In the TCG at least you can put energies on things and so on in exchange for not being able to attack or play supporters. In my Terapagos deck I don't mind going first because by my second turn I'm going to be swinging for 200 so making it so that the opponent can't really evolve before the turtle punches start is often useful.

In the pocket version far as I can tell they literally just removed even the small advantages going first has in the TCG, though, so it's just going second with extra steps.

They've never addressed how bad going first is in the TCG it's a weird oversight

Well, there are decks that are fine with it, primarily stuff using evolutions as their main attackers. Its also good for some control effects (Klefki shuts Ogerpon engines down hard, so going first gives you a chance to search it up).

But by default... yeah, second is usually better because supporters and first attack.

Got my 5 consecutive wins in using a mix of my Marowak EX/Primape/Dugtrio deck and my Weezing/Greninja deck.

The Weezing/Greninja deck continues to be very fun, and is prettier now that I've gotten enough of the Greninja promo cards to get some nice Flair. It does struggle with Pikachu EX decks, which kept popping up to end my streaks, but it's hilariously effective against most other meta decks. It absolutely bodies Mewtwo EX decks.

I got a five streak and was like aw, kind of no real reason to do this now.

But then I realized, the point is to break other people’s streaks, and I have been having a good time doing that now. Bwahahahaha

The person I beat to get my 5 was someone who was displaying their 5-streak Emblem. It made the victory even sweeter, especially because they conceded after I only had one point but was very obviously set up to wipe two Pokemon in the next turn.

I constructed a Lapras EX/Starmie EX/Gyarados deck. Got my first turn one Lapras EX + Misty victory. It felt mean! Thankfully it was against someone else who also had the 5-win emblem so at least I didn't end a streak that way.

I did have my first rage-quit though. Instead of conceding they just closed the app and didn't come back before the timer kicked them. I have to imagine that was the fifth game for them.

They have gotta add an in-game way to report people. Still seeing people with misspelled racial slurs as their display names, a long with the people who intentionally take the maximum amount of time possible for each of their turns to troll.

I’m so close to getting the mew card, I’m missing like five cards, between the mewtwo and charizard packs. Salazzle continues to elude me

  • CruorCruor Registered User regular
You don't need Salazzle for the Mew card. All you need is some variant (EX cards count) of all of the original 150 Kanto Pokemon. I got it a few days ago, after not having Raichu and Golem for the longest time. I got lucky with a Wonder Pick for Raichu and then spent pack points to grab Golem. Now I need to get the immersive art cards for Mewtwo and Pikachu to get the hidden immersive art card mission.

What are thoughts on the mini set? Just open free packs and save pack hourglasses?

I’ve been saving hourglasses for it for a bit because at 212/226 of Genetic Apex collected, the odds of getting anything new from opening a pack are vanishingly low.

Also trying to save my wonder picks for packs where I need two cards, but those are becoming increasingly scarce as well.

I am at 221 and finally got Mew today. Have had that extra month NZ soft launch but have spent zero money. Just opening 2 - 3 packs a day and spending 150 points on the needed kanto pokemon, when accrued.
Am still missing gardevoir and 4 exs venusaur, articuno, gengar and wigglytuff.

Celebi EX + Serperior is really cool when it works well. You definitely wanna have some options in there for when you have awful luck drawing the combo. Exeggutor EX is a good choice for low energy investment, decent damage, and high HP.

I think it's a little weird that you pretty much always want two of every card for your decks, but the UI is all about getting one of every card. When you open a pack, if it's new there's a little *new* and it goes in the pokedex, but nothing for your second. I was pretty happy when I got my second Celebi EX, because that made my grass deck really strong, but the UI acted as if it was just a boring duplicate. Wonderpick points out new cards, but not cards you only have one of. You can wishlist cards you don't have, but you can't wishlist a card you have one of. If you have two Charizard EXs but only one Charmeleon, you'd probably really want a second.

And if your business model is "Make people want cards so they give us money to buy cards", you'd think they'd lean into making people want more than one.

  • MNC DoverMNC Dover Full-time Voice Actor Kirkland, WARegistered User regular
Yeah, the UI needs a massive overhaul. Deckbuilding and collection sorting is unintuitive. Making a deck is painful.

Something simple would be to copy the Hearthstone UI. Swipe left and right to go through your collection (say 4-6 cards per page) with tabs at the top to jump to types (grass, fire, etc).

