It was requested we corner off the MCU and Marvel talk from places like the movie thread, so, here ya go! A place for folks to talk, speculate, argue, and be generally the worst regarding all things Marvel (up to and including the MCU).

What is our stance on spoilers based off of trailers, commercials, advertising, and all other elements of marketing?
DJ Eebs wrote: »
Official spoiler policy from me is that you don't have to spoiler tag things from trailers. I'm sorry if you're avoiding them, but it's not a reasonable ask for people not to discuss advertisements.
Zonugal wrote: »
I'm fine changing this thread's spoiler policy to reflect the following:
-- Films currently in theaters or not yet released on DVD or a streaming platform are spoilered
-- Films on DVD or streaming platforms are completely open
-- Episodes of new MCU TV properties are spoiled for the first week after their release
-- Speculation from marketing of MCU properties is completely open

And speaking of trailers, we just had a few new ones drop:

DR. STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS

MOON KNIGHT
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM3Yx-5Ymiw

There is more coming as well!!

Talk, debate, scream together but do it in here.

    Last Year:

"The Loki TV show is obviously going to heavily tie into Multiverse of Madness. The What If show is just a fun little side thing."

*Multiverse trailer comes out and seemingly ties into What If rather heavily*

    My theories
Everything in Loki points to there being a larger than Kang threat, and with tentacle fella in the Strange trailer I think we're gonna get Peggy Carter since in her What If... she disappears into a void fighting a tentacle fella.

Also the major threat is going to be Galactus. They keep ramping up the literal size of their final bosses this decade so I think that's where we're gonna land.

"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor

With the serial numbers filed off, because apparently the name was from a Conan book way back when.
Doesn't make sense to me, I can't imagine the Conan IP is bringing in enough that Disney couldn't back up a truck full of money to the estate and get the name.

But then, I'm not a multi-billion dollar player in the entertainment industry. Maybe it makes more sense from that point of view.

I think it'd be easy enough to "effectively" have Shuma-Gortah, just change the name.

I doubt the Conan estate owns the concept of comic tentacle monster.

Wikipedia says it first appeared in a Marvel book (Marvel Premier #10) so maybe not a Conan character?

EDIT: Name is taken from Kull the Conqueror story, but it sounds like the character itself is unique to Marvel, so unless that name is trademarked, there shouldn't be any trouble with Marvel using it I guess.

I don't know, I'm going off a ScreenRant article I found with 30 seconds of googling.
It says that the Howard estate owns the name and created it in 1967 for The Curse of the Golden Skull .
And Marvel Premier #10 was in 73. Not that the name of the CGI blob monster is going to prevent me from seeing or enjoying the movie.
TBH, the only things I know about it are from the Marvel Vs Capcom game, where I played him because he was a weird little tentacle monster (I was terrible though).

That seems to be what they're doing. Just wish they'd found a better sounding name than "Gargantos".
Sounds like something out of Venture Bros.

Character copyright is different from trademarks. Look at Captain Marvel. First owned by Fawcett who went out of business, so Marvel came in and trademarked the name, so when DC bought the rights to the character, they could still call him "Captain Marvel" but couldn't call the book that because Marvel had trademarked the name, so the book was Shazam. They eventually just started calling the character Shazam too, but that was more a brand recognition thing than a legal one.

Nobody has a trademark on Shuma-Gorath, as far as I can tell, so all Marvel should need to demonstrate is that the character is unique from the one from Krull, and I'm not sure if the Krull one existed beyond the name.

Marvel's Shuma-Gorath has a specific visual design and character history.

Like, we're literally recognizing them in this film because of that design.

Right but that doesn't mean that the figure doesn't exist

Like, that's the most reference that half of Lovecraft's shit gets, and there is a whole cottage industry of trying to turn those into more than that now

Marvel did a bunch of that for Howard's work through their history of making licensed work, but that doesn't make the original work any less Howard's

So is the Dr. Strange "oh no I opened too many mystic doors and discovered infinite multiverses and maybe that's bad?!" thing, is that from the latest Spider Man movie? Do I need to have seen it for context? Because I'm way into what they're doing in this new movie but I didn't watch the Wanda TV show and I haven't seen the latest Spiderman and it seems like maybe both of those things are important.

I have to imagine the film will open up in a friendly enough manner.

The latest Spider-Man basically included the end of Far From Home, as to help ease audiences into its newly central conflict.

But the Wanda stuff? Eeeeeh... They'll probably offer a few lines if dialogue to clue folks in but... I'm not hopeful on how they summarize that whole affair.

The movie will include the basic context, but if you want the full explanation of what happened and why, you'll need to watch those, yes. Spider-Man was an extremely fun watch and I thought Wandavision was interesting and well done also, so it shouldn't be a bear to get through.

Speaking of catching up, after about a year + of basically not watching any TV at all, I've been watching an episode of something per day and with this method have finished all the MCU stuff save What If, which I started yesterday. My fave so far was Hawkeye, and my least favorite (I didn't hate it) was Loki.

I think they're playing fast and loose with the TV show narratives as i'm sure they know most people aren't that invested. As for Spidy, I mean it's a great movie you should consider watching but mainly Strange cast a wish spell and Spidy fucked it up and now there's a bunch of holes in our dimension, so not a ton you need to know.
