It's specifically the list of the 50 best games of all time as of page 100 of this thread.

So there is a zero percent chance Guild Wars: Factions would ever make it onto any community sourced best 50 games of all time list, but now that's it's been bumped off I guess here is where I type up my eulogy for the best combat system in any tab target MMO, ever.

Guild Wars 1 released 6 months after that other MMO that some people might have heard of, and the contrast in design philosophy between it and WoW could not be more obvious. It was like the team looked at every single design element that people said they loved about WoW and said, "ok, but why though?" Huge, sprawling open world, where hundreds of players could interreact? Nope, GW1 was purely instance based, and the only other players that you would ever see outside of towns were those that you yourself invited to your party. Sprawling dungeons and raids to explore and conquer? Eh, kind of but not really? There were instanced story missions that functioned as dungeons, and a few endgame PvE environments that you could farm if you really wanted. Robust gear progression system with rare, farmable loot drops? Nah, loot in GW1 was straightforward to acquire and, outside of a few edge cases, rarer pieces barely had any effect on character power level.

So uh, what did one actually do in Guild Wars? If the loot kinda sucked, the dungeons were whatever, and the world was completely instanced, what was the point? Why, you teamed up and killed the living shit out of each other, of course.

Guild Wars PvP was, by far, the most fun I've ever experienced in an online game, because the Guild Wars combat system and organized PvP modes were literally decades ahead of it's time: an insane hybrid of DOTA/LoL style teamfights and objective control mixed with Magic the Gathering style deckbuilding (and yes, I am aware of how toxic this comparison sounds). On the surface it was simple, your character had a primary class + secondary class, could assign stat points, and got to equip 8 skills to carry into battle. But this 8 skill limitation was where things got a bit nutty. There were around 140 skills per class, and your character could equip any skill from either their primary or secondary class, so the number of valid builds for a single class combination was frankly insane. Maybe you're a Mesmer/Necromancer, a fairly common combination for midline support caster types. You might be running a typical support build with few interrupts, maybe a snare (+ a DOT to "cover" the snare so a healer couldn't immediately clear it with a single debuff clear spell), a mana drain skill and 1-2 direct damage spells to snipe low health targets. Just your typical annoying support, fucking with healers and disabling damage dealers depending on what's needed at the time. Or maybe you only went Mesmer to put more points into a single energy drain type skill, and really you're just spamming necro spells to summon a minion army before sending them at the other team to explode. Or you're the team buffer, hiding in the backline while you buff your frontline warriors to deal stupid amounts of damage. Or, surprise, it's you who is the primary spike damage dealer, and you throw out random cheap DOTs to distract the healers before picking out a target and bringing them 100-0 in less than half a second with a shatter hex + phantom pain combo.

And because Guild Wars PvP was primarily 8 players vs 8 players, now do this for 64 skills instead of just 8. The sheer number of broken combinations and fun strategies you could run was staggering. You had stuff like Spirit Spam, where a group of rangers would just cover an area in nature spirits that buffed each other + the team + exploded on command to destroy anyone who dared approach (fun aside: this build was popularized by the Kansas City Hopsteppers, the PA forum guild. It would eventually get nerfed significantly for being one of the most toxic things in the game lmao). You had various spike builds such as earth spike or ranger spike, where the team would run a bunch of defensive utility classes with a few damage skills each, and then pick a target and time a count down in voice chat before unleashing all their damage skills at the same time, bringing the target from 100% to 0% HP in a fraction of a second. It became a game of "can their healers scout out our spike and land a .25 second full heal by noticing how our characters turn towards the target," with each side trying to stop the other from executing their own gameplan. You had stuff like Bunny Thumpers, which involved a bunch of hammer wielding beastmaster spec Rangers with pets, alongside a group of hex spreading mesmers and necro, where the goal was to simply overwhelm the other side with too many hexes, bleeds, and chained stun locks until they collapsed. And of course you had the prototypical "balanced" build, which ran 2-3 DPS warriors, 2 healers, 2-3 support casters/rangers and 1 flag runner, aiming to have enough disruption, pressure, and damage to handle an 8v8 fight, while also being able to easily split into two groups of 4 and focus on map control/sniping objectives vs teams that relied heavily on having all 8 players together.