They have the symbol for owning a card, but not for owning two copies. They could literally have the symbol double up to show x2 copies. Or use checkmarks, anything honestly. Also, why the fuck to I have to go to the pack opening menu to craft a card? That should be in the collection. Again, Hearthstone did this shit from the get-go over 12 years ago.

I like the game, but it really needs a lot of work going forward.

After grabbing the shiny Rayquaza I figured I'd give Tera Raids a shot again since I saw I could pick up DLC Pokemon that way. I forgot what a miserable experience the whole thing is. The whole interface is terrible with no way to search or block Pokemon I don't want to fight. 3/4 of the time I can't connect to a fight. When I do there will often be inexplicable 30 second bursts of dead time where nothing is happening, but the timer continues counting down, which is unforgivable on a time-limited system. And good luck if you want to try and time your healing cheer to affect anyone but your own Pokemon, because there's a good chance whatever your teammates health is, that's not actually what it will be once you finally use the cheer.

And of course, because this is a game for kids, every fight has the risk of one of your teammates deciding to bring his Regirock to a 6-Star Water Tera Lapras fight.

It's honestly no wonder I had an easier time catching Rayquaza when I was alone with 3 AI partners.

The UI is generally a trash fire in places. Like if you search your collection, it gives you buttons for your previous search history in case you want to repeat a search. V logical. But each one is labelled with a time and date and nothing else. Utterly baffling.

So I just got like 120 of the pack opening hourglasses, I'm wondering if I should just open up 10 packs or hold on to them. I assume the odds are the same no matter how many packs you open at once.

They're adding trading sometime soon. Nobody knows what exactly that will entail (but it will certainly be limited in some way), but I'm saving my duplicate EXs to potentially trade.

Got my first immersive art card, the Celebi. Got to admit, it's pretty darn cool. But apparently they're not even the rarest kind you can get? Do the crown rare or whatever you call them cards do anything like the immersive art ones? If not, I'd much rather have the immersive one.

Yeah the flair is a trap imo since they've already shown that trading will happen. I'm hoarding all my cards for that.

I'm trying to grind out the event during the holidays, and having really good outcomes with a blastoise/druddigon deck. Essentially, you only have the blastoise line and 2 druddigons, a leaf, 2 mistys, 2 gios, a sabrina, 2 xspeeds, and normal card draw.

You stall with the druddigons which whittles down health or forces potion use, while digging for blastoise. You can often finish off the main attacker with 3 energy on blastoise, but the mistys will hopefully allow you to ramp into 160 damage. With 100 health on the druddigon, nothing can one shot them in the early game, and with 180 health in blastoise, you can normally withstand a full blast of something and still punish/finish.

If you can't get blastoise out, it's bad times/conceding though, there's nothing you can do because druddigon can't attack. But i'm winning way more than losing against current decks like celebi, wheezing, mewtwo etc.

One thing I just had happen is facing a non-ex aerodactyl that won because I had no other pokemon out but blastoise, and their move shuffles the active pokemon into the deck, leaving me with none. I'm kind of feeling both ways about that. On one hand, it's funny and probably rare to happen where it wins the game. On the other, aerodactyl is a 2 step evolution and it feels kind of OP to be able to do something like that on your third turn.

I love Charizard, and fire pokemon generally, so when they said there would be Charizard cosmetics in the subscription rewards I was worried they'd make me spend money on them. Well, now the cosmetics are out, and my money is safe; goddamn they made Charizard look terrible. Why did they think I'd want to see Charizard's back while it pelvic thrusts at nothing? That's a big miss for me.

I read that January is meant to bring trading and a new set of booster packs, do we know when in January that will be?

I've never really ever gotten the appeal of Charizard. On various levels of my understanding of the games, it's weak to my first starting Pokemon Blastoise, it's a "dragon" that isn't even Dragon type, it's actually pretty short, and it gets absolutely murdered by Stealth Rock.

It's a cute little orange-red lizard that turns into a cool big orange-red lizard with wings and claws. It's on fire and if it's ever not on fire it dies. Charmeleon unfortunately looks like a doofus, so I don't let charmander evolve until level 35.
And whatever the game mechanics tell you, getting blasted by a flamethrower would do way more damage than a spray of water or a few leaves. Charizard isn't weak to water, fire boils water away. Oh no, pidgey moved a little air around? Charmander burns it out of the sky, feathers are flammable. Stealth rock? Who drops some pebbles on the ground when they can burn everything down? When I take a solo charmander into misty's gym the game lies and pretends I'm not doing well, but I know I've burnt the whole gym down and picked a badge out of the ashes.
