so duels are less about people doing conceivably cool things based on the actaul game, and more about litertal Plot Bullshit.
Which is saying something when the very next series has the protagonists special power being "Create the exact card i need!", and it's less infurating than Arc V's crap.
Also the most recent Yu-Gi-Oh series finished, and it ended with our heros fighting the villian in space.
IN a giant robot, powered by a curry-powered robot. The villain meanwhile had built his own giant robot that was... a duplicate of himself. it was deeply dumb, and curved right back around to awesome.

I just checked out the 200 page one-shot from the Chainsaw Man creator, Goodbye Eri, that's on Shonen Jump, and I think there's just something about their style that clicks for me. I think the one-shot particularly worked because it relies on you reading through it quickly to jumble up your emotions, and it can spend pages on setup and the creator's swings between minimalism and maximalism without having to cram discreet starting and ending points into 20-something pages. I loved Chainsaw Man, but I think long form work may suit them better. I don't know if it's something everyone will like but I think it's worth a read.

I liked how the pages that were essentially 4-koma were framed like they were literally the cellphone screen. Also how panels got blurry from time to time.

I realize that it would make the flow of action in a show worse
But not having a resource management component is what makes YGO a bad game
The lack of resource management isn't what makes YGO a bad game considering MTG does have it and it's still a bad game.

MTG is a good game.
Any game where you can draw a card and it does nothing interesting is a bad game. Hearthstone got one thing right by making mana increase automatically so all drawn cards have unique effects.

Buddy, I dunno what to tell you if you think Hearthstone is well designed.

I was playing the online version of the Pokemon TCG a few years back and dropped it when the meta shifted to "watch your opponent spend 4 minutes digging through their deck, until they have their full combo set up at the end of round 2 and you lose".

Yeah because the explicit words of "got one thing right" clearly indicates I hold the remainder in high esteem.
I said on Animenagerie last night that Colin Mochrie would rule in the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, because the rules are made up and the points don't matter.

Lol fair enough.
But resource draws are an important part of the balance, even if it isn’t ‘fun’ for you. It’s also not fun to draw a card that doesn’t effect the game at all!

good god you can't just say this to people
Yeah! I'm pretty sure when your prayer reached the Almighty They went "... Why have you forsaken Me?"
Probably because she was asked to talk about anime!
(OK ok, I'll stop.)

I mean they're all running Pot of Greed anyway.

No its ok I'm very grateful sometimes when I get started I can't work out how to stop its like figuring out how to stop spelling banananananadammit
What's Pot of Greed?
A demonstration of why letting players cheaply fuck with the action economy is a Bad Idea.
Pot of greed lets me draw two new cards into my hand!
