The main challenge with the level 1 Porta Ladonna is not accidentally leveling up. Probably easier on the grass stage, but once they start coming from all sides that's a lot of xp orbs creating a minefield.

More than once, the thought of how much time this would waste on my phone has shocked me. Just.. give me the ability to direct where I go by tilting my phone, and I'm done.
Edit: ahh, reading the news notes, the mobile engine just couldn't keep up. that makes sense.
I didn't get much use out of the upgraded santa flask until the last 2 minutes, when nothing but huge hp bosses stand around you and just burn to death in the holy acid. My previous game to this on the Mad Forest I hit 9.7M over the run. It's worthless against any kind of mobile foe, but when you need to turtle up it is incredible.
Holy Water, Book, Axe, Wand, Cross, Whip meant I could stand still while healing and picking up XP. I spent the last 5 minutes doing nothing. The final bat waves were right on top of me, but I was almost always at full health thanks to the whip.
Surprised getting 6 evolved weapons isn't an achievement. Imagine it will be eventually.

What's the second free item (I know the stone mask is to the right) on the library? I like getting free items.
My commentary - the interesting thing about this is how much depth there is despite the super simple pigeonholed upgrade paths that could have otherwise been terrible. You need to have some AOE to survive late, but you benefit a lot from the single target stuff too, so if you don't balance things...
I have found myself gravitating toward my favorites over and over, so I'm trying to do weird stuff (like not take garlic).
My only complaint: man it sucks when I get forced to fill my last weapon slot and don't have double bird yet - single bird is a total waste.
Got hosed by items I didn't want again, but it let me try bird as my only real aoe (axes sort of), and I saw the biggest single skill dps I've seen yet.

I made the mistake of finally opening this game tonight. God damn why did I do that.
Like my 4th run I managed to make it to 30 mins, not only that but the combo of shield and freeze let me survive to 4 deaths? It was library and I actually got 2 of them stuck on that paino area.
Just had one run where I had lightning with maxed Cooldown reduction, area, and damage with evolved wand and fireball. I actually died like 15 seconds before it was over somehow but still was nuts. I am guessing some stuff unlocks later that results in some of the numbers these posts are getting.
My first win was in the library with uh... 2nd row lightning chick. I don't have the game in front of me for names.
I'm a pretty firm believer that the lightning spell is nearly essential to any successful run. I won't say always, but I will say nearly. Especially once you have it leveled up. It just passively murders stuff around the periphery. Stuff you never have to worry about because it never makes it to you.
My other "best runs" have been with dagger guy on the top row. The guy who always gets +1 extra projectile for every skill. He's really good.
I've had some decent runs with Not_Alucard, but I've never won with him. The fire spell seems to peak pretty fast in power. It's very strong in the early game, but by the 10 minute mark it doesn't feel like it does much anymore. It should be noted that I've never gotten the upgrade for it. So maybe fireball gets good again when you get the 2nd tier version of it, but I haven't had that yet.

Basically.
Lightning Ring, Hellfire (after upgrade from fire wand), and Runetracer all serve the same role. The "attack the edges" weapons. Death Spiral too, but much like hellfire it's only after upgrade that it gets the capability to affect the entire screen.
So of the four, it's Lightning Ring and Runetracer that are easy to pick up and reach all the way to the edges.
I'm starting to see a successful build as including at least 2 of these kinds of screen affecting weapons; at least 1 zoning weapon (birds, santa water, book); at least 1 close in dps (garlic or holy wand); and at least one survivability/knockback weapon (garlic+holywand or Laural.)
Does the bird actually do anything? I took it once and never saw anything die. I saw the red rings on the ground, but it felt like nothing was happening. I've never taken it again since then.
I feel like the King's Bible is the best evolved weapon, but I could be wrong.
I honestly prefer Santa Water over Bible before/after evolving. But both are very good. I also find myself going for duration+ and area+ a lot, so that changes my calculus.
Most of the evolved weapons are pretty good. Except Whip. I don't like Whip after evolving. (I don't care for it very strongly even before evolving, but it's nice when it gets lots of projectiles.)

