Harvey Marcelin, an 83-year-old who spent decades in prison for two prior convictions in the deaths of other women, was indicted last week in the death of 68-year-old Susan Leyden...

According to prison records cited by the New York Post, Marcelin has twice been convicted of killings before. Marcelin spent more than 50 years in state prison on murder and manslaughter convictions dating back to 1963. Marcelin’s previous convictions were for killing live-in girlfriends, according to court documents.

A jury found Marcelin guilty of murder in 1963 for shooting and killing Jacqueline Bonds inside a Manhattan apartment. At the time, Marcelin was also facing an attempted rape charge involving another woman, according to court records.

The judge gave Marcelin life in prison after jurors were unable to agree on whether the crime justified the death penalty.

Marcelin was released on lifetime parole in May 1984, the Post reported, and cuffed again for allegedly stabbing another girlfriend less than a year later and leaving her body in a trash bag in the street near Central Park. Marcelin was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six to 12 years in prison.

State officials were reluctant to grant parole when Marcelin became eligible in the 1990s. During one State Parole Board hearing in 1997, Marcelin admitted to having “problems” with women, according to court records. Other boards rejected parole citing Marcelin’s “attempt to place the blame” on the victims.

Marcelin was released from prison in late 2019 on parole.

there is some shit missing in this tale about the 2019 parole hearing and what factors they considered here

I mean, I guess in general, 83 year old women are unlikely to commit brutally violent acts of murder

Yeah, the news is sensationalist, especially about crime

and it's not like they report on all the people who are let out early and then DON'T go on to chop up a woman

but there is part of my heart that sees this case and is like, maybe two strikes and you're out when the strike is killing your girlfriend?

idk, two seems like a very concerning pattern, in terms of girlfriend-killing

The NBC news article uses female pronouns for her while also referring to her as "Harvey"; other sources mostly do the same, although I did manage to find one result that mentioned her switching to using Marcelin as a first name.

My guess is that she never officially changed it, and the court records which the reporters are pulling from all use her government name?

At least, the fact that NBC does not otherwise mention she is trans makes me suspect that using "Harvey" isn't a deliberate choice to try to negatively highlight her gender identity

but idk how the news desk works

I have a C++ question and...whatever, maybe one of you can answer. I am failing at googling today.

So a "friend" function // class // whatever can be used to give a functiom access to a class's internals. BS's 4e manual claims this could be useful to give access to e.g. a vector / matrix multiply function, since most other functions dont need access and breaking encapsulation is bad, but the perf gains or whatever here justify it.

But you can only declare friends in class declarations, so I cant say "oh wow I have a Vector and a Multiply by a 3rd party that I cant touch, I wanna add VecMatrixMultiply after the fact", I have to reimplement both classes wholesale?

It seems very much like a way to write a library you wholly control in a nice, predictable way, but less useful (well, unusable at all without just hacking up the class you want opened) for an application trying to add a layer of functionality on top of someone else's code by popping open the hood of a few useful classes. Maybe I'm describing goblin-like engineering activities that only appear reasonable because the example is trivial.

    @Donkey Kong I guess

they refer to them as a transgender woman at 0:59 in the linked NBC video

Chu's comment confused me because i thought they were correctly gendering them?

But yeah in any case it seems like nobody is trying to misgender them, there's enough to go off of just with their carrying around a leg on a Hoverround
