So I'll admit, this one was me bein' a little bit of a stinker. Pac-Man 2 is not a game with a sterling reputation, and if we're gonna put a game with "Pac-Man" in its title on the list then I can think of at least 3 more obvious choices than The New Adventures. I knew this one was getting sniped the second someone had the chance.

    But hear me out.

Pac-Man 2 is a weird fuckin' game. Not least of which because its English title is Pac-Man 2. Calling this the official follow-up to an arcade game about a circle that eats smaller circles is buck fuckin' wild. It feels more like the adaptation of a Pac-Man cartoon, except it has like, nothing in common with the actual Pac-Man cartoon that they made. You could've even called it Pac-Land 2 and that would have made more sense. But no. At least here in America, this is the official sequel to Pac-Man.

Pac-Man 2 is a weird fuckin' game. But also? Video games are a weird fuckin' medium, and I think Pac-Man 2 does a pretty incredible job of highlighting and exploring this through its mechanics. It's a very meta game, but in a subtle, non-flashy way. A similar game might feel pretentious or navel-gazey, but PM2 wraps this meta stuff up in a slapstick Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic that makes it easy to overlook entirely.

On its face, the game is a point-and-click adventure. You use a cursor to draw attention to certain areas on the screen, and Pac-Man interacts with them. Except, your cursor is not abstract and intangible. It's a slingshot you use to fire pellets into the scene. You're not just clicking on objects in the environment, you're hitting them, which carries a wide variety of consequences. You can break objects, knock down items, or annoy people. Cursors in normal adventure games are abstract. They sort of represent your character's attention, what they're drawn to and what they're focusing on. Here, it's a physical thing that interfaces with the game world in a very material way.

You are also, very crucially, not playing as Pac-Man. Your player character is you, the player, aiming this slingshot around. Pac-Man is the protagonist of the game but he is also a third party. You can't control him, you can only direct him. A crucial mechanic of the game is managing Pac-Man's mood. Some things will make him too scared to advance. Some things will piss him off. Some things will make him feel cocky and arrogant and cause him to overlook danger. Some things will make him so depressed that his only response to any prompting at all just makes him curl up in a ball and cry. Instead of controlling Pac-Man, you have to work together with him in order to solve the game's puzzles. Sometimes when exploring a space you'll end up accidentally upsetting him. Sometimes something will so completely capture his attention that he'll ignore you, even at his own peril. Throughout the game, you and Pac-Man will butt heads. At times, he'll regard you like an obnoxious hanger-on that he can't get rid of, who constantly fucks up his life. Other times, you'll tear your hair out that he's too depressed to progress in the game, in fact he's too depressed to even eat, even though you know for a fact that eating will cheer him up because that's how the mood system works. You'll get mad at each other. You'll laugh at each other. But then other times, You'll laugh together. You'll solve puzzles together. You'll fail or succeed at the game together.

I think this shit's fuckin' brilliant, and gets overlooked for being wildly ahead of its time because it's in a bizarre adventure game spin-off that is admittedly a bit obtuse and clunky at times. Because what's happening here is Pac-Man 2 is making explicit something that is true of every video game, or at least every video game in which you control a singular player character. It is exploding out what is ordinarily a nearly invisible layer of interface between player and player character, and examining how that layer influences our relationship to the game. Every time you get hit in Dark Souls because you over-committed to a heavy attack? That's Pac-Man 2. Every time you have a sequence in a prestige action game where you have to limp around at a quarter of your normal movement speed because of story reasons? That's Pac-Man 2. Every moment of "ludonarrative dissonance" where you use your controller to force a character to do something that they would never do themselves, either to advance the game or just to fuck around? That's Pac-Man fuckin' 2, baby. It's playing in a similar space to games like Metal Gear Solid 2 or Bioshock, but it never gets even half the credit despite taking the concept much further than any of its conceptual cousins. Raiden can get a cold and sneeze, and he can get too embarrassed by his nudity to hold a gun; meanwhile, just look at how fucking huge Pac-Man's sprite sheet is to cover all the different moods and behaviors he can shift through:

