i'm an hour and a half into FFX.....

    I shouldn't have been a Tidus apologist.

Tidus has a lot of character growth and he becomes fine, but he starts out as a crybaby.

Did I see in the news that some new Star Wars thing mentions the underwater sport they play called Blitzball? Because that breaks my brain

And the person who wrote it into canon specified that he did in fact mean the exact Blitzball from FFX. Like there is no debate about this.

We knew most Final Fantasys were set in the Star Wars universe anyway. Where Biggs and Wedge must be incredibly common names.

As for the originals, finding out those are actually their given names and not, like, nicknames or pilot callsigns was the first of many "Wtf, George" moments for me :P

It's not just Biggs, it's Biggs Darklighter. It's just as extra as Skywalker. But Wedge Antilles sounds fine to me.

And FF names get pretty out there too, it's a great fit.

Ugh I can't figure out how to get Relm back. I think I may have done it out of order by accident? I found her in a cave and it said that she needs to rest. But when I look up a guide I'm supposed to go to the Mansion in Jidoor and there's some steps in there that I can enter... but they aren't there. There's nothing there.

Did you neglect to wait on the Floating Continent?!

Anyway, if you fought the boss in the Cave on the Veldt, you should be able to explore the mansion in Jidoor. Take a closer look at some of those paintings.

Edit: oh, Google says you need to visit Thamasa a couple times to make her leave her sick bed there

Yeah I looked at the girl in the bottom left and even looked at the emperor twice. Don't even remember what I got from that lol...

Eh, they're both from the same backwater planet. Having "Nounverber" surnames be a cultural thing isn't that weird, imho.

It's not that Wedge and Biggs are silly names, it's that they sound like the kind of nicknames you get for doing something dumb in training

I’m pretty sure there’s no way to cut yourself off from that quest - You may have to talk to somebody in Thamasa who’ll tell you that she went to Jidoor to trip a quest flag, but that’s just a guess.

You might have to visit the magi tower and see Strago first before Relm's quest continues.

Just... if it's Relm you've found in the veldt cave...
You've killed Shadow and you're not getting him back.

Oh man yeah if you didn't wait for Shadow then he's gone forever. When the game tells you to wait for him, it literally means wait for him - he shows up in the last 5 seconds of the timer while escaping the Floating Continent. You would have seen him in the Veldt cave unconscious instead of Relm - which also incidentally makes Relm slightly less cryptic to recruit.

I don't remember what that looks like from behind but I choose to interpret it as more-or-less a single conjoined pant leg from the knees down, which you have to keep from falling by maintaining tension on the cloth, making it almost impossible to walk at no benefit to the wearer.

I also tend to not put much stock in people complaining that characters react poorly to their first total disaster and subsequent “pulled from their reality to a time and place they have no concept of.” Like you get some latitude to react.

FFX also has the story part where Tidus is an outsider who doesn't actually know what Yuna's quest actually means and entails and the rest of the Guardians purposely keep him in the dark about it.

Tidus' status as an outsider who can't read the room is, in fact, vital to the plot progressing in an ultimately positive direction.

I think Tidus doesn't feel as annoying on your first time through the game because you the player are just as clueless as he is. Once you know what's going on, you're more dialled into the perspective of everyone else who's just bemused that this guy managed to reach this age while not knowing the basic stuff and when to shut the hell up.

TBF they just think he has temporary amnesia.

They end up moving on from the amnesia theory when he shows himself knowing stuff he shouldn't, like the legendary badass Guardian. I think they just accept that he's come from some other place by the time the big attack on Sin goes pear-shaped.
After that they just don't want to tell him the important thing that'd stop him from putting his foot in his mouth so often, which he is pissed about when he finds out.

There's a point where Lulu starts explaining something unprompted, and Tidus calls her out and suggests she's starting to finally believe him.

For me, I don't really care if "character transported to a strange land and learning about it" is vital to the plot, it's just not a plot I enjoyed by the time I first played FFX, and it's only gotten worse.

I've never not been annoyed by plots where a dude runs up to someone and is like "what year is it?!" and they're like "well that's a funny question mister, you hit your head or somethin'? Why it's the year 1936!" and then the guy holds his head and swoons and goes "ohhhh nooooooooo"

The tropes are just so obvious, the requisite amount of time spent not understanding, and in denial, and then somehow trying to use your outsider status to your advantage like winning bets, and then you teach the knights how to build and ride bicycles, and get accused of witchcraft, and it's all just so zany.

FFX is a little better for not being rooted in anything we already recognize, but then it's just got the pitfalls of a conveniently clueless character so everyone else can spout exposition at them at every turn.

If I never hear "did you hit your head or somethin'" again it'll still be too soon. I've been playing the Outer Worlds and it's happening there too.
