I'm glad people are getting a chance to play Live a Live. It's one of the coolest jrpgs that never made it to the west.

Gotta say, I am annoyed they didn't even bother to translate the one actual line in Prehistory. And it's an important one.

There's some hoopla going on over a line in the China chapter. When you meet Lei, in the japanese script the shifu says something like "You're letting your pretty face go to waste" and it's completely changed in english. Now that specific example... I really couldn't give a shit, that's fine. Got to the end of Prehistory though, and yeah that's a humdinger.
"Aiiii". Which maybe sounds like Pogo just yelling out. But "Ai" is also the japanese word for "love" which is what he's actually saying.

Like is that a case of getting it wrong? And now I'm curious as to what other stuff got changed or incorrectly translated. Hell, there's a real confusing one in the Near Future chapter to boot.
You can get an item that in japanese is called "Taeko's panties". ...Yeah. And in typical fashion, you can wear it on your body or your head, because again... yeah. Well the localization decides that's not acceptable, and so calls it... "Taeko's secret stash". With the text reading it's literally just a stash of money. It's still classified as body and head armor. Just... what? I'm wearing a pile of money as body armor... or a helmet? Ok, you wanna scrub the panties joke because you think it's gross. I ain't pitching a fit over that. But... that is what you come up with? You couldn't think of anything better?

So all that, and finding out they changed the tequila in the Wild West to a generic ointment. There's been enough localization oddities that have come up that now I can't help cock an eyebrow and wonder what else got changed, be it major or minor.

honestly it sounds like the kind of changes they would have made if they were actually localizing it for an American SNES release back in the day, and I kind of love that?

I'd rather not feel nostalgic for restrictive, regressive practices, or be reminded at how little progress has been made on that front.

They also don't have a problem with light to moderate swearing, so I doubt this is intentional or something. This might be my age talking, but it's kind of surprising how much the word "shit" has fallen and how freely you can use it now.

Yeah, I remember when you would only see swear words in romhacks and fan translations, and it felt like a mark of poor quality, like "only amateurs would be so classless."

I should make it clear that I'm not against it or anything, just commenting on the fact that it used to be bleeped everywhere, and in fact it's extra funny now when a show bleeps "asshole" and not "shit".

If anything, I kind of like mild swearing, at least when it's appropriate. At least for me it's a quick sign that the text isn't going to shackle itself if and when shit starts hitting the fan. There's nothing dumber then a dramatic moment ruined when a character loudly screams out "DARN IIIITTT!!!". Like you said, I remember the old days of restrictive practices. I think my favourite one that comes to mind is Xenosaga II erasing every last drop of blood. Not just the speck of blood on the corner of the mouth, but also whole scene of somebody severely bleeding out and the traumatized little girl trying to "push the blood back in".

But also like you said, nobody likes an edgelord translation that uses shit/ass/fuck every 3rd word.

Like nature of the content aside, IMO the recontextualization made it even worse.
I get wanting to change it because panty stealing/wearing on your head is not really a trope in western media as it is in JP - I think just in a vacuum it's a joke that would have fallen flat for some people whether or not you care about the implication.

But "Taeko's secret stash" is now literally her savings. The description text even says Taeko has been saving money little by little and you hope that she's not keeping up at night wondering what happened to it. Like what the fuck? You changed the context to imply Akira recruited a child to steal their teacher/foster mom's life savings. That's way worse imo.

Not even bringing up the idea of how that's something you'd equip as an armor piece, or how the Doc can transmute items into more of her "secret stash". (although that part could be kind of funny in a "just roll with it" kind of way)

Started Live-A-Live's Prehistory chapter tonight. Was pretty underpowered at the first boss, had to spam Gori's ranged attacks from outside his counterattack range for a good while. Gonna grind up in the desert for a while.

    Can you explain this?

    He invents the first word.
    Love

Loses it's impact to the English audience when untranslated if they don't know what the Japanese word for it is.
Lots of comments on the internet have just assumed he's screaming.

You're already predisposed to not liking it to the point of insulting it, so... I don't know? Like, probably not in a way that you'll be satisfied by. At the end of the day it's a deliberately faithful remake of a SNES game that didn't really get much of a budget at its time so you're going to get that peculiar kind of core experience one way or another. Its main claim to fame is that it was narratively ambitious and the story ties together in a pretty unique way that Square has never really repeated since, but the way that story is delivered isn't going to change for a while outside of the theming of each chapter.

It's not unheard of for a game to have a slow, boring, meandering opening, but eventually turn into something actually entertaining a few hours in. The first few hours of Persona 4 are just a visual novel with no meaningful interaction from the player. But I was told it got better later, so I stuck it out, and had a lot of fun with it, and bought Persona 5 day one because of it.

Also, I don't think certain anachronisms should get a pass just because it's a remake. It's being released in 2022 for nearly full price.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I originally watched it on a bootleg VHS I had borrowed from a friend's grandpa who had recorded it from HBO, so I knew what all the bad words were supposed to be. But I could never resist watching it anytime it came on network TV, so the edits are burned into my memory as well.

I never said it was a pass or that it should get a pass, I said it as matter-of-fact. If that's not what you like, it's not going to get better just because the story improves later. And certainly not better in a way Persona 4 is going to get, lol.

In the Snes version if you give Bel an equip item while she's hiding in the hay stack she'll hop out of the haystack and flash you.

In the Switch version if you give Bel an equip item. She'll briefly hop out of the haystack make some gestures and actually pull Pogo into the haystack with her.

    Interesting change.