Guild Wars PvP was a delightful playground, and strategies and counter strategies were constantly developing due to a robust ladder system and an observer mode that let you watch high rank games in progress (this was frankly huge in 2005). And because there was no real grind to get to endgame, you could experiment at will. All you had to do was unlock each skill by learning it from a trainer or finding it in the wild once, and afterwards you could instantly create a max level PvP character with perfect gear for any class you wanted, as much as you wanted. I lost probably thousands of hours of my life just coming up with random stupid ideas and testing them out in halls/Guild vs Guild matches, meeting some very good friends along the way who I still talk to today.

Eventually, of course, all things come to an end, and while Guild Wars: Factions was imo the high water point of the game, it just couldn't quite sustain the same highs over the next expansions and into Guild Wars 2 (which is an entirely different game and never really clicked for me). Part of it was just a lack of a playerbase (WoW kicked it's ass sales wise and the high end PvP scene suffered from a lack of new players), part of it was just the inevitable system bloat that always happens with these types of game. But as much as I love modern MMOs like FFXIV, it is a very different experience, and nothing has really ever matched the sheer joy of experimentation and competitive play I found in Guild Wars 1.

Edit: I see that in the time it took me to write this up, everyone somehow overlooked/miscopied the post that actually removed Guild Wars: Factions.

So uh, consider this a preemptive defense for when someone else notices that it got cut for Stardew Valley a few pages back.

The List is definitely representative of PAs more discerning taste, though. Certainly much more thoughtful.

There's a handful of games here that I think need to get knifed but I'm going to wait and see how the dust settles before adding more of my own.

I mean I have stuff I'd like to see on there, I just don't want to be posting once a page when other people still want to make changes.

With ZoE2 I don't agree with swapping it for Fist of Mars, but I'm genuinely glad that Daypigeon actually had some love for the game and it wasn't just a joke, which is initially what I thought.

I played through Fist of Mars because I legitimately wanted to get more of the story but for me I come to ZoE for the action primarily and the story second.

    Remove: Persona 4

Pooro made a heartfelt argument for this one and I enjoyed it, but it is also one of the rare JRPGs I didn't 100% and I'd rather keep many of the other RPGs on the list.

    Add: Starcraft

A tremendous hit both with the single-player campaign and online competitive modes.

    Just of note:

Dead Cells had already been axed for Metal Gear Solid 3 (?!?) before Hades was added.

So if Hades is gonna get added you gotta axe something else.

Might I suggest Metal Gear Solid 3.

Dual Strike remains my definitive Advance Wars game. Days of Ruin was so far away from what I wanted from an Advance Wars game that I don't think I made it more than halfway through the campaign and I beat the previous three on both normal and hard modes. I left it on the list myself because I recognize that other people really liked it but I won't be sad to see it go.

There are several changes I would make in terms of choosing one particular game from a franchise over the one listed here. Monster hunter world/Iceborne over rise, dark souls 1 over 2, Diablo 3 over 2, ocarina of time over link to the past, etc.

That's the wildest thing I've ever heard. The story in Diablo 3 is so bad the writers must have had literal hams for hands.

Yeah but it's actually fun to play so...

I am looking forward to reading people's heartfelt love for the niche games they've posted, assuming this doesn't turn into a troll circle jerk. Weirdly enough I think I have more trust in the community.

Days of Ruin is a game about how the remnants of the state are so terrified of armed collectivists that they'll nuke a single guy to prevent the message from being spread

Also on a more technical sense the map design is the peak of the series, the soundtrack whips, and the characters have actual motivations

I was a little down on dual strike just because it was too easy. you built up a dual strike, then you won.

2 really refined 1 in a good way

Everyone give me two minutes to get the list back so people don't have to go to the last page. In the future if you're quoting the list to talk about it lets put it in spoilers so people can't get mixed up?

I loved Dual Strike, it's definitely my favourite in the series.

Also I do agree that while the story of Diablo 3 is complete trash, it does feel great to play.

I was about to do this but since you're already on it I'll hold out. Separately, in general, I recommend saving a draft and then refreshing the page before posting to check that nobody posted something new before you.

    Wtf is pipe dream?

Man there is no way Pokemon go belongs on that list. It is a blatant money grab and despite how much fun my family and I have had playing it, it does not belong.

Removed: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles)
    Added: Sonic the Hedgehog 2

I always preferred Sonic 2 to the other classic Sonic games. I could be swayed to Sonic Mania. Besides, S3&K is two separate games masquerading as a single game, like two children in a trench coat, and is thus invalid.

I'm surprised there are no Mario platformers added yet.
