The Daily Wordle Thread

edited March 2022 in Debate and/or Discourse
Hey everyone it's the daily wordle! The place where we post inscrutable squares and try to not spoil one another while also talking about our guesses.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

Math, statistics, blind guesswork - tell us your strategy!

How to Share Your Wordle Grid
After finish your attempt, you'll get a screen that offers you a share button. Click this, and it'll put your grid squares into your clipboard. From there you can paste it directly into the comment!
4mr5asezbd2g.png

If you close the results box or lose it, you can safely refresh the page, or return to the link, from the same browser and it'll give you the share button again.

Hard Mode
On the page settings, you can turn on Hard Mode, which requires you use successful guesses in your subsequent attempts. Hard mode does make it harder! Observe puzzle 200 (pg1) or 209 (pg19-20) for great examples of why.

Thread Meta / Etiquette
If you're posting your guess sequence, please put it in spoilers! Likewise comments on the day's puzzle.
Wordle rolls over at 00:00 local time, and those of you who live in the future have been very kindly double-spoilering your puzzles. The US players thank you for that!

    Throwing this out there early:

Many people on the forum are color-blind, and cannot easily differentiate yellow from green.

Even if you do it normal, consider flipping to color-blind mode before hitting the "Share" button so you get the blue/orange layout.

I got an excellent starter this time, but after the first round my followup was bad (including repeating a terminal letter without noticing it was marked wrong), so 6 tries total.

I've been liking 'stain' and 'orate' as openings, since common letters help narrow things down.

    TRULY
    SMOKE/SPOKE depending on my mood.

Usually pull quite a few letters off those first two.

I'm going to stick with with STERN or RENTS for that strong Wheel of Fortune opener. Until I get burned completely on it...

Definitely luck, but still, eat it

I haven't tried it yet, but I've been thinking about what starting word to go with and I might see how far "rages" gets me.

ok can't stop thinking on wordle

doing some analysis to try and improve my game using a list of all 5-letter scrabble words
there are 9330 words in this list, i wish i could be getting word frequency data but that seems a lot harder to come by for free
this should at least cover all likely wordle answers

    top 5 most frequent letters are s, e, a, o, and r
    followed by i, l, t, n, u, d, c, y

'AROSE UNLIT' would be quite the start

if you want to hit up consonants first (which might be a better choice as its easier to guess at vowels) you could do 'TIRLS' or 'ROTLS' to start, followed by 'CANDY' which gets you the first 8 consonants and a few vowels

however, true players play hard mode so you can't blast off two unrelated words, and you might want to shoot for start or end letters

s is by far the most common ending letter: it has 2900 to second-place y at 988, but I suspect these are mainly plurals and are unlikely as a wordle answer... I can't find a list of past answers to analyze. this is fine though, because s is also the most common starting letter at 1112 vs 708 for c (of all letters)

so if you want to quick check for s and y, while keeping the other top consonants, the ultimate starting guess is 'SURLY'
then just prioritize t, n, and d probably... 'ANTED' if you completely whiff on surly.

    my count data:
    total letter freq:
    [('s', 4829), ('e', 4756), ('a', 4188), ('o', 3130), ('r', 3025), ('i', 2761), ('l', 2517), ('t', 2402), ('n', 2120), ('u', 1797), ('d', 1781), ('c', 1556), ('y', 1481), ('p', 1465), ('m', 1413), ('h', 1277), ('g', 1172), ('b', 1142), ('k', 1022), ('f', 816), ('w', 717), ('v', 505), ('z', 271), ('x', 221), ('j', 200), ('q', 86)]

    starting letter:
    [('s', 1112), ('c', 708), ('b', 647), ('p', 616), ('t', 602), ('a', 534), ('d', 484), ('m', 484), ('r', 453), ('g', 452), ('f', 447), ('l', 430), ('h', 360), ('w', 311), ('k', 238), ('n', 220), ('e', 210), ('o', 193), ('v', 178), ('j', 145), ('u', 132), ('i', 125), ('y', 112), ('z', 65), ('q', 59), ('x', 13)]

    ending letter:
    [('s', 2900), ('y', 988), ('e', 979), ('d', 608), ('r', 549), ('t', 507), ('a', 423), ('n', 392), ('l', 360), ('h', 276), ('o', 254), ('k', 196), ('i', 180), ('m', 134), ('p', 125), ('c', 101), ('g', 100), ('f', 58), ('x', 50), ('b', 41), ('w', 41), ('u', 39), ('z', 24), ('q', 3), ('v', 2)]

    quoting because it's cool

    hmm

I don't know that consonants-first makes sense; there's a lot more consonants than vowels, and getting position information earlier in Wordle is relatively more valuable (green much more than yellow). A lot of consonants to cover.