The bird is very good after a couple levels yes. It's first level is pretty lackluster. Also, there's another unlock behind getting the bird to level 5. And an evolution further behind.
It's lackluster at the start because it doesn't throw out enough projectiles to fully cover the red ring as it rotates around, so it misses at times. Bird very much wants extra projectiles from either weapon levelups, character select, duplicator ring, or PowerUps (all of them!) Let's be serious, extra projectiles are the biggest single power increasing stat in the game.

And area! Make all those sprites as big as possible.
I think the crown might make sense if you are trying to maximize gold per run. Crown pays for itself after 12 levels, no matter how many levels of crown you take. Tops out at a 40% buff now, I think - 8% per item level. Cap out inventory quicker, start collecting gold bags from leveling earlier...
Just so I understand, Death showing up and killing you instantly is the game's "win" state, right? I imagine that happened because I spent long enough on the "everything is bosses" state.

Yeah, it happens at 30 minutes in which is the win condition essentially.
So, the skeleton character is amazing, when you survive long enough to level up. Like, I already love the guy with an inherent +1 to projectiles. But the skeleton can just keep getting more projectiles as he levels up, to a max of +3. And then if you find the Duplicator as well...

White bird is not great, the item it unlocks once you get it to level 5 is also...not great. Super Bird is godly though.
I basically try to take Super Bird, Super Books, now Super Water and then whatever fills in around it. Sometimes Super Fireball because of the damage bonus needed for its evolution, sometimes Super Axes because I really like my AoE. I think Super Wand is pretty good too, probably my preferred single target weapon. I'll always take the Ring Doubler though so that limits the number of weapons I can evolve.
I used to take Laurel for the shield, but it really becomes irrelevant once you get Super Books (and usually even before then), add Super Water and there's really no point. I havent tried running with a melee person for a while though, didnt care for whip guy and I really dont like knives so I havent really given Knife Guy a chance, even though he gets you an extra throwable.
I should probably unlock other characters, I basically only use Mage Lady and Runetracer Guy....
but it definitely wants a lot of investment. Usually insto stuff like extra projectiles, bigger AOE, and shorter recharge time. But then, those are good for almost every weapon, so

Yeah, Bird(s) can be good. But they're never gonna be the standout linchpin of a build.
Upgraded fire wand seems like kind of a no-brainer, right? The support item is awesome, and if you look at the victory screens posted here Hellfire is pulling top or 2nd highest DPS when it's around. It was destroying most of my other upgraded items in DPS on my successful library run too.
the two birds seems like another no-brainer, frees up a support slot, gives you essentially 2.5 items in one primary slot once you fully upgrade it, and does top damage on my successful runs too. The only downside is it is a pretty supporty weapon that you can't really aim at a certain target, has no knockback, and takes 2 primary slots until you can get to rank 8 on both birds so it's a big level investment to get the second slot back.
Yeah the only slight concern I see with that one is making the game a bit rougher in the beginning. Depending on your rolls it can be hard to kill as much as you need with both of those taking up slots early game since they don't really shine until later on, and really with Super Birb, but it's definitely amazing once fully evolved. If you're making it through the early phases without difficulty it's definitely a great investment!

It's only 40 or so levels more than normal, so like 2kish (25 x 40 x 2) extra gold. Better to focus on kills. I've done 10k+ on Exarch.

You'll get there before you know it. Soon, 30 minute runs will be commonplace and you'll be asking for higher difficulty.
This is just hilarious:
I'm guessing a chair is getting moved in a future patch.

I've tried a few times and it is really hard to set this up correctly.
Just goes to show that you can get a ton of levels without needing XP gear. You're better off just getting kills.
First up, was me seeing just what can be done with the birds...
Hint: It kills my framerate insanely.
Then, I decide to see what the third area is like...

First map also has items on the ground now (a chance at them at least)
they are roughly....
North =Hollow Heart
South = Pummarola
West = Clover
East = Spinach
they have a chance to spawn in specific places but can be a pain to navigate to accurately.

Sitting in the first run, after a while I thought I was doing pretty good. Looked up and it had only been 8 minutes. Didn't make it past 11....
Edit: Couple more attempts and man this game takes you from confident to dead real quick.