    nb2ggxipaeod.png

Pac-Man's animations are astoundingly varied for a single Super Nintendo character; I'd be pretty impressed even today if a game character had this many unique animations. They use the full palette of animation to warp his face, his posture, and his body to put just a ton of character into every sprite, and they have so many goofy, surprising gags throughout the game that put all this animation to incredible use. In some ways they almost do too good of a job emulating a Saturday morning cartoon; I think part of why a lot of this gets dismissed is that it ends up feeling too reminiscent of a lame spin-off cartoon, which really isn't fair to the quality of animation, the innovation of the game design, and the basic fact that this is a fucking crazy game to make on like every possible level

Pac-Man 2 is a disrespected work of art that deserves much more credit and praise than it's ever gotten and somebody else should put it back on the list.

Also, you can play Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man inside of it and those are both pretty great.

We've reached the point where I think we need to start thinking globally, so I'm dipping in to my bag of influential fan-translated games

Removing Dr Mario and Puzzle League (there are better games of this kind)

Adding Mizzurna Falls, the game that would uh, somewhat inspire deadly premonition

Ooooooo man. Saints Row 2 is really something special, though. I don't know how I feel about using the DS version either.

While I agree that the SNES version is the most iconic, the DS version adds content that got cut or was partially finished, has the PSX cutscenes (skippable) but with no loading times since it's on a cart.

    Plus it is portable!

It's the most complete version of Chrono Trigger.

I actually prefer the 2004 version of Sid Meier's Pirates! to the older one.

@Daypigeon , I request that you explain your shocking decision to replace ZoE2 with the GBA SRPG spinoff.

I'm glad Undertale and Melee are on the list now, they needed to be. Also glad for the presence of Kentucky Route Zero.

My problem here is that I haven't played a lot of the games on the list, and can't in good conscience delete some game I've never played and say the one I have played is better.

I'm trying to center on the idea that just because a game is in a genre I am miserable at doesn't mean it's a bad game.

I would add Zoids Legacy for GBA before adding Fist of Mars.

Which was a perfectly okay SRPG with some unique combat stuff but not what I'm looking for when I'm looking for some High Speed Robot Action.

Honestly I don't care what music instrument rhythm game gets on here. But there should be one.

I prefer Rock Band over Rock Band 3 since it started everything, though guitar hero probably deserves a mention.

I am in the business of saving lives.

Replacing the Outer Wilds with the Outer Worlds would be the troll move of the century.

Guitar Hero should be there on a top 100, but being a top 50 we have to be economical with these things.

I did love both of them dearly.

Removing Majora's Mask and Adding Link to the Past. I just can't get into MM and prefer top down Zelda.

    Remove: Ico
    Add: Persona 4

Don't know that we need Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. P4 was the first jurp that clicked for me in adulthood. I'd been tracking my recent Final Fantasy excursions back to loving FF7R, but I wouldn't have given FF7R the time of day if Persona 4 hadn't opened my heart to jurps. It has elements that have aged terribly (and other elements that sucked shit for the time), but big ups to the mystery teens who let me into a whole genre.

Remove Rock Band, add Rock Band 3

it's basically the same game but with more features, the keyboard is cool and so are the "pro" drums and guitar

    Similarly,
    Remove Hitman (2016)
    Add Hitman 3

On PC. I tried 360, Xbox1 and PS4 controllers, no luck. Tried through regular, big picture mode, three third party controller programs.

It even would recognise if I hit the system button to open up Steam, but whenever I was in the menus it wouldn't register any button presses but that.

I thought about doing this because RB3 is more features and you can still add all the songs from 1 and 2

I liked the single player elements of 1 and 2 the best, but it is really a party game you play with other folks so I'm happy to leave RB3 up there.

    RB4 was very disappointing.