AUDIO, ADIEU, or OUTIE first and then freeforming the second word based on the response may be good

maybe RULES, LURES, LEIUS, ALOES, EUROS, or UREAS to quickly lock in an ending S, over AROSE (for that reason I am also leaning toward RENTS over STERN)

Data-wise I suppose the optimization is the speed of reducing the space when identifying if a letter exists or if a letter exists at that position

    discussion including today's answer:
yeah I almost struck out because I spent the first three guesses fishing for consonants

    SURLY
    SATED
    SCONE
    SIEVE
    SIEGE

though going vowel first also kind of sucks on this one, you pull out an I and an E and you're not any closer to finding SIEGE

anyways I biffed today's, that blue in space 2 was the same letter each time cause I wasn't paying attention

Ive started using ACRES and I feel that it is pretty strong

The S last feels critical to me in eliminating a huge amount of words and the E also feels good (for -ED and -ER). Id probably prefer a different letter than C but having A in the mix is good and A as a first letter is fine, I am not sure I can do better without writing a program to tell me what to do.

If I could change the A to an O maybe that would give me better options than C, I could do AR- or OR-

I just wanna play ARIES ffs

    quoting because it's cool

    (mild spoilers for Wordle 200)
and, lo and behold, featuring even more guessing-the-consonant today:

I had a quiet morning so I did some crunching on 8900+ Scrabble-legal five letter words and then put together a table showing their frequency in the first through fifth spot on the board. I think from my analysis the best first word to play (hoping for a direct hit on letters) is CORES. That being said, my strategy over the last week has been to try to eliminate all vowels and as many "wheel of fortune" consonants, but maybe I'll poke around with my list when I try to solve today's puzzle. Also, I find myself self-imposing Hard Mode even though I have the option turned off and I have no idea why.

Also for reference, the most common bigrams (2 letter pairs) in the English language are the following in descending order (caveat: this is for all words, not just 5 letter words): th, he, in, en, nt, re, er, an, ti, es, on, at, se, nd, or, ar, al, te, co, de, to, ra, et, ed, it, sa, em, ro.

edit: fixed some conditional formatting to only highlight top 5 hits

I go with STARE or RATES for the first word, as it covers the most common letters. After guess 2 I got lucky, because there's at least one more word it could have been. At that point it's less "figure out the word" as it is "consider how devious the designers are feeling right now."

If A is ranked above O, wouldn't it be CARES?

I didn't realize S was more common than vowels are. AROSE would hit the top 5 letters but you're more likely to get yellows than greens, hmm.

Changing my Wordle strategy. Rather than starting with common letters, I'm trying to burn through all the weird ones first.
I was trying to come up with 5 words that test all the letters then making a hail mary for #6, maybe this is the key?

    Squib
    Xylem
    Chord
    Gnaws
    ...Ftzpj?

    Alas.

I'm going to try hard mode tomorrow, I think it might have actually saved me a guess or two today.

Oh yeah, I'm dumb. CARES is probably the meta opener for direct hits. If you don't mind guessing double letters on your first word, SALES is pretty good too (the L in the 3 spot is ranked #6 and if an L is present in the word it is pretty likely to be in that spot) and the rest are all the number one occurrence.

Another insight, the 2nd letter is very frequently going to be a vowel (70% of the time), and if it isn't it'll most likely be an R.

The thing about R second is that it tells you to guess a vowel for first letter and probably a vowel for third, youre trying to shrink the solution space as fast as possible, not necessarily find letters. Reducing the span of possibilities of a letter from 26 to 5 is a lot better than knowing a consonant exists somewhere in the word, I think, vowel positions are key.
