The 1:1 conversion still works though. When your gpu sub ends, just pay for Gold, sub to gpu for a month, it turns all your Gold into the same amount of gpu, immediately turn off recurrent billing for gpu.
Now you've saved a pile of money. 75 for one year instead of 180. Or 195 for 3 full years.
edit- With the purchase of Activision-Blizzard Microsoft has shown Sony they are willing to drop obscene amounts of money to acquire one of the Big Three. The implicit threat is that Microsoft can do it again. It all comes down to how many zeros they need to write and Microsoft can afford to write a lot of zeros.
Someone pointed out around the time of the announcement that currently the chance of Microsoft being challenged by antitrust laws is pretty low because even combined with ABK the Xbox brand trails third behind Sony and Tencent in terms of overall revenue.
I don't see this scenario being likely in the foreseeable future because toothless as the FTC is at this time, Microsoft making another purchase of this scale would absolutely push the needle up into a potential legal burden that would be more trouble than its worth
Also, there was a Forbes article (edit: I think it was Forbes...might've been Business Insider) I was reading when this was announced that basically said this won't get challenged by way of antitrust laws. The short version was that the way monopoly laws get triggered is by horizontal acquisitions (the purchasing of a direct competitor). ABK isn't a direct competitor to Microsoft, so it's a vertical acquisition. If Microsoft were to even attempt to purchase Sony outright, that would be monopolistic.

Problem is Justice would normally look at this, but current Justice lead is a former Microsoft employee - so he might have to recuse which means it would go over to the FTC, which is headed by Lina Khan who is more more interested in putting the kibosh on giant tech companies.

Of note, Forbes and Business Insider are both literally now just blog aggregators. So when you see something on forbes.com, it's not "an article from a respected publication", it's "some dude on the interwebs with a blog".
I believe their print arms are still fairly sensible/edited, but the online presence is... Iffy.

Does this work for someone who has done this once before? I did this trick once and my subscription is going to end in a few months.

Yep, just did it a few months back after my initial 2 years was up.
Just make sure your gpu sub is actually ended before you start adding the gold sub codes.
I just buy a couple 3 month cards when they hit half off every now and again. That plus the various conversions, EA Access merger, etc etc has me good for years.
Edit: Also I never let anything lapse because I like it when "how long you've been subscribed for" keeps going up. Not because "subscription" but because "number get bigger ha ha".

I can also confirm this works. I'm subscribed through October 2024 for a total of about $150 thanks to sales on Xbox Live Gold cards back in November. Basically, I bought two 1-year cards and one 6-month card. I applied those to my Xbox account. Two of them actually gave me 2 bonus months if I turned on autopay (which I immediately turned off). Then subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate for $1. It immediately converted everything over 1:1.
I’m definitely Microsoft’s favourite kind of customer, I’m too lazy to do anything like that and just pay the monthly fee automatically.
I use my Bing rewards (Microsoft rewards? Whichever one It’s called now) to get my GPU. And at times I let it run out and I get some XBL gold and then startup GPU again. Not sure when they will stop allowing you to transfer Gold to GPU 1:1 when your GP is out, but as long as they do I don’t mind using it that way. Besides, I haven’t really paid anything for it since the first month GPU started… doing searches and the weekly rewards on Xbox has been more than enough to get my monthly sub going - I’m even a few months ahead.

My GP is currently completely free until October now since I won one of MN's giveaways. And since I typically get ~£1.50 a month in MS funbux/Bing Rewards/Whatever from playing GP titles, 'technically' they're 'paying' me to play games at this point.

Through some alignment of the stars I was able to get an Xbox Series X. I was wondering about some must get games for it. I already got Gears 5 and Halo: The Master Chief Collection but any others out there? Also any games for a 14 year old daughter who enjoys Sims 4 but who was overwhelmed by Game Pass so had no clue else to get?

Zoo Tycoon if she's got any interest in animals.

The obvious choices for a kid are Minecraft, Terraria, Stardew Valley. 14 is a bit older, maybe something like Gang Beasts, Human Fall Flat, Cluster truck.

GotG is pretty solid.
... And just pretty. Feels like a good showcase of the series graphics power.

Not the same as the Sims, but she might really like Undertale, Stardew Valley, Screamride (Roller coaster tycoon-esque), Slime Rancher, or if all else fails, Minecraft. I can't vouch for them being any good since I haven't played, but there's also Skatebird which is about tiny birds skateboarding or Pupperazi, which is about taking pictures of dogs.
Back to some more down to earth news, there's a rumor that another Xbox franchise is getting the "Master Chief Collection" treatment (speculated to be either Gears of War or Fable) and man.. remember Gears of War? Two years ago it was like one of Microsoft's biggest franchises and now.. does it even rate compared to what they've picked up?
I mean, I'd totally get a Marcus Fenix collection (well, I guess I'd get it on Gamepass) but I'm a loony.

the first Gear of war got a remaster a few years back, and they're still making content for Gears 5 (at least they were last time I checked)
Fable on the other hand hasn't received any kind of treatment like that at all. I'd personally rather see the 3 fable games get some sort of re-release treatment.
We know they're working on a Fable 4, so maybe a Fable Master Chief Collection this year and then Fable 4 hits in 2023?
(also I now just want to call every compilation the Master Chief collection. Maybe one day we'll get somethign like Wolfenstein: The Master Chief Collection)
Fable 1 did get remade but other than that it's been long time since a mainline entry. They had that canceled Moba type game, and now supposedly a reboot of sorts is in the works.
I think Gears would sell better but I'd love an updated Fable 2 with not shitty co-op
On one hand, Fable 4 is due out in the next couple of years (in theory) so a Fable collection would be a good way to stir up interest.
On the other hand, it sounds like the next Gears of War is ??? away, so doing a collection now is a good way to keep active interest in the franchise around for a another year or so.
Like, honestly they should do both, but there's only so many devlopers to go around.

I think the main things that's caused Gears 6 development to be taking its time is 1) Unreal Engine 5, 2) COVID and 3) The branching story choice they put in towards the end of the game
Sales-wise, Gears Forza and Halo were never franchises that would match multiplatform titles like Call of Duty, GTA and Minecraft, but the same is true for most all first party tentpole franchises for console manufacturers

Nobody Saves the World is a respectable Zelda-y thing. TBH though, if she's got any interest in "poke around and try stuff", I would let her! I've found a good few pleasant times by doing that. Superliminal, NStW, Unpacking, a very pixely building game I just can't recall the name of (overhead/isometric, so not Terraria or anything), all small/interesting.
I'd actually recommend Superliminal regardless. I had bought it a while before it hit Game Pass, and it was honestly a very pleasant game. Portal-y, but very much its own thing I thought.

I'd argue that most--though not all--multiplatform games tend to run better on Xbox Series X, which should automatically include them. Even something like Kingdom Hearts 3 basically runs the same, albeit with a better framerate than the last generation, but the multi-game quick resume feature means you get to play it faster. So stuff like Tetris Effect, Minecraft, Streets of Rage 4 (assuming you don't mind the absurd difficulty scaling), Outer Wilds, Spelunky 2, etc.
Ori 2 is extremely popular as far as "infuriating difficult 2D platformers" go, or is that just me? At least it looks amazing.
Forza Horizon 5 is a very fun open-world racing game, if either of you are into that. Also it's almost unrealistically beautiful.
Flight Simulator is literally the best flight simulator ever put onto a home console, on top of being really good looking (right until you decide to drive your plane down your neighborhood's main street, because it's modeled in game). But it's also got a very steep learning curve.
People like Tell Me Why, but keep in mind it's entirely story-driven with not necessarily much in the way of "gameplay", but it's probably also accessible for a child or teen, and has a rather wholesome if occasionally "real" plot? I'm not good at describing that particular variety of rural Americana. Also it looks pretty good.

Audible are really aggressive with it, I've gotten a bunch of free books over the years. Though Xbox has a much more captive audience.
